Arts-Based Methods for Decolonising Participatory Research Arts-Based Methods for Decolonising Participatory Research In an effort to challenge the ways in which colonial power relations and Eurocentric knowledges are reproduced in participatory research, this book explores whether and how it is possible to use arts-based methods for creating more horizontal and democratic research practices. In discussing both the transformative potential and limitations of arts-based methods, the book asks: What can arts-based methods contribute to decolonising participatory research and its processes and practices? The book takes part in ongoing debates related to the need to decolonise research, and investigates practical contributions of arts-based methods in the practice-led research domain. Further, it discusses the role of artistic research in depth, locating it in a decolonising context. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, design, fine arts, service design, social sciences and development studies. These steps are the rst towards establishing an eResearch Initiative at the North-West University from an IT perspective. Other eResearch partners are also gearing up to embrace technology in research support. According to Mrs Elsa Esterhuizen, director of Potchefstroom Campus Library Services, eResearch highlights the importance of dovetailing between the various role-players. The Library Services do not only provide access to accredited information sources, but also training and support in the use of research tools. The Research Commons allows exclusive access to postgraduates and researchers. This collaborative hub offers relevant infrastructure enhancing the research process.

History of Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia In the ambitious age of reform following the American Revolution, the new nation aspired to change profoundly its public institutions, and to set an example for the world in social development. Every type of institution that we are familiar with today—educational, medical and governmental—was revolutionized in these years by the rational and humanistic principles of the Enlightenment. Of all of the radical innovations born in this era, American democracy was, of course, the most influ- ential. The second major intellectual export was prison design and reform. Most eighteenth century prisons were simply large holding pens. Groups of adults and children, men and women, and petty thieves and murderers, sorted out their own affairs behind locked doors. Physical punishment and mutilation were common, and abuse of the prisoners by the guards and overseers was assumed. In 1787, a group of well-known and powerful Philadelphians convened in the home of Benjamin Franklin. The members of The Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons expressed growing concern with the conditions in American and European prisons. Dr. Benjamin Rush spoke on the Society’s goal, to see the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania set the international standard in prison design. He proposed a radical idea: to build a true penitentiary, a prison designed to create genuine regret and penitence in the criminal’s heart. The concept grew from Enlightenment thinking, but no government had successfully carried out such a program. It took the Society more than thirty years to convince the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to build the kind of prison it suggested: a revolutionary new building on farmland outside Philadelphia.

    Night Visit Standing on the curb outside baggage claim at LAX, I shifted the weight of my overnight bag on my shoulder, looking for my brother, Peter. His white Toyota nosed its way through the congested airport traffic, and there he was! Blond and blue, eyes bright and twinkling as usual, skin clear, his handsome face crossed with only the smallest lines betraying the fact that he was at the tail end of his forties. We hugged and laughed, smiling into one another's eyes. Parting, I slipped my bag to the pavement, we grasped hands and jumped in a small circle as we did when we were children. He, still, eternally boyish. As for me, well, I’ve always been loathe to give up my "Peter Pan complex". He's my Peter, and I one of his lost boys, even if I am his older sister. Or maybe I’m his Wendy-bird: forever pre-pubescent innocents, I followed him, and we ran away from Florida to California, our Never-land. My sister's eyes, anxious but furtive, searched for signs of failing. Peter had been living with AIDS for such a long time now. Thankfully, as usual, I found myself relieved by his apparent glowing health. While I’d grabbed the brass ring, blue chip law firm, partner, fancy schmancy - since shortly after graduating from law school himself, Peter has been on disability. I feel it’s incumbent upon me to share the wealth and, while appreciating the help, I know he could care less about the money.

Foreldrene var reindriftsamer og alt lå til rette for at lille Iver skulle gå i farens fotspor. Men våren 1940, da Iver var knapt åtte år gammel, fikk han foten ødelagt i en ulykke under kjøring med rein. Han ble behandlet på kysthospitalet i Vadsø og kom etterpå til Norges Samemisjons vanførehjem Bjerkely i Tromsø. Under oppholdet der fikk han lært å lese og skrive. Samtidig åpenbarte hans talent for billedkunst seg. 18 år gammel fikk Jåks plass på Den Samiske Folkehøgskolen i Karasjok. Etter to årskurs der fikk han i 1952 plass på Statens håndverks- og kunstskole i Oslo, hvor han var til 1955. Samme året ble Jåks opptatt ved Statens lærerskole i forming på Notodden, hvor han gjennomførte utdanningen. Etter avsluttet skolegang fikk han jobb som lærer i tegning og samisk kunsthåndverk ved Den Samiske Folkehøgskolen. Siden kom han til Vraa Højskole i Danmark. Her ble han blant annet kjent med den danske kunsthistorikeren Rudolf Broby Johansen, noe som kan ha vært en medvirkende årsak til at han ble opptatt som elev på Kunstakademiet i København i årene 1958–59. Etter at han ble ferdig på Kunstakademiet giftet han seg med Inger Nielsen fra Holbæk. Paret flyttet til Karasjok hvor de bodde mesteparten av livet. Jåks hadde adskillige illustrasjons- og utsmykkingsoppdrag. Han har designet sølv til Finnmarksbunaden, kirketekstiler, monumentalskulpturer i tre, samt et betongrelieff – Gudenes dans – utenfor de samiske samlinger i Karasjok.

The interest in the body has exploded among a number of fields of study and is a staple in visual culture.
