The Rebirth of Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera CARTELLATOURING_Carrozzeriaing:Layout 1 16-04-2008 9:46 Pagina 1 2008: the rebirth of Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera Villa d’Este, April 27th 2008 The fascinating coachbuilding heritage of the Bianchi Alderloni family has entered an inspired new chapter in automotive history. Hence the birth of the actual Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera S.r.l. in Rozzano, on the outskirts of Milan, thanks to the European holding company Zeta Europe, owner, among many, of Ruote Borrani, Carrozzeria Touring and Carrozzeria Granturismo trade marks. Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera S.r.l. consists of a team of very motivated designers, body engine- ers and master coachbuilders in combination with an international management team. At the occa- sion of the 2008 Villa d’Este Concours d’Elegance weekend, they are both thrilled and honoured to unveil two of their new creations, both as a world première. Both projects, although based on completely different briefings, represent contemporary interpreta- tions of very important traditional Carrozzeria Touring parameters: elegant sportiveness, quality of design, well-thought proportions and meticolous execution. The Bellagio Fastback Touring forms a tribute to Maserati successful Quattroporte model. The most luxury Italian saloon car of the post-War period has in fact been transformed in a sports fastback with rear door and large loading space, to offer the market a top level sportcar, never realized before. The Bellagio Fastback Touring has dimensions and performance identical to the saloon’s, it weighs only 50 kg more and doesn’t need particular homologations. It’s the ideal car for those who need a high standing and perfomance car also for leasure, able to accomodate four persons in maximum comfort and a series of sports equipments, luggages and whatever you need in your spare time. The Bellagio Fastback Touring can therefore be made to measure not only in colours, interiors and desi- red accessories, but also in tailor-made solutions for its owner: spaces for shotguns, ski, golf and all big objects in general. The other prototype launched by Touring Superleggera at Villa d’Este is the sports berlinetta A8GCS Berlinetta Touring, realized on the Maserati Coupé GranSport mechanics. With this project, Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera illustrates an ambitious in-depth research and development pro- gram for both advanced automotive design, as well as for a redefinition of the Superleggera concept according to modern standards. Compact, light and thoroughly aerodynamically tested, the A8GCS Berlinetta Touring bodywork is designed to wrap itself around a newly Touring developed aluminium chassis and Maserati mechanical parts in an optimal and tempting way. The start of the 21st century is witnessing a true renaissance of special automotive coachbuilding and custom automotive design. The factor of personal expression is still of growing importance. The com- plexity of modern cars seems contradictory to the profession of special coachbuilders. The spectrum of possibilities is however fascinating and broad. It forms a challenge for new generations of automotive designers and engineers. Modern technologies and materials, in combination with traditional skills and know-how, open new windows for tailor-made high quality products. Laptops and hammers, software and steel, laser and rulers: this is the workfloor of Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera for 2008.

My son Matthew and I with my first Aston Martin There is an aura about Aston Martin, a heritage far beyond simple statistics. Winning at Le Mans, victory in the World Sportscar Championship, the Zagatos and Royal patronage would be enough for any car manufacturer. Aston Martin goes beyond that – every car has its character and every owner, real pride in his or her car. Any market place has pitfalls for the unwary and opportunities for the unscrupulous. What I have tried to produce is an overview of Aston Martin cars that can act as an introduction to the marque. It is my view, coloured by my experiences and the use of my library of Aston Martin books as a reference.

  • Auto Body Construction History and Technique
www.EnjoyClassicCars.com Auto Body Construction History and Technique Overview This discussion will focus on four major types of body construction: Body on frame (wood sub-structure and pressed steel sub-structure Body as frame (monocoque or unibody) Hybrids Tubular (superleggera) History In the decade before the Great Depression a revolution in automobile body con- struction took place. Sheet steel or aluminum, sometimes fabric, clad over an ash- wood frame was still the popular technique of constructing tourer bodies. Although this labor-intensive style of body construction persisted with some sports cars, no- tably MG to 1955 and Morgan to this day, the manufacture of pressed steel outer panels and inner structure became much more cost effective for high volume pro- duction, which justifies the great investment in large stamping dies and presses. The term “saloon” was associated with this all-metal body construction technique. Only a fabric roof insert persisted on many closed body styles up to WWII. In 1913, the Dodge brothers hired Edward G. Budd to adapt for automobiles his all-metal pressed steel building process developed for railway cars. Investment in tooling and machinery offset, then decreased the investment in time and skilled labor, while increasing dimensional consistency and parts interchangeability. An additional benefit was that the body stylist would no longer be as constrained by the angularity required with wood-frame body construction. In 1919 the all-steel saloon went into production and contributed to Dodge selling their millionth car in 1923. In 1927 William Morris introduced Budd’s automotive body fabrication technology in England.

  • Some Interesting Facts About Borrani Wheels for You
Some interesting facts about Borrani Wheels for you. Carlo Borrani was actually born in Calfornia but started up a new company with a partner in Milan using the patented Rudge-Whitworth design of a tapered splined hub to which a tapered wheel's centre could swiftly be fitted and locked into position by means of a single wheel nut or a knockoff. As you know, one uses a suitable hammer to tighten or loosen the knock-off. Over the years Borrani made spoke wheels for bicycles, motorcycles and cars. Magnesium alloy wheels were added to their portfolio to remain competitive. During the dictatorship of Mussolini, it was decreed that all names of companies bearing an English name be purged and the company obliged giving the name: Ruota Borrani - Milano. (Ruota is Italian for wheel). For a brief spell the company was required to make aircraft wheels, shock absorbers, brakes and fuel pumps during the war up to the time they signed the Armistice with the Allies in 1943. Borrani built up an impressive customer base. Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Ford. Interestingly, Carlo never drove a car, preferring to be chauffeured. I wonder if there any Triumphs out there kitted out with Borrani wheels? Well, in fact you can buy them, I have searched their website and for a set of four TR6 wire wheels, expect to pay 6604.80 Pound plus 835.20 for a set of four spinners!!! In case you were wondering about the red hand on the badge, that is a salute to Rudge-Whitworth's origins; look out for the headstock on one of their early bicycles and the chain ring for that matter - The Red Hand of Ulster, Northern Ireland.
