John Wustman, pianist Nathan Gunn, baritone Marie Hamman, tenor Julianne Oms, soprano Mary Ann Kyle, soprano Katharine DeBoer, soprano THE COMPLETE SONGS OF FRANZ SCHUBERT Pranz Jc!iubert This unique and historic series of Schubert song recitals has been designed by John Wustman as his personal observance of the approaching Schubert Bicentenial. Franz (Peter) Schubert was born in the suburbs of Vienna on the last day of 1797-1828 January 194 years ago. Six years hence, in 1997, the whole world will venerate his memory and his music in festival performances. Much of that veneration will focus on the Schubc!rt lieder, for his songs - and he wrote well over six hundred of them - reflect his fashioning and refining of a splendid, almost new form of aesthetic expression. "I work every morning," Schubert said of himself. "When I have finished one piece I begin another." (He finished eight, no less, on a single day in 1815, a year in which- in addition to other works- he composed 144 songs! He was only 18, yet each one he wrote that season was crafted with all the care and precision of a Rembrandt working over a miniature.) Concern for text always was central; among the poems he chose were 72 from Goethe and 46 from Schiller. By the time of his nscHERWEISE HSHERMAN'S SONG death (at 31 , even younger than Mozart had been) Schubert had made of the Franz X-von Schlechla Franz Xaver von Sch/echla German Lied a sophisticated, subtle art form. Certainly the Bicentennial to come D 881 (1826) D 881 (1826) will commemorate both that diligence and that mastery. One doubts, however, that any other artist will undertake the task of Den Fischer fechten Sorgen The fisherman is not plagued celebration that John Wustman has set for himself - joyfully, to be sure - a part Und Gram und Leid nicht an; By cares, grief or sorrow. of which we share with him tonight: his intention is nothing less than the live Er lost am friihen Morgen In the early morning he casts off performance of every single Schubert song in a sequence of some thirty recitals Mit leichtem Sinn den Kahn. F Handel (1686-1759) George Frideric Händel, who spent the majority of his career in London, was a German, later British, Baroque composer who became well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi and organ concertos. Before settling in London in 1712, Handel received considerable training in Halleand as a composer in Hamburg and Italy; in 1727 he became a naturalized British subject. He was highly influenced both by the great Italian Baroque composers and by the polyphonic choral tradition of Middle Germany. On classical composers such as Mozart and Beethoven, he would become a major influence. Handel literally starts the work with powerful word painting in the very first aria, or air, of the composition "Ev’ry valley shall be exalted." Many a composer would be able just to write a melody with half of Handel's elegance, but he went far further.

His early musical training in piano and violin lessons came from his father, and his older brother, who were both school teachers (Brown p. 752). Later, he studied under the Viennese court composer Salieri (Brown p.753). After college he became a teacher at his father's school. He detested the teaching profession because it took time away from his compositions. His most prolific year was 1815 during which he wrote 145 songs, including the famous Erlkönig. Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart was a composer in his own right as well as a poet whose works were set by other composers. Die Forelle and An mein Klavier, also set by Schubert, are among his most famous poems (Ossenkop, p.750). Schubart was imprisoned for ten years, from 1777 to 1787, supposedly for insulting the mistress of a Duke (Ossenkop, p.750). In this period of imprisonment, Schubart wrote many of his best works (Ossenkop, p.750). In einem Bächlein helle, Da schoß in froher Eil Die launische Forelle Vorüber wie ein Pfeil.
