Then answer the questions. A Short History of the Comic Book i. The history of the comic book really begins in the early part of the 20th century. At that time, full color newspaper comics were very popular in the United States. By the 1920s, businessmen and artists such as Will Eisner began to re-print newspaper comics in the form of small magazines, or comic books. Later on, comic book publishers began hiring artists to create original art and stories for their comic books. ii. In 1938, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created Superman, the world's first superhero. Others soon followed, including a hero created by Will Eisner called The Spirit. By the 1950s stories about superheroes dominated the comic book field. This dominance became much greater in the early 1960s when Marvel Comics, led by Stan Lee, created such famous superheroes as Spider-Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Daredevil. iii. In the late 1970s and early 1980s the next major development in the history of comic books took place: the graphic novel. Unlike the typical 20-page stories found in older comics, graphic novels, such as Alan Moore's Watchmen, and Frank Miller's The Dark Knight, were boo k length stories in comic form created for adults. iv. Comic books and graphic novels have continued to grow in popularity, and have expanded to other art forms. Movies based on comic book characters, such as Spider-Man (2002) and The Dark Knight (2008) rank in the top 10 movies of all time in terms of ticket sales.
