Days that Remember: Feasts, Memory and Faith “I remembered God and was glad.” – Psalm 76:4 (SAAS) “It goes so fast. We don’t have time to look at one another … Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it—every, every minute?” – Thornton Wilder, Our Town, Act III page 12 PRAXIS w Winter 2017 FASTS AND FEASTS DR. NICOLE ROCCAS ive in the present! It’s a panacea for stress that resounds from virtually all corners of our culture. Yet anyone who has tried to put this advice into practice finds the Ltask all but impossible. Even if we manage to still the distrac- tions of our minds, the present is inconceivably finite, a point recognized long before modernity. “That which may be called present,” wrote St. Augustine in the late fourth century, “flies so rapidly from future to past, that it cannot be extended” (Confessions, 11.15). Furthermore, neurological research in- dicates our perceptions are a fraction of a second behind the true present, because the brain requires time to process sensory information. As much as we may want to live in the present, it seems we are forever looking back on it. Even in the Church, it is difficult to dwell in the present. It is hard enough to merely notice every feast that goes by, let alone make it a meaningful part of our lives. Thanks be to God, the ecclesiastical calendar accounts for DAYS THAT REMEMBER this reality. Much of the liturgical year happens in the wake of time—the track left behind by the feast days themselves.

Ustav: The Liturgical Order of Services for the year of the Incarnate Lord 2018 If you have any questions regarding the Ustav or the Liturgical order for the year 2018, please feel free to contact me by email or by phone. Protopriest Haralampij Linsinbigler For those who wish to review the Slavonic Typikon, an online edition can be found here: http://www.orthlib.info/Typikon/Typikon.html CONTENTS: PAGE 1 LITURGICAL VESTMENTS PAGE 3 ALTAR DÉCOR PAGE 4 A NOTE ABOUT SUNDAYS PAGE 4 ABBREVIATIONS AND MEANINGS PAGE 5 RUBRICS FOR 2018 Liturgical Vestments The Slavonic Typikon of St. Sabbas of Jerusalem calls for either “light/bright” vestments or “dark” vestments (in older forms of St. Sabbas, however, it does specify white for Pascha). This leaves the rest up to custom and local tradition. One could assign meanings to the different colors: white for the pure light of God’s energy; green, the color of life, for the Holy Spirit and the wood of the cross; purple for the suffering of Christ; deep red for the blood on the Cross, blood of the martyrs; blue for the Mother of God, angels, and heavenly things; and gold for the richness of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and bright red for the fiery flame of the Spiritual Host. Black is traditionally the color of death and mourning in the West, but in the East white is the color of funerals as it is the color of resurrection. None of this is written down in the rules, and different colors obviously have different meanings for different peoples.

O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance. To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God. The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Ephesians 2:4-10 Brethren, God who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with him, and made us sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God: not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Gospel Reading Luke 18:18-27 At that time, a ruler came to Jesus and asked him, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" And Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.' " And he said, "All these I have observed from my youth." And when Jesus heard it, he said to him, "One thing you still lack.

BULLETIN St. Parthenius, Bishop of Lampsacus – February 7 SaintAfterfeast Parthenius, of the Bishop Meeting of Lampsacus, was a native of the city of Melitoupolis (in northwestern Asia Minor), where his father Christopher served as deacon. The youth did not receive adequate schooling, but he learned the Holy Scripture by attending church services. He had a good heart, and distributed to the poor the money he earned working as a fisherman. Filled with the grace of God, Saint Parthenius from age eighteen healed the sick in the name of Christ, cast out demons and worked other miracles. Learning of the young man’s virtuous life, Bishop Philetus of Melitoupolis educated him and ordained him presbyter. In 325, during the reign of Constantine the Great, Archbishop Achilles of Cyzicus made him bishop of the city of Lampsacus (Asia Minor). In the city were many pagans, and the saint fervently began to spread the faith in Christ, confirming it through many miracles and by healing the sick. The people began to turn from their pagan beliefs, and the saint went to the emperor Constantine the Great seeking permission to tear down the pagan temple and build a Christian church in its place. The emperor received the saint with honor, gave him a decree authorizing the destruction of the pagan temple, and provided him with the means to build a church. Returning WEEKLY to Lampsacus, Saint Parthenius had the pagan temple torn down, and built a beautiful church of God in the city. In one of the razed temples, he found a large marble slab which he thought would be very Today is the beginning of our salvation, the revelation of the eternal mystery.

The rhythm of working and resting, dyingandbeingbornanew, iswovenintoourdays, weeks, and years—seeds preparing the world for Holy Pascha. Every Sunday we recall the creation of the world out of noth- ing; every evening vespers begins the new day in darkness. At Vespers on Saturday evening, we find ourselves on the cusp of the “first day of the week”: transported to the beginning ofthe cosmos, “formless and empty.” However, no sooner have we blessed the Lord for the glory of his works, than we find our- selves plunged into the darkness of sin and death, crying to him “out of the depths.” Nearly from the beginning, we have known our end. Naturally, the Lord inaugurates the re-creation of the world “early on the first day of the week.” From the darkness of sin, the depths of the grave, we hear the first proclamations of resurrec- tion and new life.
