President’s Ponderings Table of Contents February 2020 P 3-4 – Events Calendar

P 5 – Board Meeting The vaccine has arrived and is the first step in APT being able to Minutes revitalize our social activities. Several of our members have received both doses of the vaccine, while more have received the P 9– Membership Musings first dose and awaiting the second. There are also those members who have not been able to obtain that first dose, but hopefully will P 10 – Poet’s Corner be obtaining an appointment shortly. P 11 – Legislative Update It remains to be seen how long it will take to get the vast majority of the population vaccinated against Covid-19. Healthcare experts, P 14 – Current Club working with the CDC, have made the following list of Do’s and Activities Don’ts as they relate to the Covid-19 vaccine:  DO: Get your vaccine when it's your turn. P 16 – Birthdays and Anniversaries  DON'T: Let disinformation on vaccines cloud your judgment.  DO: Get vaccinated if you've already had Covid-19.  DON'T: Get a shot if you currently have Covid-19 or have been exposed.  DO: Get the shot even if you still have Covid-19 symptoms months later.  DON'T: Get another type of vaccine within 14 days of the Covid-19 shot.  DO: Tell vaccine staff about any allergies or past allergic reactions.  DON'T: Drive away before your 15- to 30-minute wait is up.  DO: Get your second shot of vaccine within the recommended time frame.  DO: Continue wearing masks and practicing social distancing after your shots. Even though you may have received both doses of the vaccine, the new federal task force for the pandemic (as well as the CDC) recommends that you continue to wear a face mask and maintain social distancing whenever possible. Indoor dinning and drinking is still not recommended, although outdoor dining, if tables are properly spaced and everyone is wearing a mask (except while eating), is felt to be

1 Aptitudes Jan-Feb 2021 safe. Unfortunately, we still have a couple of months before outdoor dining is practical. Even outdoors, it is recommended that tables not include more than 6 people and be space for social distancing.

We have had several members contract the Covid-19 virus and they continue to recover. The members of the Board of Directors recently did an outreach to all active member reminding them that if they needed assistance during this pandemic, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will provide what assistance we are able to. We do not want any of our member to miss getting a vaccine or other health related services because they do not have transportation or the funds to pay for their healthcare. Take care and be safe, John Hudson President, Atlanta Prime Timers

Membership Musings by Richard Harlan With Covid-19 still raging and vaccination scheduling difficult, it is good to hear how so many of you have gotten at least your first and some your second injection. On other fronts, we should be glad what we don’t live in Texas. I did for 10 years and I can testify that what happened is not surprising. Even the longhorns know better. And have you lately pulled up to the wrong side of the pumps from a senior moment? I still do and it must be 20 years since I had a gas cap on the other side. In these times of tension and stress, we just have to keep laughing. I am looking forward to better weather and at least some outdoor events for us soon. Persevere and keep safe.

All winter long, we hear the colors sing. From underneath the earth, they long to grow. All winter long, we look for signs of spring until we see the colors that we sow.

This is the work and wonder that we share -- worth more than all the books upon the shelves. And like those colors that we know are there, we hear them sing somewhere inside ourselves.

Inside ourselves and deep beneath the ground, all winter long, they sing to everyone. The signs of spring are waiting all around. They’re ours to hold and lift up to the sun!

And when we think that winter will not end, we see the colors sing within a friend.

Legislative Update by Jeff Willard

If everything was back to normal, we would have asked Jeff Willard to provide us with insight on the Legislature at our January Meeting. While the current pandemic prevents us from having in person presentation, Jeff has graciously provided us with information concerning the upcoming sessions of the Georgia Legislature that directly impacts our members, both as member of the LGBTQ as well as those of us who voted via Absentee Ballots in these past elections. The federal government will ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity under the Fair Housing Act, and will investigate complaints from LGBTQ tenants and homebuyers since Jan. 20, 2020.

Executive Orders

President Biden signed an Executive Order that directs Federal Agencies to enforce Federal Laws prohibiting sex discrimination in a manner that also prohibits anti-LGBTQ discrimination in a variety of areas, including employment, education, housing, health care and credit for Federal Government employees. This reverses President Trump’s Executive Order.

President Biden signed an executive order to repeal President Trump’s ban on most transgender Americans joining the military that reversed President Trump’s Executive Order.

LGBTQ Legislation

The Equality Act - HUGE DISSAPOINTMENT!

President Biden promised the historic Equality Act would be one of his top priorities upon taking office. It now looks like it might take longer than he hoped to pass. The landmark legislation would amend existing law to explicitly prohibit discrimination based upon sexual orientation and gender identity. The Bill has been introduced in the House. According to a report in LGBTQ Nation, participants on the call said the Biden’s transition team they are pulling back from that commitment and will not push the Bill in the Senate. So a quick passage of the act might not be possible after all.

APT Virtual Book Club

The APT Virtual Book Club has continued to meet monthly and it is a great way to socialize, albeit virtually. The meetings are full of lively discussion.

At our January meeting we discussed the debut novel Shuggie Bain by Douglas Stuart. This book was a New York Times best seller and was awarded the Booker prize for 2020. The book tells the story of a gay 14 Aptitudes Jan-Feb 2021 child growing up in Scotland, in poverty. Shuggie’s mother is a very beautiful woman who is also an alcoholic. The book opens with Shuggie, as a teenager, selling himself to survive. It then goes back to tell his story. Shuggie has two older half siblings. They try to protect Shuggie, but end up being driven away by the alcoholic mother. Shuggie’s Dad has abandoned the family. Shuggie is seen as “very different” by the other children that he goes to school with. Eventually, Shuggie’s mother drinks herself to death, leaving Shuggie to survive by himself. This was not a light read, but was very well written. The book club agreed that our next read should definitely be something a little less dark.

Our February meeting was a discussion of Gordon Merrick’s The Lord Won’t Mind. This book was first published in 1970 and became a New York Times Bestseller. This is very surprising as it about two men who fall in love, and includes some very explicit sex scenes. It tells the story of Charlie, in his early twenties who lives with, and is controlled by his wealthy grandmother. Another young man, Peter, is invited to visit for the summer. The year is 1939. When Charlie picks up Peter at the train station, he is a bit disconcerted. He finds Peter attractive, but is very critical of his clothing and manners and decides to re=mold Peter into a more sophisticated gentleman. Charlie does so, by seducing Peter into his bed. They fall in love and at the end of summer move to New York City together. Charlie insists on staying closeted, especially from his grandmother, who controls his income. Under pressure Charlie starts seeing women. He ends up marrying one and Peter is forced out of the apartment they shared. Peter ends up getting by developing sexual encounters with wealthy gay men. Peter eventually is offered an apartment and given $50,000 by a gentleman who only asks Peter to let him see Peter naked occasionally. Peter uses the money to invest and is very good at it. He becomes wealthy. Charlie, meanwhile, flounders with his foray into the theater and ends up having a brutal, violent fight with his wife, which dissolves the marriage. Charlie, still tries to stay closeted, but his grandmother confronts him and says she will no longer help him financially. Charlie seeks out Peter and Peter still loves him. They end up becoming a happy couple as Charlie also becomes recognized as an esteemed artist. This was the first bestseller with a gay theme, that had a happy ending. Merrick went on to publish two more books about Charlie and Peter.

Next up, we will read Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. This is a story of how the young adult son of the President falls in love with a royal Prince. This is also a bestseller and has been declared the best book of the year by NPR, Vogue Vanity Fair, etc. We will discuss this book at our March meeting (March 31st at 3 pm.0 If you would like more information about the book club, contact Peter Stearns at [email protected]
