I cannot believe that by the time you read this it will be September. What happened to the summer ? I am writing this on a beautiful sunny day and really praying that the warmth will last for a few weeks at least. The weather has not deterred the usual round of fetes though, and Herbrandston, Marloes and St Brides, and St Ishmaels have all enjoyed theirs without any rain. As I write, the preparations are underway for Dale fete and I’m praying that the rain will hold off for that as well. Our grandson Aidan is going from strength to strength after his traumatic entry to the world, he is growing and starting to smile which is a pure joy. Victoria is continuing to recover and enjoy her baby son. They are going to be visiting us over the next few weeks which will give David and myself opportunity to begin to learn what it’s like to be a grandparent. Enjoy the rest of the summer for it will all too soon be Autumn, I personally am praying for an Indian summer to make up for all the rain.

With Love Linda X

St Ishmaels Festival

A total of £ 1233.64 was raised for St Ishmael’s church, from the sales of local crafts, Gentle music provided a background of calm as visitors enjoyed a peaceful time browsing the beautiful craftsmanship and enjoying a cup of tea. Cakes were in evidence every day, made by local people, and relished by everyone. One gentleman commented, ‘This cake is an ecclesiastical blessing’. The crafts for sale were varied and interesting, and quite obviously the result of many hours hard work by dedicated people. The whole week was a real blessing to all who gave their time to be there and those who visited. Eira Best STOP PRESS FOR ROBESTON WEST

Marloes, St. Brides and Dale Mothers Union

Jane, Heather and Marina hope all our members have had a lovely summer break, and are ready for the start of our Mothers Union meetings. Our September meeting is on Tues. 11th Sept. 7.30pm in Marloes Village Hall, if anyone would like to join us they will be most welcome. Our speaker will be The Revd. Bill Lewis who will speak on "Memories of the Revd. John Stott “ Marina Titley (Sec)

Marloes Village Hall Committee

On behalf of all the Village Hall Committee, we extend our thanks to Jennie and Louise, who have worked so hard on "sprucing" up our Village Hall. Their time, and effort is very much appreciated by us all. Thank you Jennie and Louise. Marina Titley

Ruth Barrett A Memorial Service will be held for Ruth at Dale Church on Monday 24th September at 2pm. Ruth died in New Zealand early in June and wishes her ashes to be interred with John, her husband, in Dale Cemetery. All welcome. Modern music

A member of our congregation came up to me after evening service on Pentecost Sunday and said she had seen a hymn on the morning TV service which she rather liked. I ended up watching the whole of the service on I-player. While I have a collection of modern hymns, all of these were new to me. About ten years ago, we tried a monthly family service at St Mary’s with ‘modern’ hymns played on ‘modern’ instruments. Over time, the various young Herbians involved with this went off to uni, and our present day ventures into the modern music genre tend to be when Peter the organist is away, and involve just singers, guitar, clarinet and sometimes drums. Now that we have two vicars spread over six churches, all covered by Peninsula papers, I thought it might be worth floating the idea again. Might there be enough people on the peninsula interested in modern Christian music, able either to sing a bit or play an instrument. Could, we perhaps meet every so often, try out some hymns and songs, and maybe run a modern music service every few months at a different location. If you are interested, please email or phone me (details on the cover) and let me know your skills and contact details. Peter Absolon

The Great Puffin Hunt with Coast National Park

Help find the missing puffins !

The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is 60 this year and it seems even the puffins want to stay a little longer to help us celebrate. We need to find them before winter – can you help?

Each weekend between September 8 th and October 14 th , our cuddly puffins will be hiding out around the Park. Clues to their location will be given on Radio Pembrokeshire, www.pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk , Twitter ( @pembscoast ) and Facebook ( Pembrokeshire Coast ) on Thursdays and Fridays.

If you find a puffin, you can keep it and you’ll be invited to join our 60 th anniversary celebration on 27 th October where you could win £600. For more information, visit www.pembrokeshirecoast.org.uk .

Emerald Aces at the Lobster Pot Saturday 6th October

The Emerald Aces will be playing at the Lobster Pot, Marloes on Saturday 6th October. Neil and Emma have once more kindly allowed us the use of their premises for what should be a lively and musical evening. Elwyn Bryant has asked us again this year to help raise funds for the Pembrokeshire Parkinsons Group and all proceeds will go towards their charity. Tickets for the evening will go on sale in September. You supported the event fabulously well last year so let us hope we do as well in 2012.

