With an increasing interest in planting Australian native trees, there is a need to compile the available results of research field trials and interpret them for use in farm forestry and hardwood plantation forestry. The National Farm Forestry Silviculture project was devised to address this need, with agreement to collaborate from state forestry research institutions throughout Australia. This bibliography is one part of the project. The project targets silviculture of Australian native tree species, especially eucalypts. For the purposes of this project, silviculture is defined as field management of trees, that is, after the nursery stock and site have been chosen. The project presents data from research trials in plantations and other farm forestry plantings with the potential to be grown for wood and other production values. Although several literature reviews have included reference to eucalypt field silviculture, there has been no effort to compile a comprehensive bibliography of hardwood silviculture research. The large number of eucalypt species, the wide range of sites, and the recent nature of hardwood plantation research, mean that research effort has been somewhat broad-ranging. A bibliography which compiles this literature is of use to researchers in plantation silviculture and also as a reference for extension officers in farm forestry, particularly those who are remote from forestry libraries and research centres. With a few exceptions, the bibliography does not include research into species and provenance selection, and the effects of site. This is or has been compiled and/or reviewed by other recent projects on hardwoods (Eucalyptus, Acacia, and Grevillea). Research results from decades of growing Pinus species in plantation in Australia are also generally not included; there are already several reviews of genotype selection and silviculture of Pinus species in plantation. The bibliography includes keywords for each citation - these are also indexed at the back of the report. This project was funded by the Farm Forestry Program (Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries Australia) and coordinated by RIRDC under the Joint Venture Agroforestry Program (JVAP). The JVAP is supported by three R&D Corporations — Rural Industries, Land & Water Australia and Forest and Wood Products. These Corporations are funded principally by the Federal Government. This report, a new addition to RIRDC’s diverse range of over 700 research publications, forms part of our Agroforestry and Farm Forestry R&D program, which aims to integrate sustainable and productive agroforestry within Australian farming systems. I also thank the individual researchers and institutions who provided publication lists, both general, and of their own work. The library staff at QFRI Gympie and DPI Forestry head office assisted with obtaining interlibrary loans, photocopying and tracking down obscure or incomplete citations – a special thank you to Lee Tonkin, Natasha Waters and Antonia Antoniou. Bernie West and Kate Murray typed some references into the SILVDAT database, from which this bibliography was derived. Trevor Wardill assisted with typing keywords, photocopying and proof-reading. Research organisations/individuals who provided general publication lists or lists of their personal work were: • Kelvin Montagu (State Forests of New South Wales) • Michael Duncan, Jim Morris, Nick Collett (Centre for Forest Tree Technology) • Mark Podbercek (QFRI) • Doug Walsh (ANU) • Ryde James provided a list of theses from Department of Forestry, Australian National University • Robyn Cromer, Brian Myers, Mike Webb (CSIRO) • Richard Harper, Richard Moore, Peter Ritson, and CALM Library (Conservation and Land Management (CALM), Como and Busselton, Western Australia) • Justine Edwards (Department of Botany, University of Western Australia) • Prof. John Fox (Curtin University) • John Koch (ALCOA, Western Australia) • Chris Beadle, Caroline Mohammed, Clare McArthur (CRC for Sustainable Production Forestry) • Annual reports 1994-2000, Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Production Forestry • web site, RIRDC - List of full research reports 2000 (http://www.rirdc.gov.au/reports/Index.htm) • web site, Institute of Foresters Australia (http://www.ifa.unimelb.edu.au/forestryabstracts) • list of Australian references from the BRS brief to Minister for Forestry and Conservation on Fertilisers in Forestry • web site, Queensland Forestry Research Institute Abbreviations ACIAR Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research ATSC Australian Tree Seed Centre (CSIRO) CAI current annual increment CIFOR Centre for International Forest Research CRCTREM Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Rainforest Ecology and Management CRRP Community Rainforest Rehabilitation Program CSIRO Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation FWPRDC Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Corporation IUFRO International Union of Forest Research Organisations LAI leaf area index LWRRDC Land and Water Resources Research and Development Corporation MAI mean annual increment PAI periodic annual increment QFRI Queensland Forestry Research Institute subsp. subspecies iv Contents Foreword iii Acknowledgements iv Abbreviations iv 1. Introduction 1.1 The National Farm Forestry Silviculture project The National Farm Forestry Silviculture project was devised to address the information needs of silviculture researchers and farm foresters. It is funded under the Farm Forestry Program (AFFA) and coordinated by Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) under the Joint Venture Agroforestry Program (project No. DAQ-222A). The four-year project is managed by Dr Rosemary Lott, Queensland Forestry Research Institute, with collaborators in government forest research agencies from all states. The project targets silvicultural experiments on native species in plantation and species grown in farm forestry situations (e.g. wide-spaced trees, low rainfall pine). There will be several outputs from the project: i) this bibliography; ii) a database and report listing past and current silvicultural experiments; iii) a review of Australian silvicultural research in hardwood plantations and farm forestry, to identify future research needs; iv) protocols for research trial design, data collection and presentation, to encourage more comparability between farm forestry and research trials in the future. A national database (SILVDAT) has been developed – it is designed for storing information describing published and unpublished trials on plantation silviculture of Australian native tree species, plus some data from agroforestry trials including exotic pine in low rainfall areas. Species included are those used in industrial plantation situations, as well as ‘non-traditional’ species. Both past and current research experiments
