2020-2021 Workshops and Classes State-of-the-art Videoconference Learning 2020-2021 WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES 1Spirit.org Welcome to the 2020 - 2021 year of education at One Spirit Learning Alliance. As a leader in interspiritual education, One Spirit has an organization-wide commitment to personal, professional, spiritual, and educational development. Workshops and classes are broadcast live via a well-developed distance-learning experience. For those who cannot attend at the time classes take place, we offer recordings of most of our classes. Attendance options are noted along with the schedule for each class throughout this catalog. Approximately 57% of households in the world include at least one animal family member, and in the United States, that number is approximately 68%. Our actions affect our pets, and they affect us. How can we strengthen the bond? How do we prepare for the joy of a new animal companion, the confusion of messy health decisions, and the devastation of death or loss? Beyond home, how do we extend compassion to the 8.7 million other species we share this interdependent planet with? As animal lovers, what does our sacred activism look like on behalf of those without a human voice? In this workshop, animal chaplain Sarah Bowen will give you the opportunity to • Dig into what spiritual traditions teach about animals • Explore your relationship with nonhuman beings • Understand how theoethics impacts all beings and our planet • Try interspecies spiritual practices that can strengthen the human/animal bond and bring healing benefits to both • Learn about the field of animal chaplaincy • Receive resources for working with animal adoption, illness, loss, grief, and advocacy • Discover how to extend your professional practice/volunteer work/sacred activism/ministry beyond the two- leggeds Rev. Sarah Bowen has a special interest in the intersection of spiritual values with animal welfare and is a fierce advocate for all creatures. As an animal chaplain, she teaches interspecies mindfulness practices, works with humans around grief/loss of companion animals, loves up animals in shelters, and provides wildlife struck by cars a “sacred sendoff.” Her writing on animal/human relationships has been featured in Spirituality & Health magazine, Tricycle: The Buddhist Review, and Elephant Journal, and on a wide range of podcasts from The Doggy Diva Show to Vegan Spirituality. She is a member of the Association for Pet Loss & Bereavement, is an interfaith/interspiritual minister, and is author of two books on modern spirituality. 4 5 6 RECLAIMING SPIRITUAL YOU: Writing Your Story of Liberation with Crystal Cheatham Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2020 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm ET Videoconference | Recording General Public: $100 | One Spirit Graduates: $90 | One Spirit Elective Credit: 1 When activist Crystal Cheatham came out as a lesbian, she suddenly needed to reframe her belief systems, noting, “Everything was called into question, from my gender expression to my community to what I believed in spiritually.” Are you living fully into your best spiritual self, unencumbered by old thoughts (or other’s opinions)? Are you struggling with any baggage of the past, or how to make sense of the turmoil of our time, or aligning your reality with contradicting core beliefs? Let’s focus on liberation as a life theology. Join Crystal on a freedom adventure of acceptance, self-love, and finding divine connection in mysterious places. With the chorus of a diverse range of authors, Crystal will gently guide you in a spiritual exploration to deconstruct systems of exclusion and oppression and reconstruct the principles of social justice and compassion. Read, write, and grow in this day-long workshop, during which you’ll be invited to • Ask the hard questions • Be vulnerable • Take apart belief systems that no longer serve you while reclaiming what does Crystal Cheatham is an LGBTQ rights activist with a focus on religious liberty. As an entrepreneur, Crystal is the founder of two projects: Our Bible App and The IDentity Kit, both of which provide resources for marginalized communities of faith. As an outspoken activist she has written for The Huffington Post on the intersections of faith and sexual identity, created a column for the Philadelphia Gay News, was a member of the steering committee of the Human Rights Campaign as the faith and spirituality chair, and partnered with Equality PA to influence clergy to support nondiscrimination legislation. She is the host of Lord Have Mercy, a podcast about God, sex, and the Bible, and has been featured in Teen Vogue, Autostraddle, and LGBTQ Nation, among others. 7 SPIRITUAL GROWTH AND THE ENNEAGRAM: Nine Deep Soul Meditations with Robert Holden and Deborah Egerton Friday, October 23, 2020, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm ET Saturday, October 24, 2020, 10:00 am - 3:15 pm ET Sunday, October 25, 2020, 10:00 am - 3:15 pm ET Videoconference | Recording General Public: $310 | One Spirit Graduates: $265 | One Spirit Elective Credit: 2 + $85 Join Robert Holden and Deborah Egerton on a deep 3-day dive into the timeless wisdom of the Enneagram to help you experience practical growth and transformation.     ABSTRACT Title of Document: COMMUNICATING FEAR IN FILM MUSIC: A SOCIOPHOBIC ANALYSIS OF ZOMBIE FILM SOUNDTRACKS Pedro Gonzalez-Fernandez Master of Arts, 2014 Directed By: Dr. Patrick Warfield, Musicology The horror film soundtrack is a complex web of narratological, ethnographic, and semiological factors all related to the social tensions intimated by a film. This study examines four major periods in the zombie’s film career—the Voodoo zombie of the 1930s and 1940s, the invasion narratives of the late 1960s, the post-apocalyptic survivalist fantasies of the 1970s and 1980s, and the modern post-9/11 zombie—to track how certain musical sounds and styles are indexed with the content of zombie films. Two main musical threads link the individual films’ characterization of the zombie and the setting: Othering via different types of musical exoticism, and the use of sonic excess to pronounce sociophobic themes.     HOW TO BE A Great Listener Learn the Art of Listening to Create Intimate Conversation, Trust, and Love How to be a Great Listener Building love and trust involves really listening to our partners, which is not as easy as it sounds. Asking the right questions, empathizing, and making someone feel understood are skills that can dramatically increase intimacy in any relationship. To help you learn how to do this, we recommend that you periodically take your partner’s emotional temperature. You’ll ask, among other things, “How are you doing, baby?” not out of politeness, but because you really want to know. How often is “periodically?” Schedule these times at first, and soon it will come naturally. Try it once a day to start. STEP 1 PREPARE YOURSELF • Shift the focus away from yourself. • Postpone your own agenda for a while. • It’s not about being interesting, it’s about being INTERESTED —genuinely—in the other person. • Tune into your partner’s world. • Hear your partner’s pain, even if you don’t agree with the details. • Try to see your partner’s world from her or his perspective, not your own. Pretend you are doing Mr. Spock’s Vulcan Mind Meld (from Star Trek). 1 STEP 2 ATTUNE That means it’s your job as a listener to be “present” with your partner. Do not minimize your partner’s feelings. The first move involves an exegetical reading of the Markan parable (adapted in Matthew) of “Binding the Strong Man”. This parable serves as an overarching metaphor for the nature of both the fearful realities many young adults find themselves in and the nature of the God who seeks to break into that reality and remind us of our innate value and worth in God. The parable asks us to think about whom we follow and call our leader, for whom we follow will form us at the deepest levels individually and collectively.
