How- ever, if you leaf through it and look around our beauti- ful country, you may discover that it belongs to the present as well. Many changes have taken place. The history of the Church in this country is also the history of this nation. And the history of the nation, of the country’s inhabitants, always has been and still is the history of the Church. The Church’s mission is to serve mankind, and we want to fulfil Jesus’s call: “I did not come to be served but to serve.” The beautiful and unique pastoral constitution of Vatican Coun- cil II, the document “Joy and Hope” begins with the words: “The joys and the hopes, the grief and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the grief and anxieties of the followers of Christ.” This is the task that hundreds of thousands of men and women in this country strive to carry out. According to expert statistical estimates, approximately three million Roman Catholics live in our country along with almost twenty thousand of our Eastern broth- ers and sisters in the Greek Catholic Church, with whom we are in full communion. There are an additional million Christians who belong to a variety of other Churches. "Queremos dizer aos prelados católicos que deixem de fingir que o pior já passou" sobre o escândalo de pedofilia dentro da Igreja, declarou David Clohessy, diretor da Rede de Sobreviventes de Abusados por Padres (Snap, na sigla em inglês). "Tragicamente, o pior com certeza ainda estar por vir", indicou Clohessy, ao acrescentar que a verdade dos abusos e encobrimentos "generalizados há muito tempo e profundamente arraigados ainda não chegou à superfície na maioria das nações". Congreso Internacional de Pastoral de las Grandes Ciudades Catholic.net Cardenales y arzobispos de grandes metrópolis de todo el mundo viajarán a Barcelona del 24 al 26 de noviembre para participar en la fase conclusiva del Congreso Internacional de Pastoral de las Grandes Ciudades, que debate los retos pastorales que afectan las metrópolis. JOZEF GLEMP To Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz Archbishop of Warsaw I learned with sorrow of the death of Cardinal Józef Glemp, Archbishop emeritus of Gniezno and of Warsaw, Primate of Poland. I join you, dear Brother, the Presbyterate and the faithful of the Church in Poland in the prayers of thanksgiving for the life and pastoral ministry of this praiseworthy minister of the Gospel. His episcopal motto, Caritati in iustitia — for charity in justice — accompanied him throughout his life and directed his way of thinking, evaluating, making choices, taking decisions and offering guidelines for pastoral action. He was a “just” man in the spirit of St Joseph, his Patron and the Patron of all those who in the biblical tradition could hear the voice of God addressing his call not only to them personally, but also to the communities to which they had been sent. This justice, full of humble adherence to God’s will, formed the basis of his deep love for God and for people. It was his light, inspiration and strength in the demanding ministry of steering the Church through an epoch in which important social and political transformations affected both Poland and Europe. Love of God and love of the Church, concern for the life and dignity of every man and woman made him an apostle of unity against division, of concord in the face of conflict. Thus the common construction of a happy future is founded on its joyful and painful experiences of the Church and of the people. -

Membro della prima Commissione Presbiterale Italiana Per decisione della C.E.I., è stata istituita la Commissione Pre- sbiterale Italiana, composta da due sacerdoti eletti da ciascuna delle Commissioni Regionali del Clero e dai rappresentanti di alcuni Or- dini religiosi in Italia. Sono stato eletto rappresentante del Clero della Regione Puglia e riconfermato per altre due volte, e quindi ho partecipato alle riu- nioni trimestrali per ben quindici anni. Insieme ad altri cinque, sono stato designato dai membri della C.P.I. a partecipare alle assemblee annuali della C.E.I. due volte (1975 e 1980). Quasi tutti i Consiglieri sono stati nominati cardinali (Giovanni Saldarini e Domenico Calcagno) e vescovi. Ho collaborato con i presidenti Guglielmo Giaquinta, Enrico Bartoletti, Luigi Maverna, Ennio Antonelli e Giuseppe Betori. La C.E.I. ha sempre provveduto alle spese di vitto e alloggio a Roma e altrove. La C.E.P. doveva provvedere al rimborso delle spese per il viaggio, erogate dalla C.E.I. tramite la C.E.P. Non ho ricevuto mai rimborsi, anche se richiesti per iscritto. Agli inizi e nei primi anni la C.P.I. ha dato il mio contributo sui problemi che riguardavano il clero italiano. Nei primi anni abbiamo lavorato per proporre soluzioni su pro- blemi economici, formativi e pastorali del Clero, discussi anche in sotto commissioni riunite quasi sempre in amene località dell’Italia settentrionale. Con il passare degli anni, come avviene per gli altri organismi di partecipazione ecclesiale, l’O.d.g., preparato dal direttivo con il pre- sidente, si riduceva ad ascoltare qualche conferenziere sulla forma- zione permanente del Clero, sui problemi della Scuola in Italia, dell’Unione Europea, dell’A.C.I., ecc. -

ELECTION DU FUTUR PAPE Les Cardinaux se rassemblent Alors que le Collège des cardinaux s’est rassemblé ce 4 mars 2013 pour sa première et deuxième congrégation générale, en vue du conclave qui élira le prochain pape, voici quelques informations sur les cardinaux électeurs, au nombre de 117. Parmi eux, 50 ont été créés cardinaux par Jean-Paul II et 67 par Benoît XVI. 74 de ces cardinaux ont plus de 70 ans. Une trentaine ont entre 60 et 70 ans. Cinq ont moins de 60 ans. Le plus jeune est l’Indien Baselios Cleemis Thottunkal (53 ans). Le plus âgé est le cardinal Walter Kasper qui aura 80 ans demain, 5 mars. Répartition géographique : 61 cardinaux viennent d’Europe tandis que 33 viennent d’Amérique (17 d’Amérique du Nord, 3 d’Amérique centrale-Caraïbes et 13 d’Amérique du sud). 11 viennent d’Asie et également 11 d’Afrique.
