I also made Mr Nelson Mandela the appeal: “Don’t call me, I’ll call you.” FOUNDER OF THE FOUNDATION I was able to make this decision to take a less active role because the organisations that I set up to carry on my work are now well established. The three organisations that bear my name – the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, the Mandela Rhodes Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Foundation – are working well, each charged to give expression to a specific aspect of human and social development. These organisations will now carry on my work and it is time for attention to shift from the individual to their activities and achievements. This Annual Report of the Nelson Mandela Foundation is eloquent testimony of my confidence that the principles and issues in which I believe, and have fought for throughout my life, will be continued and developed, both in South Africa and internationally. I am as committed as ever that people are not enslaved by poverty or oppression or bigotry and that every person is valued for who they are and is able to have the opportunity to grow and to have genuine choices. As I travel around the country and the world I continue to be touched, amazed and energised by the response of people to the issues that challenge our troubled planet – be this a concern for those affected by HIV and AIDS, or those incarcerated by poverty or denied life’s chances because of poor education. These are concerns that are at the forefront of the Foundation’s work, and we need to mobilise the energies and skills of people of goodwill everywhere to join in the challenges to address them.
