Minister Papalia's party were given support in Japan by Mr Craig Peacock, Commissioner of Western Australia Office and Mr Hideki Yoshizawa, Country Manager, Japan Tourism Western Australia.

Purpose of Visit - The purpose of the visit to Japan was for Minister Papalia to meet with senior officials of Japanese ( and ) to develop relationships at a senior level and discuss the opportunity for direct flights between Perth and Tokyo.

The visit also provided an opportunity for a meeting with the Australian Ambassador to Japan to discuss tourism, aviation development and defence issues.

Dinner with Japan Airlines (JAL) - Mr Kiyoto Morioka, Vice President Business Development Route Marketing and other Executive Team Members.

The dinner the evening before the formal meeting with JAL allowed the Minister and his team to better develop relationships and outline the friendship of Western Australia (WA) with the .

Friday, 27 October 2017 Meeting with Japan Airlines - JAL Executives and Mr Joe Yoshiyuki Nakazawa, Country Manager Japan, Tourism Australia AUendees Japanese Airlines: Mr Tadashi Fujita, Representative (Board) Director, Executive Vice President; Mr Akkira Yonezawa, Executive Officer International Route Marketing; Mr Kiyoto Morioka, Vice President Business Development Route Marketing; Mr Kenichiro Naito, Vice President Network Planning; and Mr Minato Nishimura, Manager Network Planning.

Travel Report Submitted to Parliament - Page 1 of 2 Minister Pap alia was able to identify the Government's commitment to Japan as a priority market and its desire to re-establish direct flights between Perth and Tokyo and position Perth as JAL's next Australian destination in its international network. During the meeting the Minister outlined the strengths of Perth and the Japan-WA relationship (business, tourism, education) and signalled the desire for the WA Government to undertake formal negotiations with JAL.

Working Lunch with Mr Joe Nakazawa, Country Manager, Tourism Australia

The Minister and his party discussed the WA Government's plans for re-establishing direct flights between Perth and Tokyo and their commitment to the Japanese market.

Meeting with All Nippon Airways (ANA) - ANA Executivesm Mr Craig Peacock, WA Commissioner to Japan and Mr Joe Yoshiyuki Nakazawa, Country Manager Japan, Tourism Australia Attendees All Nippon Airways: Mr Kenya Inada, Executive Vice President, Marketing; Seiichi Takahashi, Vice President, Network Planning, Marketing; Mr Atsushi Asano, Senior Director, Alliances and International Affairs; Mr Naohiro Terakawa, Senior Director, Network Planning; and Mr Hiroyuki Hayashi, Manager, Network Planning. The Minister discussed the WA Government's commitment to Japan as a priority market and its desire to re-establish direct flights between Perth and Tokyo. Discussions also enabled the development and building of relationships in the lead in to ANA's decision making process for considering Perth as ANA's next Australian destination when the company seeks to expand in the next eighteen months or so.

Meeting with Regional Manager, Japan - Mr Masashi Ogino

Minister Papalia was able to discuss Qantas' Australia - Japan plans in context of Qantas' Asia growth plans and get information on trends they saw in the travel market.

Meeting with Japanese Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs - Mr Iwao Horii

Mr Horii and Minister Papalia spoke of the need for more flights between Japan and Perth as it would benefit both countries with increased visitor numbers from Japan to Western Australia and Australian visitors to Japan. Vice Minister Horii is a strong advocate for more flights between Japan and Western Australia. His Excellency Mr Richard Court AC

During the dinner Minister Papalia was able to discuss WA related matters concerning tourism, airline development and defence.
