Extent: 66 cubic ft. (165 legal-size Hollinger boxes) Physical Description: Paper Location: MSA Stacks ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION Alternative Formats: Microfilm (S95-S123) of the Pardon Papers, 1837-1909, was made before additions, interfiles, and merging of the series. Most of the unmicrofilmed material will be found from 1854-1876 (pardon certificates and presidential pardons from an unprocessed box) and 1892-1909 (formerly restorations of citizenship). Also, stray records found in the Senior Reference Archivist’s office from 1836-1920 in Box 164 and interfiles (bulk 1860) from 2 Hollinger boxes found in the stacks, a portion of which are in Box 164. Access Restrictions: Applications or petitions listing the social security numbers of living people are confidential and must be provided to patrons in an alternative format. At the discretion of the Senior Reference Archivist, some records from the Board of Probation and Parole may be restricted per RSMo 549.500. Publication Restrictions: Copyright is in the public domain. PARDONS Processing Information: Processing done by various staff members and completed by Mary Kay Coker on October 30, 2007. Combined the series Pardon Papers and Restorations of Citizenship because the latter, especially in later years, contained a large proportion of pardons. The two series were split at 1910 but a later addition overlapped from 1892 to 1909 and these records were left in their respective boxes but listed chronologically in the finding aid. -

Farrell University of New Hampshire The broad and profound influence of classical rhetoric in early America can be observed in both the academic study of that ancient discipline, and in the practical approaches to persuasion adopted by orators and writers in the colonial period, and during the early republic. Classical theoretical treatises on rhetoric enjoyed wide authority both in college curricula and in popular treatments of the art. Classical orators were imitated as models of republican virtue and oratorical style. Indeed, virtually every dimension of the political life of early America bears the imprint of a classical conception of public discourse. -

John Quincy Adams Influence on Washington’s Farewell Address: A Critical Examination By Stephen Pierce In the last official letter to President Washington as Minister to the Netherlands in 1797, John Quincy Adams expressed his deepest thanks and reverence for the appointment that was bestowed upon him by the chief executive. As Washington finished his second and final term in office, Adams stated, “I shall always consider my personal obligations to you among the strongest motives to animate my industry and invigorate my exertions in the service of my country.” After his praise to Washington, he went into his admiration of the president’s 1796 Farewell Address. -

It can be found online for purchase at a variety of sites such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble) or purchased on the Miller School online bookstore. US Political & Geographic Map Assignment (below) th Chapters One and Two of Alan Brinkley’s American History 15 Edition (may be purchased on Miller School’s online bookstore). APUSH students are to purchase a copy of John F. Kennedy’s book Profiles in Courage 50th Anniversary Edition for the summer assignment. Students read the introduction, forward & eleven chapters, as well as the brief biography on Kennedy found at the end of the book. Below is a list of guided questions that will be useful for the assessment in the first week back to school. To assess reading comprehension and retention, students will answer an essay prompt and several multiple choice questions. Notes will not be allowed in class for this test. Students are also to complete the map assignments. There will be a map test in the first week of class. This helps provide students with geographic background knowledge required for the course. Finally, as APUSH requires extensive studying and reading, students should read chapters one and two of the textbook. This should give students an understanding of the work required for this course level. Weekly quizzes on textbook chapters are standard in APUSH. John F. John Quincy Adams Biographical Sketch John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) was the sixth president of the United States from 1825-1829. He had a long and fruitful career in public service, including positions such as American statesman and diplomat, ambassador to foreign nations, United States Senator and House Representative from Massachusetts, and more. He was the son of John Adams, the second president of the United States. Adams was a strong supporter of social reform, with some of the areas of specific interest being public education, abolition, and temperance. A number of the pamphlets in this collection represent his thoughts on these issues. John Quincy Adams Scope and Content Note This collection consists of published pamphlets of speeches and writings. Most are from John Quincy Adams, and a number of others are from his father, John Adams, and Timothy Pickering, an adversary of both John Adams and his son John Quincy Adams.
