Howdy Ags! 2019 was another wonderful year for the Highland Lakes A&M Club! We once again made good on our promise to honor those Aggies who’ve gone before us and to spread the Aggie Spirit amongst our neighbors and the next generation. Take a look below at how your Club is Fostering Aggie Spirit in the Hill Country. Enjoy the newsletter and thank you for another successful year! Howdy! My name is Mike Linam, and it’s my honor to again serve as President of the Highland Lakes A&M Club for 2020. Over the past year, our local Aggies have gathered together for Aggie Muster, several Aggie Social Happy Hours, the Clemson Tailgate Party and the Holiday Party!

Our Muster Speaker for 2019 was Barry Hendler ‘71. Barry is the President and CEO of American Lumber Inc. and was a recipient of the 2006 AGGIE 100 Award. Muster gave us an opportunity to reconnect to our Aggie roots and each other as we honored our Aggie brethren who’ve passed on before us. We also awarded five scholarships of $5,000 each to another impressive group of future Aggies. In addition, a rare Sixth Scholarship of $5,000 was also awarded this year in honor of R.M. Burnam, Sr. Class of ‘23. This scholarship was sponsored by Mr. Burnam’s children: Bobby Burnam, Alice Johnson and Sam Burnam ’65.

Of note, we increased the scholarship amount from $3,000 up to $5,000 per student in 2019. That’s a significant increase! You can help us ensure we’re able to continue helping these aspiring Aggies by becoming an Aggie Spirit Sponsor. See Page 6 to learn more about it and check out a Tax Smart Gifting Strategy some of you might employ for Qualified Charitable Distributions on Page 7 to get a little more mileage out of your gifting dollars.

Something new we added this year were monthly Aggie Socials! These happy hours have been a great way for Aggies to meet each other outside the typical Club events and get to know each other better. Take a look at our 2020 Social Calendar on Page 4 to see which events you may want to add to your calendar.

Speaking of events, the 2020 Aggie Classic Golf Tournament is just around the corner! Take a look at Page 9 for details and registration. It’s time to form your teams and begin thinking about how you can hit a Hole-in One! Why? Because Johnson Sewell - Lincoln will be sending the winner home with a Brand New Lincoln Aviator! Yes, a brand new car! Good luck players.

We as a Board thank you for your participation and support and hope you will help the Club by renewing your Annual $30 membership and consider becoming a Spirit Sponsor and/or Corporate/Golf Tournament Sponsor - See Page 8. Your generosity goes a long way in spreading Aggie Spirit in the Hill Country.

Finally, I want to thank Zach Vercher ‘11 & Bailey Vercher ‘12 for their Board Service last year and Whitney Clement ‘96 for her many years of dedicated service on the board as well. We also want to welcome Bailey Pippenger ‘18 to the board for 2020. She’s already making a big impact!

I’m looking forward to another great year! We have Muster and the Aggie Classic Golf Tournament just around the corner in April! Hope to see you there! Gig’em,

Page 5 SPIRIT SPONSOR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Each year, the Highland Lakes A&M Foundation awards up to five scholarships to deserving young men and women who have been accepted to Texas A&M. With the ever increasing costs of higher education, scholarship programs such as this one truly make an impact on the lives of these young people.

To ensure this great tradition of awarding scholarships continues each year, we’ve established our Spirit Sponsor Program. Our Spirit Sponsors donate annually to the Foundation Scholarship Fund. Please consider making an annual contribution to this program.

Page 6 $$$ Tax Smart Giving $$$ Qualified Charitable Donations for 2020

Who should consider making a Qualified Charitable Donation?

Those who would like to donate to the Highland Lakes A&M Foundation Scholarship Fund as a Spirit Sponsor for 2020, would like to use pre-tax dollars for the donation, and are at least 70 ½ yrs old. What is a QCD?

A (QCD) or Qualified Charitable Distribution, is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. The Highland Lakes A&M Foundation scholarship fund is such a qualifying 501(c)(3) eligible charity.

QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met.

In addition to the benefits of giving to charity, a QCD excludes the amount donated from taxable income, which is unlike regular withdrawals from an IRA. Keeping your taxable income lower may reduce the impact to certain tax credits and deductions, including Social Security and Medicare.

Also, QCDs don't require that you itemize, which due to the recent tax law changes, means you may decide to take advantage of the higher standard deduction, but still use a QCD for charitable giving. Can I make a QCD?

While many IRAs are eligible for QCDs—Traditional, Rollover, Inherited, SEP (inactive plans only), and SIMPLE (inactive plans only) —there are requirements:

● You must be 70½ or older to be eligible to make a QCD. This age did not change with the recent passing of the Secure Act.

● For a QCD to count towards your current year's RMD, the funds must come out of your IRA by your RMD deadline, generally December 31.

● Any amount donated above your RMD does not count toward satisfying a future year's RMD.

● Funds distributed directly to you, the IRA owner, and which you then give to charity do not qualify as a QCD.

● Please consult your tax professional/CPA to ensure a QCD is right for you. Have additional questions on this topic?

● Contact: Mike Linam - Club President 830-693-2504 [email protected]

Page 7 CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM

Part of our mission as an organization is to bring local Aggies together at annual events such as Aggie Muster, Coach’s night and various other events. Corporate Sponsorships allow us to put on quality events that are fun to attend. These sponsors ensure that we have the funds needed to cover the additional operating costs of the club beyond what membership dues and event entry fees cover.

In years where we have enough funds on hand to cover the events for the club for the next year, we will devote the funds from Corp Sponsors directly to the scholarship foundation to help replenish the scholarship fund. 2020 will be such a year and consequently, your Corporate Sponsor donations will be tax deductible for the 2020 tax year.

Become a 2020 Corporate Sponsor Today! You don’t have to be a business owner to be a corporate sponsor. However, if you own a business, this is a great way to support the Club and promote your business to local Aggies.

What’s included in the Corporate Sponsorship package? · Your Logo on every page of the Club/Foundation Website (www.highlandlakesaggies.com) · Recognition in the Club Newsletter · Your Logo featured as a Table Centerpiece at all Club Events · Your Logo or Your Name prominently displayed on the Corp Sponsor Banner at all Club Events Your Logo displayed on a Hole Sign and the Corp Sponsor Banner at the 2020 Golf Tournament

To make your 2020 Corporate Sponsorship donation of $300, please use the form on the back of this newsletter or pay online at www.highlandlakesaggies.com. If you have additional questions about the program, please contact Mike Linam at [email protected] or 830-693-2504.
