In examining the wider logic of French imperial expansion around the Mediterranean, this dissertation bridges the Revolutionary, Napoleonic, Restoration (1815-30), July Monarchy (1830-48), Second Republic (1848-52), and Second Empire (1852-70) periods. Moreover, this study represents the first comprehensive study of interactions between imperial officers and local actors around the Mediterranean. -

The method combines observations from the French Alpine region rain gauges and precipitation estimates from weather radars with background information from short-range nu- merical weather prediction forecasts in an optimal way. The performance of this technique is evaluated using measurements of precipitation and of snow depth during two years (2012/13 and 2013/14). It is shown that the 1DVar model allows an effective assimilation of measurements of different types, including rain gauge and radar-derived precipitation. The use of radar-derived precipitation rates over mountains to force the nu- merical snowpack model Crocus significantly reduces the bias and standard deviation with respect to in- dependent snow depth observations. The improvement is particularly significant for large rainfall or snowfall events, which are decisive for avalanche hazard forecasting. The use of radar-derived precipitation rates at an hourly time step improves the time series of precipitation analyses and has a positive impact on simulated snow depths. -

Numerical simulations were performed with the mesoscale non-hydrostatic model Meso-NH, using three nested domains (with horizontal resolutions 32, 8 and 2 km), the 2 km resolution domain being centred on the Po valley. The basic data–model comparison, and back-trajectory and tracer release analyses, provided evidence that the jet/wake structure of the flow above the Po valley could be reasonably identified with the mountain pass/peak distributions. Measurements from three aircraft flying below the Alps crestline (at 2700, 1500 and 600 m above sea level) along two 350 km east–west legs, designed to be approximately perpendicular to the northerly synoptic flow, were used to compute the potential vorticity (PV) experimentally assuming the lee-side flow to be two-dimensional. -

LA COSCRIZIONE NAPOLEONICA NEI DIPARTIMENTI ITALIANI DELL’IMPERO Le prime leve francesi in Piemonte (1802-1805) 1. L’introduzione della coscrizione francese in Piemonte 1.1. La tradizione piemontese dei Reggimenti provinciali Al pari dell’Indelta svedese, i reggimenti provinciali sabaudi erano una delle più famose e apprezzate milizie dell’Europa di antico re- gime, e certo la migliore in Italia. Creati nel 1713 come struttura per- manente su progetto del generale estone Rehbinder e con una forza di 7.200 uomini, derivavano dalle milizie scelte piemontesi, nizzarde, savoiarde, valdesi e aostane che dal 1703 al 1706, durante la guerra di successione spagnola, avevano fornito oltre 30.000 combattenti. Po- tenziata durante la guerra di successione polacca, la milizia provin- ciale fu impiegata ancor più largamente durante la guerra di succes- sione austriaca. Dal 1742 al 1749 furono chiamati alle armi 22.889 pro- vinciali, circa un decimo degli atti alle armi: tuttavia quasi la metà (10.659) furono regolarmente congedati per eccedenza alla quota (5.409), inidoneità (1.692), ragioni di famiglia (969), surrogazione di fratello o agnato (858), inabilità (696), ingiusto arruolamento (654), gratificazione (306) e anzianità di servizio (171). Dei rimanenti 12.220, più di un quarto (3.255) disertarono e quasi metà (46%) persero la vita durante la guerra. Solo 534 (4.3%) morirono in battaglia o per ferite: stenti e malattie ne uccisero il decuplo (5.061). Altri 252 fu- rono cassati dai ranghi per indegnità e 32 fucilati o condannati alla galera. Nel 1748 ne restavano in servizio il 41 per cento (5.099) di cui più di un terzo disertori graziati (1.981). -

Results of entomological researches carried out in Varaita Valley (Cuneo, Pied - mont, Italy) are given. A list of 185 carabid beetles species (Cicindelinae included) knows so far from this valley is provided. For each species a list of localities and the patterns of distribution (chorotypes of each species) are also reported. Fur - thermore, the main observed ground beetle assemblages are described.
