On behalf of our family I would like to say a very big 'Thank You' to Linda our Vicar who offered to Baptise my great grandson on September the 1st 2013. The local Vicar in their village in Buckinghamshire refused to carry out the baptism because the young couple were unable to attend church on a regular basis. Linda was big hearted, generous and acted with Christian kindness by offering to carry out the service at St Ishmaels church. Bethan and Troy Kent and also Sophie together with two sets of godparents travelled down for the occasion. Linda made the service a very happy and memorable occasion and I believe we are very lucky to have a truly caring vicar who extended that care way beyond her parish. Deanne Strong

In Aid of St. Ishmael’s Church St Ishmaels Memorial Hall

Feasibility Study - Mr. Kevin Thompson, Idea Architects, has advised that the report and design options will be completed by the end of September.

History Project - Great assistance has been provided by Mr. Mike Askew who has a relative living locally who has trawled through the relevant websites to find information on all the men listed in the summer edition of Peninsula Papers. Three of the men on that list are not on the Memorial Hall plaque - William Morris, Claude Thomas and Sidney Davies. Can anyone advise why they were omitted? This information will be reviewed at the meeting on the 30th September, and it is intended to have the main details available in early November - see item below. Any further information on the descendants of these men will be very welcome.

Fundraising - It is planned to hold a Coffee Morning on Saturday 9th November from 10am to 12 noon to raise funds for the Hall. There will be a Bring and Buy Cake Stall, and a Raffle and it is hoped that volunteers will come forward to help on the morning, and provide cakes and raffle prizes. On the morning also, information will be displayed about the men recorded on the Roll of Honour, and also about the role St. Ishmaels played during World War 1. If you have any memorabilia about the men involved, or about those who fought and returned please bring the items with you. We are also interested in any information about the events and celebrations that have been held in the Memorial Hall over the years.

Any enquiries to Colin Jenkins (636392) and Yvonne Evans (636251)

Remember one man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure!

Heather Phippen Wooltack Point National Coastwatch Institution

Last year Wooltack Point NCI achieved ‘declared facility status’ (DFS), which means that we are now an official part of the local search and rescue team, our main function is to act as "eyes along the coast", watching for people in difficulty and tasked to "spot, report, plot and respond" information to HM Coastguard in Milford Haven.

Our principle job is to keep a visual watch on all the vessels in our area, from the tankers anchored in St Brides Bay to the divers, anglers and canoes exploring the wondrous coastline from the sea. We also observe people on shore, anglers on the cliffs, walkers on the coastal path, seal watchers and the like, twice we have reported fires seen in the area. In addition to the visual watch we also keep a radio watch and are ready to relay messages for the Coastguard when vessels are in radio shadow from their Headquarters in Milford Haven.

We aim to man the hut every day; watches are four hours long and we managed one watch most weekday afternoons, with two a day at weekends and bank holidays. A record is kept of local weather conditions which we are happy to pass on to when requested, phone the station on 07817 871549 or, if at sea, contact Wooltack Point NCI on Ch M1 (aka Ch 37A), if the flag is flying over the station there should be someone inside.

Summer 2013 in the old Coastguard hut on Wooltack Point was busy at times, some days we observed more than 50 vessels; fortunately there were very few incidents, the most notable was helping with communications during the rescue of the Lady Helen last May.

We are recruiting, and autumn is the best time to join NCI, no experience needed (but be aware that the Watch Station is at the top of a steep track, and there is no loo), full training will be given, most of it ‘on the job’. If you are interested in volunteering to spend a couple of watches a month up on the Deer Park – lots of clouds, birds, insects, plants and marine mammals, as well as boats and people - please contact Richard Neale on 01646 636802 St Ishmaels Cricket Club

Here we are at the end of another season. The weather, unlike last year, has been very kind to us. Both teams only had one abandoned game each due to heavy rain. It has been a season where we have experienced some of the most exciting, brilliant games ever but there have also been some lows with abysmal & disappointing results. Still both the 1 st XI (coming sixth) & 2 nd XI (coming fourth) remain in their respective Divisions. Although we didn’t manage to reach any of the Cup Finals we live in hope of acquiring some silverware next season. The annual cricket club dinner for St Ishmaels C.C. was held at the St Ishmaels Sports & Social Club on Saturday 31 st August after the last game of the season. It proved to be a most enjoyable evening with a BBQ, presentations & thanks were extended to Mel Williams who does a sterling job with the wicket, those who gave the raffle prizes, the caterers, all the ladies who provided excellent teas throughout the 2013 season and to our very generous sponsors. We, at St Ishmaels C.C., are extremely proud of the achievements of Andrew Salter. Since his debut for Glamorgan 1 st XI in the Glamorgan v Leicestershire game at St Helen’s where he became only the third Glamorgan bowler to take a wicket with his first ball in Championship cricket, he has had a tremendous season. He is in the 13 strong squad to play at Lord’s in the YB40 Final – we wish him well for this game & his future cricketing career. He is an inspiration to us all!

Wendy Bradshaw, St Ishmaels C.C.

I am writing this in early September – it is still warm and sunny, though the evenings are drawing in and the dews are heavy. There are still plenty of butterflies in the garden – most of the Red Admirals and Peacocks have disappeared but they have been replaced by another generation of Speckled Woods. And, I am glad to say, there are now quite a few Small Tortoiseshells. They seem to have been in very short supply this year – earlier in August the Buddleia was a-flutter with good numbers of Upperwing Underwing many species but no Small Tortoiseshells at all. A few have now appeared, but this contrasts with previous years when they have been abundant, sunning themselves on the gravel paths so that you have to be careful not to tread on them.

Ever since we have lived here I have rejoiced in the sight of so many Small Tortoiseshells. This is because their numbers have reduced dramatically in other parts of the UK, by as much as 80%, and in many places it is no longer a common garden butterfly. The reasons for the decline are not currently proven, but it is thought to be due to a combination of unfortunate summer weather and the arrival in the UK of a parasitoid fly in 1999 which seems to affect Small Tortoiseshells especially badly. It is possible that this parasitoid fly has now arrived in Pembrokeshire and we are seeing the effects. It will be interesting to see what happens next year.

One butterfly which has been truly abundant here this year is the Wall, or Wall Brown. Each year I expect to see this attractive little butterfly once or twice in the garden, and perhaps several times on the clifftops and coast path, but this year they have been positively common. We have had up to 6 in the garden for many Upperwing Underwing weeks, there have been plenty in the hedgebanks and they have been almost abundant on the clifftops. This is wonderful to see – and again, it will be very interesting to see what happens next year. Rosemary Royle
