  • Frontline's “The Last Abortion Clinic”
CSJ‐ 08 ‐ 0005.0 Frontline’s “The Last Abortion Clinic”: What’s Fair in a Video World? In early 2005, independent film producer Raney Aronson started a new commission for the public television news documentary program, Frontline. She wanted to examine the strategies and tactics of each side in the abortion debate, with a close look at state‐level legislation. Early in the process, Aronson elected to tell the story on two levels: trace the complex history of abortion law since the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision; and also portray how court decisions play out in the lives of individual women. That would allow her to leaven the complex legal history with personal stories for a more compelling piece of cinema. Aronson ultimately decided to focus on the state of Mississippi, a leader in the pro‐life strategy to restrict abortion by using available legal tools. The state had only one abortion clinic still operating. Aronson’s first task was to win the trust and confidence of the champions on both sides of the abortion issue. She also had to gain access to an abortion clinic—not a straightforward proposal in many parts of the country. But her greatest challenge was to achieve a fair account, presented with a tone of informed neutrality. Aronson was well aware that the topic was explosive, value‐laden and divisive. After months of research, negotiation, filming, and successive scripts, Aronson was ready by late September 2005 to make a so‐called “rough cut,” or first draft, matching the script to the video and other material she had.

RD 23 ANNUAL NEWS & DOCUMENTARY EMMY AWARDS NOMINATIONS IMMEDIATE RELEASE Revised: 8/16/02 THE 23RD ANNUAL NEWS AND DOCUMENTARY EMMY AWARD NOMINEES ANNOUNCED BY THE NATIONAL ACADEMY OF TELEVISION ARTS AND SCIENCES New York, July 22, 2002 -- The 23rd Annual News and Documentary Emmy Award nominees were announced today by Peter O. Price, President of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS). "We received a record number of entries this year for the News and Documentary Emmy Awards,” said Price. “Entries totaled 1654, up from last year’s 1450.” The awards recognize outstanding achievement by individuals and programs broadcast during the 2001 calendar year. “These entries and nominations reflect the extraordinary year of television news coverage that 2001 proved to be,” said Bill Small, Vice Chairman for News and Documentaries. “This year’s awards will pay tribute to the role of broadcast journalists in covering 9/11 and the war in Afghanistan, among the most significant news stories in modern history. It will also reflect that same excellence in the coverage of news in other key areas affecting our culture including the AIDS crisis as a world health problem and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” This year, the presentation of the News and Documentary Emmy Awards will be part of a series of events titled “9/11 to 9/11: A Tribute to News Professionals.” The tribute will begin on Monday, September 9, at the Essex House with a noontime lunch for newsmakers and leading television journalists and executives. Later that day, a symposium attended by journalists, television executives, newsmakers and students will be held at Fordham University to study the role of television in covering the current world crisis.

  • Clergy Sexual Abuse
CLERGY SEXUAL ABUSE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF SELECTED SOURCES RELATED TO CLERGY SEXUAL ABUSE, ECCLESIASTICAL POLITICS, THEOLOGY AND CHURCH HISTORY Thomas Patrick Doyle Revised April 29, 2020 1 PREFACE This bibliography started off as a 5-page table of references for a report I was asked to prepare for an attorney. The subject of the report was general prior knowledge of bishops and popes of sexual abuse of children minors by Catholic clergy. Shortly after this report had been circulated among some attorneys I was asked to prepare variations on it. This entailed expanding the table of resources. My original motivation for the bibliography was for strictly private use: I had been collecting articles, scholarly and otherwise, since the emergence of the sexual abuse issue in 1984. I also began buying books about clergy sexual abuse once they started coming out. The very first book that I discovered was Clergy Malpractice, written by the late Robert McMenamin and published in 1988. Robert had been a Church attorney who switched and began representing victims. The bibliography began to grow as I purchased every book I could find related to clergy sexual abuse. I added every scholarly article I could find as well. At some point I decided to add new sections for works published in areas that were either directly or indirectly related to the issue. As I added more books I decided to divide the bibliography into sections. I do not recall exactly when I started developing a mailing list but I believe it was sometime in 2005. By then Dick Sipe, Pat Wall and I were putting the finishing touches on Sex, Priests and Secret Codes which also began as an expanded report on prior notice that reached back to the fourth century.

