Saint Lucia led the way as the world responded to last week’s Dominica disaster. The ‘De- fender’, which is the flagship of the Marine Unit of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF), was the first vessel to arrive in Dominica with supplies and volunteers. NEMO was the first national emergency agency to jump into action, requesting early basic help two days after the calamity. Dominican Prime Minister Roosevelt Skeritt came to Saint Lucia immediately after the disaster. Prime Minister Dr Kenny D. Anthony was the first foreign leader to visit the island to assess the damage. The first disaster relief accounts in commercial banks outside Dominica were opened here. The helicopter supplied by Trinidad & Tobago operated out of the helicopter base at Vigie. But it isn’t only Saint Lucia. The rest of the Caribbean reacted with remarkable speed after Erika rained death and destruction on Dominica. The Caribbean – from Venezuela and the ALBA-TCP Grouping to Saint Kitts -- led the way and the rest of the world followed with similar demonstrated zeal to help. The UN, the UK, the USA and have all chipped in early as well. We’ve been there, so we know what it’s like. Tomas and the Christmas Eve Trough both caught us off guard, at huge loss and great cost. Saint Lucia and Saint Lucians have responded as we have because we are our neighbours’ keepers. Besides, it’s the only natu- ral and human thing to do.
