Sparse research has been conducted in the Banpale forest and to improve the understanding of bat diversity, an updated species checklist was prepared. Trapping surveys using mist nets were conducted at four diferent locatons in the forest from March to May 2018. This survey identfed 55 individuals belonging to eight species within eight genera and four families. Trapping locatons near less disturbed forest edges and water resources were found to have higher bat diversity compared to highly disturbed areas (e.g., landslides and logging areas). With informaton from survey and secondary source, we conclude that Banpale forest harbours 10 of the 53 bat species found in Nepal. We recommend adoptng practces to conserve the forest from landslides and minimizing illegal logging to conserve bat forest habitats. Keywords: Checklist, Chiroptera, edge, habitat, logging, trapping. Newsletter of the Department of Ecology & Biodiversity, The University of Hong Kong Hong Kong's Bad Biodiversity Aliens - also known as exotics or introduced species - are species which did not occur here naturally but have been brought to Hong Kong by humans, either deliberately, as crops, ornamentals, domestic animals or pets, or accidentally, as stowaways in ships and cargo planes, as seeds or eggs in soil, or attached to shoes or clothing. Most species which arrive in this way do not "escape" to form wild populations, and most of the species which have escaped are confined to places that are continually disturbed by humans. The weeds of cultivated areas, roadsides and urban wasteland are mostly exotics, as are the fish in concrete channels, and such conspicuous urban invertebrates as the "American" Cockroach and the Giant African Snail. Most of these urban exotics are doing no obvious harm and some contribute positively to the quality of city life. However, they also form the pool of species from which are drawn the small number of ecologically-damaging ones: the invasive species. Invasive species are aliens that invade natural or semi-natural communities. Out of the 150 or so well-established alien plant species in Hong Kong, less than a dozen have become invasive. The climbing American composite Mikania micrantha – Mile-a-Minute – is the most obvious example, but even this is confined to relatively disturbed sites. The "success" rate seems to be higher among birds and mammals, but the species which have done well in natural habitats are all from tropical East Asia and are apparently occupying niches vacated by the loss of the same or closely-related species when Hong Kong was deforested centuries ago.

The study was carried out in four different habitat types (secondary forest, plantation forest, agroforest, and tourist area) on the southern slope of Mount Slamet, Baturaden Forest, Central Java, Indonesia from July 2009 to August 2010. A total of 99 species belonging to eight families showed a dominance of Nymphalidae (30 species) followed by Pieridae (17 species), Lycaenidae (15 species), Papilionidae (13 species), Satyridae (11 species), Danaidae (6 species), Amathusidae (4 species), and Riodinidae (3 species). From the 99 butterflies species found on the southern slope of Mount Slamet, 32 species (30%) were specific to the forest, whereas 63 species (60.6%) were common to all habitats sampled, and the last 10 species (9.4%) were endemics species with one protected species (Troides helena). The present results was showed that butterflies diversity, abundance, and endemism is still relatively high, representing 18% of all butterfly species found in Java and supporting 71.4% endemic species found in Central Java. The plantation forest were contributed the highest diversity and abundance of butterfly species, whereas the agroforest showed the lowest diversity, abundance, and endemism.

In this study, a field survey was conducted in five fixed-distance belt transects during three years. Four indices were used to indicate the butterfly diversity. A total of 3004 individuals of 151 species belonging to 82 genera in 6 families were recorded in the survey. Among them, 67 species were recorded in Simian Mountain for the first time, and Celastrina argiolus (Linnaeus, 1758) was the dominant species; Nymphalidae was the dominant family.   • The Wildlife (Protection) Act and Conservation Prioritization of Butterflies of the Western Ghats, Southwestern India
    GENERAL ARTICLE The Wildlife (Protection) Act and conservation prioritization of butterflies of the Western Ghats, southwestern India Krushnamegh Kunte Various schedules of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 (henceforth WPA), dictate the level of legal protection given to species of Indian animals. Shortcomings of the schedules of the WPA with respect to insects have been pointed out, but no solutions have been suggested. Here I have used butterflies of the Western Ghats as a case study, analysed their conservation values with multiple species attributes and then compared my findings with the species listed under the WPA. Analysis shows that a large proportion of species with high conservation values, many of them narrowly endemic and endangered, are not listed under the WPA, indicating the need to expand the listings. This methodology can be used to objectively assess conservation values of other animals and their inclu- sion in the WPA.