International Journal of Communication 7 (2013), 1344–1370 1932–8036/20130005 The Green Screen: Neda and the Lost Voices ANDREA DURANTI University of Cagliari The history of contemporary Iran has been characterized by the presence of recurring features, including, among others, a conflictual dialectic between the ruling elite and a variety of dissident movements, and an intensive use of the available mass media in the ideological struggle against the different regimes. This article aims to analyze the role of the new media, with particular regard to Web 2.0 social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Its functions in the genesis of the so-called “Green Movement” related to the contested June 2009 Iranian presidential elections, and in the creation of iconic “martyrs” of the movement itself, like Neda Agha Soltan, wordless “voice” of the protests, are examined. The article reframes these specific events in the broader context of the history of political dissent in Iran. The international impact of the June 2009 protests is also considered, with special reference to the support expressed for the Green Movement by Western journalists, artists, and intellectuals. The Evoking and Performative Power of Images The year was 1980. The Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi had recently been ousted from Iran, and Ayatollah Khomeini had triumphantly returned to Tehran. While the new regime was consolidating its roots, the Polish reporter Ryszard Kapuściński was spending his last few days in the country closed in his hotel room, trying to make some sense of the 1979 Iranian revolution. As the primary sources for what would become his reportage Shah of Shahs (1982), he made use of old photographs, unfinished letters, handwritten notes, cassette recordings of interviews, and newspaper articles he had collected during his stay in Iran (1979–1980).

  • Eyewitness Accounts and Political Claims: Transnational Responses to the 2009 Postelection Protests in Iran
Access Provided by Columbia University at 10/17/11 3:27PM GMT Eyewitness Accounts and Political Claims: Transnational Responses to the 2009 Postelection Protests in Iran Janet A. Alexanian ollowing the June 2009 Iranian presidential election, images of mass protests through- out Iran flooded Western news media. Unlike the prevailing images that have repre- sented Iran in the mainstream press over the past three decades, images of the 2009 demonstrations showed political dissension within the country; these images disrupted the familiar ones of masses of chador- clad women and angry men chanting “Death to America.” Black was replaced with a sea of green, and scenes of violence and police brutality were fore- grounded. The use of social media became central to the emerging narrative about the po- tential for revolution or social change. The growing ability of Iranians to videotape, photograph, and circulate images and events to a global audience through social media was made even more powerful by the near complete dependence of Western news agencies on such sources for information. In turn, Iranians in the United States have used these images—most important, the shooting of Neda Agha- Soltan—as a rallying point to gather support for Iranian protesters and agitate for po- litical change in Iran. During this time of increased geopolitical tension, Iran offers a critical site to examine the escalating battles between governments attempting to control media im- ages and individuals attempting to disrupt that control. This article examines how such battles of call into question the relationship between mass media and national identity and what this Studies presages for the future of political action in the digital age.

Shannon 2010 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT Title: “Veiled Intentions: Islam, Global Feminism, and U.S. Foreign Policy Since the Late 1970s” Candidate’s Name: Kelly J. Shannon Degree: Doctor of Philosophy Temple University, 2010 Doctoral Advisory Committee Chair: Richard Immerman This dissertation explores the ways in which Americans constructed a public discourse about gender relations in Muslim countries from the Iranian Revolution through the post-9/11 period. It argues that discourse significantly influenced U.S. foreign policy in recent decades. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the degree to which women had or lacked rights came to be the barometer by which Americans judged Muslim societies. “Veiled Intentions” demonstrates that perceived women’s oppression became a key feature of U.S. discussions about the Islamic world. Journalists, scholars, women’s rights activists, novelists, filmmakers, politicians, and others in the U.S. created a discourse since 1979 that cast Muslims as particularly oppressive of women. The pervasiveness of such views and lobbying efforts by women’s rights activists pushed policymakers to situate the attainment of rights for women within the constellation of legitimate areas of policy concern regarding the Muslim world.
