TEACHING SPECULATIVE FICTION IN COLLEGE: A PEDAGOGY FOR MAKING ENGLISH STUDIES RELEVANT by JAMES HAMMOND SHIMKUS Under the Direction of Dr. Elizabeth Burmester ABSTRACT Speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror) has steadily gained popularity both in culture and as a subject for study in college. While many helpful resources on teaching a particular genre or teaching particular texts within a genre exist, college teachers who have not previously taught science fiction, fantasy, or horror will benefit from a broader pedagogical overview of speculative fiction, and that is what this resource provides. Teachers who have previously taught speculative fiction may also benefit from the selection of alternative texts presented here. This resource includes an argument for the consideration of more speculative fiction in college English classes, whether in composition, literature, or creative writing, as well as overviews of the main theoretical discussions and definitions of each genre.

    Les Sensations fortes: The phenomenological aesthetics of the French action film DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Matthew Alexander Roesch Graduate Program in French and Italian The Ohio State University 2017 Dissertation Committee: Margaret Flinn, Advisor Patrick Bray Dana Renga Copyrighted by Matthew Alexander Roesch 2017 Abstract This dissertation treats les sensations fortes, or “thrills”, that can be accessed through the experience of viewing a French action film. Throughout the last few decades, French cinema has produced an increasing number of “genre” films, a trend that is remarked by the appearance of more generic variety and the increased labeling of these films – as generic variety – in France. Regardless of the critical or even public support for these projects, these films engage in a spectatorial experience that is unique to the action genre. But how do these films accomplish their experiential phenomenology? Starting with the appearance of Luc Besson in the 1980s, and following with the increased hybrid mixing of the genre with other popular genres, as well as the recurrence of sequels in the 2000s and 2010s, action films portray a growing emphasis on the importance of the film experience and its relation to everyday life. Rather than being direct copies of Hollywood or Hong Kong action cinema, French films are uniquely sensational based on their spectacular visuals, their narrative tendencies, and their presentation of the corporeal form. Relying on a phenomenological examination of the action film filtered through the philosophical texts of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Paul Ricoeur, Mikel Dufrenne, and Jean- Luc Marion, in this dissertation I show that French action cinema is pre-eminently concerned with the thrill that comes from the experience, and less concerned with a ii political or ideological commentary on the state of French culture or cinema.

Mahesh Chandra Guru Professor, Department of Studies in Communication and Journalism, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri Karnataka India ** Dr.M.S.Sapna ***M.Prabhudevand **** Mr.M.Dileep Kumar India ABSTRACT The history of film began in the 1820s when the British Royal Society of Surgeons made pioneering efforts. In 1878 Edward Muybridge, an American photographer, did make a series of photographs of a running horse by using a series of cameras with glass plate film and fast exposure. By 1893, Thomas A. Edison‟s assistant, W.K.L.Dickson, developed a camera that made short 35mm films.In 1894, the Limiere brothers developed a device that not only took motion pictures but projected them as well in France. The first use of animation in movies was in 1899, with the production of the short film. The use of different camera speeds also appeared around 1900 in the films of Robert W. Paul and Hepworth.The technique of single frame animation was further developed in 1907 by Edwin S. Porter in the Teddy Bears. D.W. Griffith had the highest standing among American directors in the industry because of creative ventures. The years of the First World War were a complex transitional period for the film industry. By the 1920s, the United States had emerged as a prominent film making country. By the middle of the 19th century a variety of peephole toys and coin machines such as Zoetrope and Mutoscope appeared in arcade parlors throughout United States and Europe. By 1930, the film industry considerably improved its technical resources for reproducing sound.

