Monday 7 January 2019 FULL CASTING ANNOUNCED FOR THE WEST END TRANSFER OF HOME, I’M DARLING As rehearsals begin, casting is announced for the West End transfer of the National Theatre and Theatr Clwyd’s critically acclaimed co-production of Home, I’m Darling, a new play by Laura Wade, directed by Theatre Clwyd Artistic Director Tamara Harvey, featuring Katherine Parkinson, which begins performances at the Duke of York’s Theatre on 26 January. Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Humans) reprises her acclaimed role as Judy, in Laura Wade’s fizzing comedy about one woman’s quest to be the perfect 1950’s housewife. She is joined by Sara Gregory as Alex and Richard Harrington as Johnny (for the West End run, with tour casting for the role of Johnny to be announced), reprising the roles they played at Theatr Clwyd and the National Theatre in 2018. Charlie Allen, Susan Brown (Sylvia), Ellie Burrow, Siubhan Harrison (Fran), Jane MacFarlane and Hywel Morgan (Marcus) complete the cast. Home, I’m Darling will play at the Duke of York’s Theatre until 13 April 2019, with a press night on Tuesday 5 February. The production will then tour to the Theatre Royal Bath, and The Lowry, Salford, before returning to Theatr Clwyd following a sold out run in July 2018. Home, I’m Darling is co-produced in the West End and on tour with Fiery Angel. How happily married are the happily married? Every couple needs a little fantasy to keep their marriage sparkling. But behind the gingham curtains, things start to unravel, and being a domestic goddess is not as easy as it seems. -

Press Release: Monday 20th January 2020 MAGIC GOES WRONG TO MIRACULOUSLY EXTEND UNTIL AUGUST 2020 Mischief Theatre, the Olivier award-winning company behind The Play That Goes Wrong, is flabbergasted to announce a new booking period for Magic Goes Wrong, with tickets now on sale until 30th August 2020. Created with magic legends Penn & Teller, this is the second production as part of Mischief Theatre’s residency at the Vaudeville Theatre. In the latest ‘Goes Wrong’ comedy to hit the West End, the original Mischief company play a hapless gang of magicians presenting a charity event. As the accidents spiral out of control, so does their fundraising target! The Magic Goes Wrong cast includes: Bryony Corrigan Spitzmaus Roxy Faridany Eugenia Dave Hearn The Blade Henry Lewis Mind Mangler Jonathan Sayer Mickey Henry Shields Sophisticato Nancy Zamit Bär The cast is completed by Natasha Culley, Lauren Ingram, Laurence Pears, Sydney K Smith and Liv Spencer. Magic Goes Wrong is directed by Adam Meggido, designed by Will Bowen with costume designs by Roberto Surace. Lighting design is by David Howe, with Sound Design by Paul Groothuis and Video & Projection Design by Duncan McLean. Ben Hart is the Magic Consultant. The Composer is Steve Brown, alongside Movement Director Ali James and Associate Director Hannah Sharkey. Mischief Theatre Ltd. was founded in 2008 by a group of acting graduates of LAMDA and began as an improvised comedy group. Mischief performs across the UK and internationally with original scripted and improvised work and also has a programme of workshops. Mischief Theatre’s other current 1 London productions are The Play That Goes Wrong and The Comedy About A Bank Robbery, performing at the Duchess Theatre and Criterion Theatre respectively. -

