Bryan Professor of Hispanic Studies Lexington, Kentucky 2004 Copyright © Jeremy Leeds Cass 2004 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION FASHIONING AFROCUBA: FERNANDO ORTIZ AND THE ADVENT OF AFROCUBAN STUDIES, 1906-1957 This study attempts to organize the conglomerate of writing on Africans within Republican Cuba. Starting with an examination of the scientific stages of such writing, we will trace the assorted work of Fernando Ortiz (1881-1969), whose anthropological study of Afrocuba produced myriad readings of the heritage. The multiplicity of renderings of Cuba s Africans from the scientific arena including condemning, racially charged treatises and spiritual conceptualizations of the richness of Cuba s African heritage generated an air of inconstancy. Indeed, the contradictions generated by the discipline s scientific course were incredibly polarized, representative of an ambiguity that became emblematic of Afrocuban Studies. Regardless of such blatant ideological opposition, tracing Ortiz s anthropological reading of the place of Cuba s Africans among the nation provides a telling insight into the racialized circumstances surrounding Republican nation-building. Whether scientific research scorned Cuba s Africans or applauded their inclusion in the national imaginary, Ortiz s writing and his invitations to Cuba s younger scholars to partake of folk study outlines a succinct treatment of Cuban nation-building between 1902 and 1959. If scientific research on Afrocuba promulgated studies that both cherished and demonized Cuba s Africanness, so too did Afrocuba s artistic invocations bear contradiction. After the vogue of the African swept the 1920s Parisian art scene, Africanized artistic currents infiltrated Cuba and mingled with its scientific counterpart. The ensuing readings of Afrocuba, contradictory and complex, spurred both research-art overlaps and the rejection of scientific tenets for a so-called artistically authentic rendering of Afrocuba that is, a reading from the inside, from within Afrocuba. It is along these lines that fiction writers (including Alejo Carpentier, Lydia Cabrera, and Rómulo Lachatañeré) posted renderings of Afrocuba that partook of various degrees of science, research, and artistic vogue. The resultant narrative system portrayed three different sorts of Afrocuban literature; none of the writers aligned succinctly in their portrayal. Afrocuba s poetic front was even more varied in its evocation of the nation, the academy, and popular art. In this way, Nicolás Guillén, Ramón Guirao, Juan Marinello, and Emilio Ballagas encapsulated unique poetic visions on two fronts: through offerings to Afrocuban poetics and through essays on the Afrocuban poetic mode. We shall examine such pieces in the hopes of understanding the balanced interplay that academic research and artistic invocation absorbed in the nation-building process, in the fashioning of Afrocuba. INTRODUCTION During my stay at the Hispanic Research Center (HRC) of Arizona State University, from January to June 2011, I had the chance to meet two of the three authors that I was investigating for my Doctoral thesis: the New Mexican novelist Nash Candelaria and the Cuban American writer and scholar Andrea O’Reilly Herrera. The interview with Nash Candelaria took place at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on May 31st, 2011. The author, together with his wife Doranne, welcomed me along with Professor Gary Francisco Keller and two staff members of the HRC. This visit was actually made possible thanks to the priceless support provided by Dr. Keller, who allowed me to take part in the trip held at various locations in New Mexico (Acoma, Albuquerque, Chimayó, Santa Fe, Taos and Zuni, among others) from the 28th of May to the 5th of June 2011, as part of his research project San Francis and the Americas/San Francisco en las Américas.1 The first three questions of the interview were emailed to Nash Candelaria in advance, so that he could have more time to reflect on the answers, which were given to me on a printed sheet the day of our meeting.     Cuba Rebecca Bodenheimer LAST MODIFIED: 26 MAY 2016 DOI: 10.1093/OBO/9780199757824­0184 Introduction This article treats folkloric and popular musics in Cuba; literature on classical music will be included in the article entitled “Classical Music in Cuba.” Music has long been a primary signifier of Cuban identity, both on and off the island. Among small nations, Cuba is almost unparalleled in its global musical reach, an influence that dates back to the international dissemination of the contradanza and habanera in the 19th century. The 1930s constituted a crucial decade of Cuban musical influence, as the world was introduced to the genre son (mislabeled internationally as “rumba”/”rhumba”) with the hit song “El Manicero.” In the 1990s Cuban music underwent yet another international renaissance, due to both the emergence of a neotraditional style of son related to the success of the Buena Vista Social Club project, and the crystallization of a new style of Cuban dance music called timba. Moreover, Afro­ Cuban folkloric music has enjoyed increased visibility and attention, and has become a focal point of the tourism industry that the Castro regime began to expand as a response to the devastating economic crisis precipitated by the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. Research on Cuban music has a long and distinguished history that began in earnest in the late 1920s and 1930s with the publications of Cuba’s most celebrated scholar, Fernando Ortiz. Many of Ortiz’s students, such as musicologist Argeliers León and folklorist Miguel Barnet, went on to form the backbone of Cuban folklore research after the Revolution in 1959.

PEDRAZA Church and State 2 CHURCH, REVOLUTION, NATION In a predominantly Catholic country, the changing relationship of the Catholic Church to the revolution was a key part of the process of social change – political, social, economic – that took place in Cuba from the end of the 1950s until today. The data for this research come from the 120 in-depth interviews I conducted with Cubans who lived through various stages of the Cuban revolution and who were representative (in social class, race, gender, family composition) of those who left the island from 1959 to 2005. The interviews resulted from participant observation and in many different cities where the Cuban diaspora settled: Miami, Hialeah, Homestead, and Key West; the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Manhattan in New York city; Union City, Paterson, and Elizabeth; Boston and Amherst; Chicago; Los Angeles; Houston and Huntsville; Phoenix; Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint, Ypsilanti, and Lansing; St. Louis; and New Orleans; as well as Montreal, Canada; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Madrid, Spain (Pedraza 2007). To organize the data from the interviews, I chose Nelson Amaro’s (1981) depiction of the process of social change in the beginning years of the revolution (1959-62) as comprising five different stages: democracy, humanism, nationalism, socialism, and Marxism-Leninism.

    ¡ Globalization III time, a trap: a different world that was not merely suspect, but was long since well on the way to taking possession of their own. Without a doubt, the Hispanoamerican intellectual who was essential to this concept was the Cuban José Martí, who through his unceasing activity while in US American exile first unleashed that war in 1895 in which the US, ful- ly conscious of its power, would then intervene so successfully. From today’s point of view, one may consider it given that the earliest theorist of the third phase of accelerated globalization was undoubtedly José Martí, yet the greater portion of his work responds to the challenges of this exceedingly turbulent phase of history with an answer that is equally decisive and determined. But who was this thinker, revered even today in Latin America, yet still generally unknown in Europe? The Abundance of Absence Perhaps the best, if not the simplest answer to this question was given to us by a writer who is certainly one of the greatest of the 20 th century. At the end of the third of five lectures that he held between the 16 th and 26 th of January, 1957, in the Centro de Altos Estudios at the Instituto Nacional de Cultura in Havana, José Lezama Lima attempted to place the figure of José Martí into the light of a tradi- tion of absence: But this great romantic tradition of the 19 th century, that of the dungeon, of absence, of the picture, and of death, succeeds in creating the American fact, the fate of which consists more of possible absences than of impossible presences.
