REINVENTING THE AMERICAN SUPERHERO: THE CHARISMATIC LEADERSHIP AND CULTURAL LEGACY OF STAN LEE Hazel Homer-Wambeam Junior Individual Documentary Process Paper: 499 Words !1 “A different house of worship A different color skin A piece of land that’s coveted And the drums of war begin.” -Stan Lee, 1970 THESIS As the comic book industry was collapsing during the 1950s and 60s, Stan Lee utilized his charismatic leadership style to reinvent and revive the superhero phenomenon. By leading the industry into the “Marvel Age,” Lee has left a multilayered legacy. Examples of this include raising awareness of social issues, shaping contemporary pop-culture, teaching literacy, giving people hope and self-confidence in the face of adversity, and leaving behind a multibillion dollar industry that employs thousands of people. TOPIC I was inspired to learn about Stan Lee after watching my first Marvel movie last spring. I was never interested in superheroes before this project, but now I have become an expert on the history of Marvel and have a new found love for the genre. Stan Lee’s entire personal collection is archived at the University of Wyoming American Heritage Center in my hometown. It contains 196 boxes of interviews, correspondence, original manuscripts, photos and comics from the 1920s to today. This was an amazing opportunity to obtain primary resources. !2 RESEARCH My most important primary resource was the phone interview I conducted with Stan Lee himself, now 92 years old. It was a rare opportunity that few people have had, and quite an honor! I use clips of Lee’s answers in my documentary.

The purpose of this research is to adapt the approaches used by prominent and influential writers and artists in the American superhero/action comic-book field to create an engaging Australian hero comic book. Further, the aim of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the lack of academic writing on the professional practice of the Australian comic industry. In order to achieve this, I explored and learned the methods these prominent and professional US writers and artists use. Compared to the American industry, the creating of comic books in Australia has rarely been documented, particularly in a formal capacity or from a contemporary perspective. The process I used was to navigate through the research and studio practice from the perspective of a solo artist with an interest to learn, and to develop into an artist with a firmer understanding of not only the medium being engaged, but the context in which the medium is being created.

Balestrieri NEW YORK CITY — Disclosure: I still have my comic book collection, books from the early 1970s for the most part, from what is referred to as the Silver Age of Comics, silver calling to mind the silver bullets that plagued the Werewolf By Night, calling to mind the Silver Surfer, that most cerebral and cosmic of the superheroes, calling to mind the Fantastic Four and the silver temples of their leader, Reed Richards (mine are silver, too, though my ability to stretch, as opposed to his, seems to be on the wane). My children marvel at my Marvel Comics and Classics Illustrated — now bagged and boarded in acid-free Mylar. Batman (No.1, Spring 1940), Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Published by Detective Comics, Inc, New York. Serial and Government Publications Division, Library of Congress, Washington D.C. Full disclosure: you may well see, somewhere in this essay, a photo of attendees at the 2012 Comic Con in New York. I was there, with my family, and was in a kind of makeshift getup as the Shadow, that 1930s pulp hero — “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men…” — who was the inspiration for Batman. Others soon followed, including a hero created by Will Eisner called The Spirit. By the 1950s stories about superheroes dominated the comic book field. After finding its home in the El Cortez Hotel in downtown San Diego, the event continued to grow and prosper and build a national following. Political cartoons could be considered the first comics. They were used to make fun of political figures such as King George of England or President Abraham Lincoln. The cartoons also questioned authority. Artists drew these authority figures with weird bodies or exaggerated heads to make fun of them. King George was often drawn with a big behind. Imagine the popularity of that cartoon! Sometimes political cartoons were used to draw attention to injustices or to highlight current events. This style of comic still exists in newspaper editorial pages and magazines. Color Is King The Sunday comic pages began printing in color in the late 1800s. This was a big deal because the rest of thehe newspaper was black andd white.
