The Texas Master Naturalist™ program works to address this need by developing local corps of “master volunteers” to provide service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within the volunteers’ own communities. Communities and organizations across the state rely on these skilled volunteers for implementing youth outreach programs; for operating parks, nature centers, and natural areas; and for providing leadership in local natural resource conserva­ tion efforts. This increase in population across the state will affect counties and communities that are located within the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). The WUI is described as the area where structures and other human improvements meet and intermingle with undeveloped wildland or vegetative fuels. Population growth within the WUI substantially increases the risk from wildfire. Seventy nine percent of wildfires in Texas occur within two miles of a community. That means 79 percent of Texas wildfires pose a threat to life and property. A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is a plan developed by a community in an area at risk from wildfire. The CWPP is a collaborative product involving interested parties, local government, local firefighting agencies, the state agency that oversees forest management, and federal land management agencies, if present.

    Hill Country Conservation: A Network and Narrative for Large-scale Collaborative Conservation A Report to the Cynthia and George Mitchell Foundation Research and Report by: R. Patrick Bixler, PhD Ashley Noel Lovell, PhD 1 Executive Summary From April 2015-May 2016, we have been involved in a joint research and practitioner-based effort to understand the network and the narrative that shapes Hill Country conservation opportunities and outcomes. We have collected and analyzed over 40 hours of interview data and developed an extensive database of information on the organizations and agencies that work to make the Hill Country a socially and ecologically thriving landscape. Through these efforts, we believe that opportunities exist to improve coordination of activities, leverage and pool resources, increase and use social capital, enhance conflict management (prevention, reduction, resolution), and im- prove knowledge management (including generation, trans- lation, and diffusion). The report that follows summarizes these efforts and offers insights and recommendations based on our analysis. The following are some key take-aways: 1. The organizations and agencies working in the Hill Coun- try are many and diverse. The Hill Country is a special place to many people, it may come as no suprise that there is an abundace of organizations working on conservation issues in the region. Our survey identified 160 organizations and agen- cies (which is not exhaustive) that represent ten different or- ganizational categories, examples include community-based organizations (23% of the network), state non-governmental organizations (15% of the network), and land trusts (5% of the network). Some organizations are focused on specific places, others are focused on connecting with specific constituencies, while still others work on regional or state policy.

    TEXAS HIGHLAND LAKES UNIT NEWSLETTER January 15, 2017 - March 15, 2017 Prepared by Debbie Trimble, Correspon din g Secretary Visit THLU.org President's Message If you are reading this message then you have made it through the holidays, survived the entrance into 2017, and maybe are considering how many trips you will take on with your Airstream! Debbie and I had a very relaxing Christmas Day with my mom at my sisters home in Carrollton. Mom is 96 and still going strong. I hope to be able to bring her to one of our rallies this year. Our next rally at Brazos Bend State Park is fast approaching. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that the weather is significantly better than what we had to deal with on Friday and Saturday of the Christmas rally! I think we all had a good time and good food. We also raised a nice sum of money for the Shriner's Hospital Galveston, Ronald McDonald House Galveston, and the Salvation Army of Austin. These were the charity groups that were voted on at the November business meeting. Marty is in the process of getting the funds to these organizations. Thank you for opening up your hearts and wallets and helping out these folks. A special thanks to Jim Latham for being the auctioneer once again. You do a fantastic job! I want to mention another very important upcoming event. The Region 9 rally begins on March 20th. Our past President Grady Ferry and wife Keith are spearheading this rally and they need our help and participation.
