14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time : July 3, 201 6 Reflection on Sunday’s Scripture Readings: What’s the Word? CARRYING THE CROSS "May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Gal 6:14) . Central to our faith and our practice of religion is the choice to identify with the poor and crucified Christ. Christ's death on the cross fulfilled three purposes: It put to death the very concept of death as the ultimate obstacle to living. It gave positive meaning to the transforming and redemptive experience of dying. And it ushers in a new and eternal covenant. Jesus Christ accomplished this purpose in two ways: He conquered death and sin for all of humanity by his own death and resurrection, and he gave us the example of how we must share his redemptive activity by our own identification with the crucified Christ. So carrying the cross means that we choose to "put to death" (i.e., work to eliminate or choose to change) those attitudes and behaviors which obstruct life and growth and health. Carrying the cross, likewise, is the decision to transform the negative events of life into positive experiences of the grace of God. We don't just put up with nonsense, nor The Lord appointed seventyseventy----twotwo others… endure suffering, nor wallow in pity, nor get snagged into the gloomy side of life, but we work as hard as we can to make every experience of "death" a new resurrection for us. Carrying the cross is also the willingness to embrace penitential practices to symbolize our inner spirit of self- giving, show our solidarity and compassion with those who Franciscan Sisters of Chicago are suffering, and to demonstrate that we are completely alive 11400 Theresa Drive for God.