1 Frank 'Slivers' Oakley 1871-1916 The premier clown of his day, Frank 'Slivers' Oakley starred as a clown in the Barnum and Bailey circus and a star in vaudeville with his routine, 'The Baseball Game.' Born in Sweden his family moved to the U.S. When he was 14 he ran away from home and joined the circus. Noted as the most famous clown in the world he had an influence on Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and many others. He is said to be the first to wear the 'big' clown shoes. With the popularity of baseball he performed an act that was about baseball that was extremely popular with the vaudeville audiences. What a night of entertainment when 'Slivers,' Joe Tinker and Jimmy Callahan appeared in the same bill. We find a number of descriptions of 'Slivers' in his baseball act. On the web site 'Our Game' we find a description of his act: 'Slivers, after setting up a diamond in the center ring of the big ten,' emerged as a catcher, with his 'bird cage' mask and heavily padded mitt. He popped his fist in the glove a few times and set up crouching behind the plate. He feigned receiving a pitch, and then n the midst of the motion of tossing the horsehide back to his battery- mate he suddenly wheeled to argue the call with the imaginary ump. throwing off the mask, gesticulating wildly and jawing with his 2 adversary. Stephen Leask, having played the role of alternate Dewey since May this year, will now lead the cast as Dewey Finn from 15 November 2017, as the show enters its second year in the West End. Joining Leask at the New London Theatre will be Alan Pearson as Ned Schneebly, Michelle Francis as Patty Di Marco, currently a member of the ensemble, and Craig Gallivan as the alternate Dewey Finn. Florence Andrews will continue as Rosalie Mullins alongside the three teams of thirteen kids who make up Dewey’s band. THE DRAMATIC WORLD HAROL I PINTER RITUAL Katherine H. Bnrkman $8.00 THE DRAMATIC WORLD OF HAROLD PINTER By Katherine H. Burkman The drama of Harold Pinter evolves in an atmosphere of mystery in which the surfaces of life are realistically detailed but the pat terns that underlie them remain obscure. De spite the vivid naturalism of his dialogue, his characters often behave more like figures in a dream than like persons with whom one can easily identify. Pinter has on one occasion admitted that, if pressed, he would define his art as realistic but would not describe what he does as realism. Here he points to what his audience has often sensed is distinctive in his style: its mixture of the real and sur real, its exact portrayal of life on the surface, and its powerful evocation of that life that lies beneath the surface. Mrs. Burkman rejects the contention of some Pinter critics that the playwright seeks to mystify and puzzle his audience. To the contrary, she argues, he is exploring experi ence at levels that are mysterious, and is a poetic rather than a problem-solving play wright. The poetic images of the play, more over, Mrs. Burkman contends, are based in ritual; and just as the ancient Greeks at tempted to understand the mysteries of life by drawing upon the most primitive of reli gious rites, so Pinter employs ritual in his drama for his own tragicomic purposes. Mrs. Burkman explores two distinct kinds of ritual that Pinter develops in counter point. His plays abound in those daily habit ual activities that have become formalized as ritual and have tended to become empty of meaning, but these automatic activities are set in contrast with sacrificial rites that are loaded with meaning, and force the charac ters to a painful awareness of life from which their daily routines have served to protect them. -

After two months in a refugee camp in Austria, the Kubínek family was granted asylum in Canada and it was there, in St. Catharines, Ontario, that Tomas, age 5, witnessed his first circus. He became passionately interested in clowns, circus, theater and magic and his perplexed yet well‐adjusted parents took him to see every show that passed through town. -

That’s All Folks! Teacher Resource Pack Primary INTRODUCTION Audiences have been delighted and entertained by circus and vaudeville acts for generations. The combination of short performances, showcasing music, dance, comedy and magic, was hugely successful among the working classes during the 19th century, alongside burlesque and minstrel shows, up until the 1930s. That’s’ All Folks blends the ideas from vaudeville, or short and entertaining acts, with the skills of modern circus and slapstick clowning to create an energetic show featuring separate yet interlinked routines that explore different characters and situations throughout the history of the theatre. The actors use a range of circus and clowning skills including juggling, acrobalance, bell routines, slapstick, comical routines, musical chairs, improvisation and audience participation to create an entertaining performance reminiscent of the variety shows of yesteryear. These notes are designed to give you a concise resource to use with your class and to support their experience of seeing That’s All Folks! It played much the same a role in people's lives that radio and later television would for later generations.
