The opening night selection for its 2019 festival is Universal Pictures’ YESTERDAY, a Working Title production written by Oscar nominee Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, and Notting Hill) from a story by Jack Barth and Richard Curtis, and directed by Academy Award® winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting, 28 Days Later). The film tells the story of Jack Malik (Himesh Patel), a struggling singer-songwriter in a tiny English seaside town who wakes up after a freak accident to discover that The Beatles have never existed, and only he remembers their songs. Sony Pictures Classics’ MAIDEN, directed by Alex Holmes, will close the festival. This immersive documentary recounts the thrilling story of Tracy Edwards, a 24-year-old charter boat cook who became the skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. The 24th Nantucket Film Festival runs June 19-24, 2019, and celebrates the art of screenwriting and storytelling in cinema. A24’s THE FAREWELL, written and directed by Lulu Wang, will screen as the festival’s Centerpiece film. -

Region in focus: Bucharest-Ilfov Bucharest-Ilfov Region, formed by Bucharest, Romania’s capital and Ilfov County – is located in the central part of the Romanian Plain in southern Ro- mania. Bucharest is the largest urban agglomeration of the country; its num- bers approaching 2 million inhabitants represents more than 85% from the total region’s population. Romanian legend says that the city of Bucharest was founded on the banks of the Dambovita River by a shepherd named Bucur, whose name literally means ”joy”. His flute playing reportedly dazzled the people and his hearty wine from nearby vineyards endeared him to the local traders, who gave his name to the place. Known for its wide, tree-lined boulevards, glorious Belle Époque buildings and a re- putation for the highlife (which in the 1900s earned its nickname of ”Little Paris”), Bucharest is today a bustling metropolis. For this reason film productions began shoo- ting in Bucharest and it did not take long for international producers and filming com- panies to discover and appreciate the rich historical heritage of the city. In fact, more than 200 productions have been filmed, entirely or partially in Bucha- rest and its surrounding areas, most of them in the last ten years. 1 Small Wonder Philip Horne DOWNSIZING [February 2018, Sight & Sound] There has been a long and somewhat anxious wait among admirers of Alexander Payne’s films since Nebraska in 2013 – a bleak, beautiful, drily funny picture of the post-industrial Midwest and sad, haunted lives. Four years later Payne, who still lives in his native Omaha, has come out with a grand, astonishingly daring movie – a satirical fable, or blackly comic science fiction epic, or unexpected love story. As it goes on, there’s a serious, even tragic side to the film, but its main premise is treated with such inventiveness both visual and verbal that we get constant jolts of pleasure at the imaginative scope of its makers’ conceptions. The absurd technology that scientists concerned with ‘Human Scale and Sustainability’ and climate change develop for reducing the size of the human population – by making them five inches high – is in effect like a giant microwave: it even pings when the transformation is complete. It’s deliberately low-tech. The process, invented by idealistic Norwegians to produce a ‘self- sustainable community of the small’, is imagined being then commercialised and normalised in familiar ways by global/American capitalism, sold to punters as a time-share-like ‘heaven’ called ‘Leisureland’, which is ‘like winning the lottery every day’. This because a modest nest-egg of $152,000 when transferred (unshrunk) to its newly-tiny owner’s account in a ‘small city’ translates as the equivalent of $22,5000,000: it’s an American dream. The script is full of delicious size jokes, as downsizing becomes absorbed into idiom and things get re-scaled, so that we see ‘the first small baby ever born’. -

Frequently Asked Questions Do we have to use Bob Fosse’s choreography in our production of PIPPIN? Stephen Schwartz: Bob Fosse’s choreography contributed an enormous amount to the show, both conceptually and in pure dance terms (though, frankly, even I found it a little heavy on the bumps-and-grinds at times). But I have seen several productions of the show, particularly at the high school and community theatre level, that used different choreography (obviously), and as long as they maintained the cynicism of the Players and the sensuality of the movement, it worked very well. What is the history of PIPPIN? Stephen Schwartz: PIPPIN began as a show for the Scotch ‘n’ Soda club at Carnegie Mellon University in 1967. Scotch ‘n’ Soda produced an original musical every year, and I had written the songs for the musicals my two previous years there. A friend of mine, Ron Strauss, had seen a paragraph in a history textbook about the son of Charlemagne launching a revolution against his father, and he had begun writing a musical about the idea. We decided to collaborate, thinking it would be fun to do something like a musical “Lion in Winter,” with lots of court intrigue and crackling dialogue. The show was entitled PIPPIN, PIPPIN. The following year, I received a letter from a young man who represented himself to be a New York producer and who said he had heard the album we had made of PIPPIN, PIPPIN and was interested in developing it as a Broadway musical. Ron was (wisely) more suspicious of this letter than I and decided he didn’t want to pursue it.
