The Quest for Natural Biogeographic Regions
Chapter 3 Carving up Australasia: the quest for natural biogeographic regions Most systematists will squirm at inferences derived from a non-monophyletic or artificial taxon. The importance of monophyly is critical to understanding the natural world and drawing inferences about past processes and events. Since the early 19th century, plant and animal geographers have also been concerned about correctly identifying natural areas. Plant geographer and taxonomist Augustin de Candolle tried to propose natural laws when proposing natural areas and failed. Humboldt abandoned natural classification and assigned vegetable forms, thereby creating a useful classification, which was unfortunately artificial. For early 19th century Australasian biogeographers, the concept of cladistic biogeography and area monophyly was decades away, while the importance of finding natural areas was immediate. Natural areas allowed the biogeographer to make inferences about the biotic evolution of a region such as Australia or New Zealand. Discovering the relationships between natural areas would allow for better inferences about dispersal pathways and evolutionary connections between continental floras and faunas, rather than proposing ephemeral land-bridges or sunken continents. Still, after 150 years of searching, biogeographers puzzle over the natural regions of Australasia. Why natural regions? As in biological systematics, artificial taxa represent a pastiche of distantly related taxa (think of the term ‘insectivores’, which would include all insect eating animals, such as funnel-web spiders, bee-eaters and echidnas). Artificial taxa are more closely related to other taxa than they are to themselves. The same is true for biogeography – artificial areas, such as ‘Australia’, are composites that are more closely related to other areas than they are to themselves. -

Abstract: This essay examines how Carey displays the multiple fakeries of fiction in My Life as a Fake. It notes the multiple inter-textual references to the Ern Malley hoax and the gothic horror of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. It examines the three unreliable narrating voices, the uneven characterisation of Christopher Chubb, and the magic realism seeking to animate Bob McCorkle and his present/absent book My Life as a Fake. It argues that the dazzling display of meta-fictional complexity, much celebrated by reviewers, contributes to the book’s failure to create engaging characters and a credible narrative. Its spectacular exposure of the multiple fakeries involved in telling the stories of fictional characters is compelling, but it is less persuasive in rendering those fictional characters credible and sympathetic. The first of Carey’s books to be published by Random House, it did not emulate the spectacular success of True History of the Kelly Gang. Initially uncertain of how to respond, some reviewers devoted more space to re-telling the Ern Malley story than to the book itself, which understandably frustrated the author (“Carey’s take on snub?” 1). -

It is demonstrated here that severe weather events, such as drought, floods, storms, extreme cold and bushfires, have had a significant impact on that history. Drought affected farming operations, town water supplies, mining and industry, and later hydro-electric power generation. Floods and storms disrupted transport and communication networks and damaged property in towns and in the country. Bushfires also periodically wrought widespread property damage. An environmental history approach is employed to explore the dominant images and perceptions of Tasmania‟s climate, the impacts of severe weather events on the population, the responses made to them, and how these changed over time from 1803 to the 1960s. -

During a broad study of the biology of the freshwater in rhe Tasmanian genus fWO distinct forms of Astacopsis franklinii were recognised. These "forms" were found to diffcr in terms of their general morphology and distribution. As a result, the taxonomy of Astacopsis has been revised to re-establish the three species originally described by Ellen Clark. Astacopsis franklinii Gray has been divided into fWO separate species, the eastern Astacopsis franklinti and the western Astacopsis tricorn is, while the status ofArtacopsis gouldi remains unaltered. On this long isolated continent, the naming of several monotypic genera and a plethora of species have clouded both the phylogenetical and biogeographical relation- ships with other thiarids, in particular in Southeast Asia, thus hampering insight into the evolution of Australian taxa and their natural history. Based on own collections during five expeditions to various regions in Australia between 2002 and 2007, the study of rele- vant type material and the comparison with (mostly shell) material from major Australian museum collections, we describe and document here the morphology (of adults and juve- niles) and radulae of all relevant thiarid taxa, discussing the taxonomical implications and nomenclatural consequences. Presenting comprehensive compilations of the occurrences for all Australian thiarid species, we document their geographical distribution (based on over 900 records) with references ranging from continent-wide to drainage-based pat- terns. We morphologically identify a total of eleven distinct species (also corroborated as distinct clades by molecular genetic data, to be reported elsewhere), of which six species are endemic to Australia, viz.
