RARE NATIVE ANIMALS OF RHODE ISLAND Revised: March, 2006 ABOUT THIS LIST The list is divided by vertebrates and invertebrates and is arranged taxonomically according to the recognized authority cited before each group. Appropriate synonomy is included where names have changed since publication of the cited authority. The Natural Heritage Program's Rare Native Plants of Rhode Island includes an estimate of the number of "extant populations" for each listed plant species, a figure which has been helpful in assessing the health of each species. Because animals are mobile, some exhibiting annual long-distance migrations, it is not possible to derive a population index that can be applied to all animal groups. The status assigned to each species (see definitions below) provides some indication of its range, relative abundance, and vulnerability to decline. More specific and pertinent data is available from the Natural Heritage Program, the Rhode Island Endangered Species Program, and the Rhode Island Natural History Survey. STATUS. The status of each species is designated by letter codes as defined: (FE) Federally Endangered (7 species currently listed) (FT) Federally Threatened (2 species currently listed) (SE) State Endangered Native species in imminent danger of extirpation from Rhode Island. These taxa may meet one or more of the following criteria: 1. Formerly considered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for Federal listing as endangered or threatened. 2. Known from an estimated 1-2 total populations in the state. 3. Apparently globally rare or threatened; estimated at 100 or fewer populations range-wide. Animals listed as State Endangered are protected under the provisions of the Rhode Island State Endangered Species Act, Title 20 of the General Laws of the State of Rhode Island. -

Edwards, 1865), the broad-winged skipper, were collected in Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba (50.00 N; 95.32 W) near Red Rock Lake in 2003 – 2006. Eight of the broad-winged skippers were female and seven were male. There has been only one other confirmed collection of a female specimen, in 1987, in Manitoba. This is the northern-most distribution of this skipper to date. The broad-winged skipper breeds locally in isolated wet-lands of southeastern Manitoba, flying from late June to early August, but principally in the latter part of July. INTRODUCTION Poanes viator (W. H. Edwards, 1865), the broad-winged skipper, is a large, dark brown and orange skipper. It has an inland range from Massachusetts, southern Ontario, Min- nesota, and Nebraska, south to Alabama and Texas (Klots 1951). In Canada, it is found throughout southern Ontario, north to Renfrew County, and in southwestern Québec as far as Sorel. Two isolated records are reported outside this range, one from Lake of the Woods, Ontario and one in the Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba. (Layberry et al.1998). Klots (1951) and Brock and Kaufman (2003) identified two populations; an inland freshwater marsh population, which is only found in Canada, and the coastal population, found in salt water marshes from the eastern United States to Texas. -

PREFACE Since 1933 we have devoted practically all our leisure time to an intensive study of the butterflies of Virginia. We have regularly spent our annual leave in the State, stopping at various places from which each day we drove out into the surrounding country. In addition to prolonged visits of 2 weeks or more to various towns and cities, we spent many week ends in particularly interesting localities. We have visited all the 100 counties in the State at least twice, most of them many times, and our personal records are from more than 800 locali- ties. We have paid special attention to the Coastal Plain, particularly the great swamps in Nansemond, Norfolk, and Princess Anne Counties, and to the western mountains. Virginia is so large and so diversified that it would have been im- possible for us, without assistance, to have made more than a super- ficial and unsatisfactory study of the local butterflies. -
Notes on Virginia Butterflies, with Two New State Records!

STRALEY Botany Department, POlter Hall, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio 45701 In 1951 Austin and Leila Clark published The Butterflies of Virginia. This work crowned 20 years of avid collecting and observation in the Old Dominion by the Clarks and their colleagues, and brought together all the records and knowledge about the Virginia butterfly fauna up to that time. According to the nomenclature used by the Clarks, a total of 154 species and subspecies (144 species) was recorded as having been collected in Virginia. Keys, diagnostic features, range, variation, occurrence, season, and interesting discussions were given for the butter flies and a complete bibliography of literature on Virginia butterflies rounded out the work. Since the appearance of Clark & Clark (1951) very little has been published to add to our knowledge of the Virginia butterfly fauna. Covell ( 1962) added Satyrium kingi (Klots & Clench) to the State list and Straley (1969) recorded Thymelicus lineola (Ochsenheimer) for the first time from the State. Nomenclature and arrangement of species were brought into line with dos Passos (1964), the present standard for North American Rhopalocera classification, by Covell (1967). The latter list also included the first record of Megathymus yuccae (Boisduval & Le Conte) for Virginia. In this paper we include two more first records for the State-Problema bulenta (Boisduval & Le Conte) and Satyrium caryaevorus (McDun nough). In accordance with the dos Passos arrangement, plus recent changes in the nomenclature of Lethe, 158 species and subspecies (149 species) of butterflies are now known to have been taken in Virginia. -

Chapter 4. Virginia’s Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain Figure 4.1. The Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain ecoregion. 4.1. Introduction 4.1.1. Description The Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain (Coastal Plain, Figure 4.1) corresponds to what other classification systems call the Coastal Plain (Table 4.1). The terrain is mostly flat. This province is bounded by the Southern Appalachian Piedmont to the west and the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean to the east. The soils of the Coastal Plain are predominantly deep, moist Aquults and Aqualfs (McNab and Avers 1994). Rainfall in the region averages 110cm per year, and the average temperature ranges from 13 to 14°C (McNab and Avers 1994). The growing season generally lasts between 185 and 259 days (shortest in the northern portion, longest in the City of Virginia Beach, Woodward and Hoffman 1991). Forest cover is mostly loblolly pine- hardwood (McNab and Avers 1994), except the southernmost portion, which is mainly southeastern evergreen (longleaf and loblolly pine, Woodward and Hoffman 1991). Most streams are small to intermediate in size and have very low flow rates (McNab and Avers 1994). Table 4.1.
