Intermediate Fashion Instructor: Mrs. Dayna Chidester Room #: 2530 Voice Mail: 708-225-4890 E-mail: chidester.dayna@district 205.net Textbook: Clothes and Your Appearance Course Description Students will explore the world of fashion design and careers. Activities are directed toward garment selection and construction; design and embellishment of fashion; and exploration of career opportunities in the apparel industry. Project selections are based on individual skills from beginning to advanced level. Areas of study include selection and coordination of clothing and accessories: construction techniques through a variety of creative projects; utilization of innovative technology; fabric selection and care; design aspects of fashion; apparel industry from production to marketing; and career opportunities in fashion design and marketing. This class provides students with the skills needed for wardrobe development and careers in the apparel industry. Major Instructional Goals Apply concepts using more advanced sewing techniques through the use and proper care of sewing equipment. Distinguish among textile fibers for selection, construction, use and care of clothing. Apply concepts of the elements and principles of design to clothing and accessories. Apply concepts of leadership as responsible family and community members. Analyze career paths within fashion design and merchandising. Course Work Course work will include but will not be limited to (2) garments, a rubric will be provided prior to each garment project to help the student with fabric, pattern and notion selection. In addition, the student will: Construct a fashion history timeline Design from conception an original retail store and present their store design Prepare articles and advertising appropriate for a fashion industry magazine Additional sewing projects as assigned, including home fashions, children’s clothing, and men’s sportswear. Tests and quizzes Additional chapter appropriate class work as assigned Supplies Needed Spiral notebook (teacher provided) Writing Utensil (i.e. pencil or pen) Textbook Notebook and Folder to be used for Introduction to Fashion ONLY Fabric, patterns and notions to complete project (as needed) Grading Policy Class grades are determined through a combination of attendance, journal entries, written work, projects, tests, and participation. Late work will be given half credit. Assignments are expected when due. Students who are absent are expected to turn in any missed class work within 3 days of returning to class. Class participation is taken into consideration and points will be awarded at the teacher’s discretion based on the student attitude, attendance and overall behavior. GRADING SCALE A = 90 – 100 B = 80 – 89 C = 70 – 79 D = 60 – 69 F = 0 – 59 Final A comprehensive final is given at the end of the each semester. Attendance Attendance is expected. All projects must be worked on in class! Parents should notify the Attendance Center (708-225-4705 or Room #1237) each day the student is absent. Homework and make up work guidelines It is the student’s responsibility to check with the teacher as to work missed during the absence. Any explanation needed will be given during CP. Tests missed due to absence will be made up before or after school after a conference with the teacher. Should the student choose not to contact the teacher immediately upon returning to school and make arrangements for the work missed, the missing assignment(s) will be recorded as an “F”. Academic dishonesty All work should be the student’s own work. Anybody caught using somebody else’s work will not get credit for that assignment. Cheating on tests will result in a “F” for that test. Classroom Behavior Bring all books and materials to class with you each day. Sit in your assigned seat daily and remain there unless instructed to do otherwise. Speak using appropriate language. Listen while the teacher is talking. Electronic devices of any kind (headphones, cell phones, IPods, etc.) are not to be used or visible during class time. ID badges must be worn and displayed while in class. Participate in all class activities. Have a positive attitude and a willingness to work with others. Clean up your work area before leaving. ANY MISUSE OF THE SEWING MACHINES THAT RESULTS IN THE MACHINE NEEDING REPAIR WILL RESULT IN A FINE. ALL SUCH FINES WILL NEED TO BE PAID PRIOR TO THE STUDENT FINAL GRADE BEING RELEASED.