St. Ishmaels Forum Next meeting is at the Memorial Hall. 7.30 on October 4 th All residents welcome COASTLANDS LOCAL HISTORY GROUP

So that was summer! However, we had two extremely good (dry!) visits to cheer us up. The visit to Butterhill Grange was excellent. Members from the original trip were astonished at the progress made on The Grange and the other buildings. Our thanks to David Palmer for allowing us to visit, Rob Scourfield for his interesting insights…added to by Jim Philips who had lived at the Grange, Richard and Liz Neale for feeding and watering us so magnificently and guiding us so well around the converted outbuildings and our thanks to the owners who allowed us free range around the site! Our trip to Milford Haven Museum was an eye-opener. The Museum gives an amazing insight into the history of Milford, and the Port of Milford and is well worth a visit. We are indebted to Derek Davies for his opening remarks, and, with his colleagues for assisting with the many questions which arose. Our evening ended very happily at The Harbourmaster. All this could have been enjoyed by you… if a member…so why not try us on for size this autumn!

We now look forward to the Autumn programme which kicks off with an illustrated talk by Derek Rees on “Tales of War-time Pembrokeshire”. The venue will be Marloes Village Hall, on Monday 17 th September at 7.30pm. We look forward to seeing you all there. Harriet Bishop

In answer to questions from members of the community, it is confirmed:

1. Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) units provided using funds raised by members of the communities of Marloes / St Brides and Dale are in place and ready for action in Marloes (in the "Lobster Pot") and at Dale (on the wall outside West Wales Windsurfers).

2. PAD equipment can be used by any member of the public - a "good samaritan" - (with or without training) to provide assistance to someone showing signs of heart failure / distress. The PAD equipment is designed to be operated by untrained members of the public under guidance by telephone from the ambulance 999 operator - in this way, it is said to be "foolproof".

3. The procedure for using the PAD equipment is that the "good samaritan" phones 999 (ambulance) to report the problem and call the ambulance in the usual way. The ambulance operator should be aware of the existence of the nearby PAD equiment and will give step-by-step instructions on the telephone as to how to find, open, set up and use the equipment for the rescuer(s) to follow - the ambulance will already be on the way and will take over as soon as it arrives. When used in this way the "good samaritans" are fully covered by the Welsh Ambulance Service insurance policy.

4. Prompt use of the equipment has been shown to provide a very significant improvement in the the patient's chances of survival.

5. Fundraising is continuing and it is hoped that we will in due course have sufficient funds to provide additional PAD units at St Brides and Martin's Haven.

6. Some members of the Marloes / St Brides and Dale community have already received first aid training from the ambulance service - this is not necessary for the operation of a PAD unit, but is generally very useful in our community. It is hoped that another training session will be given (free of charge) by the ambulance service later in the year. If you would like your name to go on the list for the next ambulance first aid training session, please let me know ( [email protected] or 636 668).

If you have any questions - or if you wish to contribute funds towards the scheme - please let me know. Hugh Bishop, 01646 636 668

Don't Want To Go To Church!

A mother went to wake her son for church one Sunday morning. When she knocked on his door, he said, "I'm not going!" "Why not?" asked his mother. "I'll give you two good reasons," he said. "One, they don't like me. Two, I don't like them." His mother replied, "I'll give you two good reasons why YOU WILL go to church. One, you're 47 years old. Two, you're the vicar!” Submitted by Bill Morse

Young Buzzards

A common sight and sound at this time of the year is a young buzzard circling around and plaintively calling “pee-ooooo”. This can be roughly interpreted as “foo-ooood”! They have left the nest but are by no means independent and will rely on their parents for food for several weeks. Indeed, young buzzards do not find it easy to learn how to find food - three quarters of young buzzards die, mostly from starvation, before they mature at three years old. It takes them a while to learn how to catch rabbits, rats and voles, and also how to fill up on frogs, worms and beetles when the mammals are not forthcoming!

Young buzzards at this time of the year often look very smart, sporting their new feathers, compared with the care-worn adults, who have stared to moult and are usually missing a few wing feathers. But young buzzards can often be a bit confusing - they can look long tailed, compared with an adult - and this can make you wonder if you are looking at something perhaps more interesting like a Goshawk or a Honey Buzard This “long tailed” look is actually due to the fact that their wing feathers are a bit short - they grow them very fast in the nest and they are not quite up to the standard of adult wing feathers!

With the reduction in persecution, and the ban on DDT, buzzards have made a rapid and dramatic spread into parts of the UK where they were never previously seen. My brother in Hertfordshire now has buzzards breeding near his village whereas only a few years ago a trip to Wales was needed to see them! Rosemary Royle