Martial Arts, Acting, and Critical Responses to Jet Li’s Once Upon A Time In China Introduction It has been commonplace in western critical discourse to state that action stars can’t act. This seems particularly true when it comes to trans-bordering Chinese action stars like Jet Li. Criticism of his acting skills in his English-language films can be easily picked up from the press: Without the fight scenes, though, this film (Romeo Must Die) would be a bust… ‘Jet is our special effect,’ says Silver, summing up his star’s appeal neatly.1 Li’s martial arts skills are as brilliant as his acting skills aren’t.2 The action is fun and ultra-violent, the story is satisfactorily ridiculous and the acting is non-existent.3 “Good martial artist with limited acting ability” seems to represent a popular view of Chinese martial arts stars and indeed this is how they are often used in Hollywood films. Nevertheless, such a view also reveals a deep-rooted bias, i.e. the martial arts star is someone who knows less about acting than s/he does about fighting.     Miramax's Asian Experiment: Creating a Model for Crossover Hits Lisa Dombrowski , Wesleyan University, US Prior to 1996, no commercial Chinese-language film had scored a breakout hit in the United States since the end of the 1970s kung fu craze. In the intervening period, the dominant distribution model for Asian films in America involved showcasing subtitled, auteur-driven art cinema in a handful of theaters in New York and Los Angeles, then building to ever more screens in a platform fashion, targeting college towns and urban theaters near affluent, older audiences. With the American fan base for Hong Kong action films steadily growing through video and specialized exhibition during the 1980s, Miramax chieftain Harvey Weinstein recognized the opportunity to market more commercial Chinese-language films to a wider audience outside the art cinema model as a means of generating crossover hits. Beginning in 1995, Weinstein positioned Miramax to become the primary distributor of Hong Kong action films in the United States. Miramax's acquisition and distribution strategy for Hong Kong action films was grounded in a specific set of assumptions regarding how to appeal to mass-market American tastes. The company targeted action-oriented films featuring recognizable genre conventions and brand- name stars, considering such titles both favorites of hardcore Hong Kong film fans and accessible enough to attract new viewers. Rather than booking its Hong Kong theatrical acquisitions into art cinemas, Miramax favored wide releases to multiplexes accompanied by marketing campaigns designed to highlight the action and hide the "foreignness" of the films. Miramax initially adopted a strategy of dubbing, re-scoring, re-editing, and often re-titling its Hong Kong theatrical and video/DVD releases in order to make them more appealing to mainstream American audiences.

    Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Gary Westfahl (June 2020) Gary Westfahl, now Professor Emeritus at the University of La Verne and formerly employed at the University of California, Riverside, has retired to focus exclusively on research and writing. His many books on science fiction include two of the University of Illinois Press's Modern Masters of Science Fiction series – “William Gibson” (2013) and “Arthur C. Clarke” (2018) – the three-volume “Greenwood Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy” and “Hugo Gernsback and the Century of Science Fiction.” Marina Akushskaya: What's the main difference between Gibson's early and more recent works? First, there are of course different ways to define Gibson’s “early works.” To me, that would refer to his contributions to science fiction fanzines in the 1960s and 1970s, though I am probably one of the few people who has ever read them. They oddly do little to suggest that he would blossom into an accomplished fiction writer, since he then focused on writing poetry and journalistic nonfiction, and he also drew numerous cartoons. Yet he has continued throughout his career to produce a considerable amount of nonfiction, much of which recalls his earlier efforts and demonstrates both his skills and interest in writing nonfiction. If one defines his “early works” as his publications in the 1980s, it is clear that he initially felt most comfortable writing short fiction, and even his novels tend to contain episodes that could be extracted and published, with minimal editing, as short fiction. But he was determined to master the art of writing true novels, and one can observe in early novels his deliberate efforts to experiment with more complex plots and multiple protagonists; he also prioritized the creation of fully realized female characters.

This project is an examination of the Hong Kong film industry, focusing on the years leading up to the handover of Hong Kong to communist China. The influence of classical Chinese culture on gender representation in martial arts films is examined in order to formulate an understanding of how these films use gender issues to negotiate a sense of cultural identity in the face of unprecedented political change. In particular, the films of Hong Kong action stars Michelle Yeoh and Brigitte Lin are studied within a feminist and cultural studies framework for indications of identity formation through the highlighting of gender issues.
