Global Directory of Catholic Seminaries Part V: South America Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate Georgetown University Washington, D.C. Global Directory of Catholic Seminaries Part V: South America January 2017 Michal J. Kramarek, Ph.D. Fr. Thomas P. Gaunt, S.J., Ph.D. Santiago Sordo-Palacios Part V: South America Number of Seminary Records for South America in the Directory of Seminaries by Country This part of the Directory of Catholic Seminaries describes seminaries in South America. The map above illustrates the number of seminary records in the Directory by country. Overall, the Directory includes 764 seminary records for South America. Among countries in this world region, the Directory includes the highest number of seminary records for Brazil (303 seminaries), Colombia (152 seminaries), and Peru (107 seminaries). 2 Comparison between the Number of Seminaries in the Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae (ASE) and Its Equivalent in the Directory of Catholic Seminaries (DCS) in South America by Country1 Number of seminaries in ASE Number of seminaries in DCS Secondary Philosophy and Not ASE Secondary Philosophy and Not DCS schools theology classified total schools theology classified total Argentina 35 89 - 124 1 28 30 59 Bolivia 28 25 - 53 3 19 1 23 Brazil 460 550 - 1,010 14 154 135 303 Chile 11 59 - 70 0 25 6 31 Colombia 100 177 - 277 3 103 46 152 Ecuador 30 43 - 73 0 34 16 50 Falkland 0 0 - 0 0 0 0 0 Islands French Guiana 0 0 - 0 0 0 0 0 Guyana 0 0 - 0 0 0 0 0 Paraguay 26 23 - 49 1 5 1 7 Peru 62 90 - 152 7 80 20 107 Suriname 0 2 - 2 0 0 0 0 Uruguay 4 3 - 7 0 3 0 3 Venezuela 29 64 - 93 2 17 2 21 South America 785 1,125 0 1,910 31 468 257 756 The table above attempts to estimate how complete the Directory is by comparing the number of seminaries listed in the Segreteria di Stato Vaticano's (2013) Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae with the number of open seminaries included in this Directory. According to Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae countries with the highest number of seminaries in South America are: Brazil (1,010 seminaries), Colombia (277 seminaries), and Peru (152 seminaries). Countries with the fewest number of seminaries are: Suriname (two seminaries) and Uruguay (seven seminaries). The Directory contains information on 756 seminaries in South America. This number includes 31 secondary schools, 468 philosophy and theology seminaries, and 257 seminaries for which there is not sufficient information to classify them in one of the two groups. 1 The numbers for ASE were derived from the 2013 edition. The numbers for DCS in the table here were calculated for comparison to the numbers from ASE. The numbers of “seminaries” for DCS in the table here are not equal to the number of “seminary records” in DCS for two reasons. First, one seminary record may, for example, describe a seminary which is classified as “seminary” and “residence” or “center for the diocesan clergy” and “center for the religious clergy” as understood by ASE and treated by ASE as separate seminaries. Second, DCS includes information about both open and closed seminaries. 3 Overall, the number of seminaries in the Directory amounts to 40 percent of the seminaries accounted for in the Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae. The discrepancies between Annuarium Statisticum Ecclesiae and the Directory should be given due consideration when using the Directory. For more detailed description of the methodology used in preparing the Directory please see Part I. 4 Contents Argentina ..................................................................................................................................... 6 Bolivia ....................................................................................................................................... 36 Brazil ......................................................................................................................................... 49 Chile ........................................................................................................................................ 207 Colombia ................................................................................................................................. 225 Ecuador.................................................................................................................................... 302 Paraguay .................................................................................................................................. 328 Peru.......................................................................................................................................... 332 Uruguay ................................................................................................................................... 388 Venezuela ................................................................................................................................ 391 5 Argentina Blessed Cura Brochero in Argentina Contact information: Rector: Pbro. APRIL 12, 1937 PRINTED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BY FIELD MUSEUM PRESS v.13 EDITOR'S NOTE As a matter of convenience, the present part of the "Catalogue of the Birds of the Americas" is confined to the treatment of the family Icteridae. As prepared by the author, the manuscript cover- ing this family was included with that of the Fringillidae, and only a single introduction was written. In this, he states that "the families treated are fairly circumscribed, but their further classification offers unusual difficulties. In the case of the Troupials, the author is bound to agree with the late Robert Ridgway's view that splitting into subfamilies serves no practical purpose, since no fast lines can be drawn between the minor groups proposed by certain systematists." Various museums and individuals, as heretofore, have cooperated in the preparation of this part by supplying material and information.

  • Part III - Administrative, Procedural, and Miscellaneous
Part III - Administrative, Procedural, and Miscellaneous Determination of Housing Cost Amounts Eligible for Exclusion or Deduction for 2010 Notice 2010-27 SECTION 1. PURPOSE This notice provides adjustments to the limitation on housing expenses for purposes of section 911 of the Internal Revenue Code (Code) for specific locations for 2010. These adjustments are made on the basis of geographic differences in housing costs relative to housing costs in the United States. SECTION 2. BACKGROUND Section 911(a) of the Code allows a qualified individual to elect to exclude from gross income the foreign earned income and housing cost amount of such individual. Section 911(c)(1) defines the term “housing cost amount” as an amount equal to the excess of (A) the housing expenses of an individual for the taxable year to the extent such expenses do not exceed the amount determined under section 911(c)(2), over (B) 16 percent of the exclusion amount (computed on a daily basis) in effect under section 911(b)(2)(D) for the calendar year in which such taxable year begins ($250.68 per day for 2010, or $91,500 for the full year), multiplied by the number of days of that taxable year within the applicable period described in section 911(d)(1). The applicable period is the period during which the individual meets the tax home requirement of section 911(d)(1) and either the bona fide residence requirement of section 911(d)(1)(A) or the physical presence requirement of section 911(d)(1)(B). Assuming that the entire taxable year of a qualified individual is within the applicable period, the section 911(c)(1)(B) amount for 2010 is $14,640 ($91,500 x .16).

  • Theological Basis and Canonical Implications of Involvement of Religious in the Local Church
1 Theological basis and Canonical Implications of Involvement of Religious in the Local Church 1. Introduction There are two states in the church – the clergy and the laity. The two groups of persons are referred to as hierarchical/institutional and charismatic/prophetic. There are different categories of people in the church – the clergy, the consecrated people and the laity. The three categories are to work in collaboration with each other in order to evangelise and build the Body of Christ. The consecrated persons/religious are in the vanguard of the mission of the church. They are encouraged to be enterprising in their initiatives and undertakings in keeping with the charismatic and prophetic nature of religious life. But they depend on the hierarchical/institutional church for discernment and approval of their charism and apostolate. Working together does cause some conflict and tensions. Hence a proper understanding of these two groups along with the theological basis of consecrated life, their roles and dependence (canonical implications), will help to clarify the relationships and bring about more effectiveness in ministry. If they work in partnership, with dialogue and mutual consultation, the church will benefit and the kingdom that Christ inaugurated will be furthered. 2. Brief History of Consecrated life How did consecrated life begin? What were its essentials? What is its present form? What was the role of the hierarchy in approving it? In order to seek an answer to these questions, we will have to look into a brief history of consecrated life. In early Christian communities there were virgins, widows and ascetics who lived a life distinguished from the ordinary life by its leaning to perfection, continence and sometimes the renunciation of riches.
