President’s Report 2019 has been a huge year for CUHC, both on and off the field. It has been a real privilege to lead the club in my first year as President, and I am excited by what we have managed to achieve, and our plans for the future.

We fielded 21 teams across Hockey WA competitions in 2019, which included our first ever year 3-4 junior team and an entire new team of Curtin students. The club retained both our premier league teams, and also fielded teams for regional and international competition, seeing our local and international footprint grow. We have continued our strong representative representation at national and international level throughout 2019

This year, we undertook a major transformative process, to digitise and upgrade our management processes. 2019 saw the club move to a digital platform to manage club operations and governance, and institute a new financial model that has resulted in a strong fiscal position. The club has also taken a leading role in major changes in competition management and structure in WA.

This season, we specifically focussed on our club values, holding sessions on values with our committee and volunteers. The club is now becoming deliberately values driven, in line with the strategic plan and more broadly the University. This year, our partnership with the University went from strength to strength, significantly growing our footprint on campus.

2019 saw CUHC embark on a number of key development plans across the club. We executed regional and junior development plans, and brought on new sponsors from local partners. The club supported hockey in Tambellup, Narrogin and Bunbury, and provided entry level programs for over 500 children. We also took a leading role in inclusivity initiatives across Hockey in WA this year and look forward to building on these in 2020.

As a community club sponsorship is critical for our success, particularly our ability to field premier teams whilst also ensuring we can support all grades. Curtin is seeking to integrate with industry at all levels and we are committed to ongoing partnership with local businesses. Our sincere thanks go to:

1. Denning and Associates (Elspeth and Grant Denning) 2. New Town Toyota 3. Curtin University 4. Thermal Airconditioning (Ian Kealley) 5. Cambridge Periodontics (Darryl Andrews) 6. Hockey International (Jinder and Preet) 7. Hoopla Espresso 8. Desam Fashion (Kerstin and Denis Otway) 9. Chalk n Cheese Bar & Kitchen (Maddy and Dom Chalker) 10. The Balmoral 11. Bankwest

We could not do what we do without all our volunteers, so a huge thank you is due to the executive and sub-committee for the many, many hours you have contributed to our club and the sport of hockey in WA. A further thank you also to all our coaches, team managers, family and supporters, we wouldn’t be able to run the club without you, and you’ve been brilliant through the entire year.

As we move into 2020, we will also be moving into a new strategic planning process. I encourage you all to join us as we continue to build the Pirate community into a great university club.

Curtin Liaison Report Our links with Curtin University continue to strengthen, with 2019 seeing us really cement our place within the sporting infrastructure of the University. This year, our partnership with the University went from strength to strength, and we have been well supported by Curtin Stadium in a wide array of endeavours.

The club participated in every University engagement opportunity across both semesters, recruiting a range of new members throughout the year. We contributed on a strategic level to the Curtin sport strategy summit, where we provided input and suggestions on how the University can grow its sporting clubs, and leverage sport across a range of operations and initiatives.

We have actively engaged in Curtin sporting activities, including providing coaches for Carnaby Kids, and attending other Curtin Club events. Curtin Stadium have also actively promoted CUHC through their social media, and other outlets.

The club have furthered our collaboration with other Curtin Clubs, specifically with Curtin Rugby and Football with whom we share our clubrooms. This year we were able to formalise our presence in the clubrooms, coming to an agreement on usage of the cool room and installing our own fridge which has enabled us to operate a bar facility in clubrooms for the first time since 2016. This has transformed the club culture, and resulted in some much needed additional funding to support the club.

Our grass grounds on Edinburgh South continued to improve this year, and we were successful in securing the grounds just for hockey, with the occasional overflow for football. In an exciting new development, as a result of us firming our presence on the grounds, the space has now been formally designated as a sporting facility by Curtin Properties, and the University has slated initial plans for redeveloping the grounds into dedicated hockey fields with lighting.

We have proudly met all our affiliation requirements this year, and are grateful to Curtin Stadium for their ongoing support. The support they have provided this year has been significant, including attending our games, fixing up our goals, and helping with partnerships and collaborations.

We look forward to continuing our Curtin journey in 2020.

Membership and Recruitment Director’s Report

2019 has been a great year for my first year being a part of the CUHC committee. The position of Membership and Recruitment Director has been one that has taught me new skills and attributes about how a club works as well as the various types of people we can attract to our club. Overall for the year we were able to recruit very well, our membership number is up about 20 members since the 2018 season. A large amount of new university students have been recruited into our teams, a significant number coming from country areas as well as a few players from overseas such as Ireland and Belgium. In a way this was reflected by having to field a 7th women’s team for this year, competing in the same division as the women’s 6th team. Across both men’s and women’s competitions, many recruits did find their way into our 3’s and 2’s teams, reflecting the sort of talent we are able to attract.

10 Curtin University Hockey Club Curtin Stadium, Curtin University www.cuhc.org.au

Throughout the year we had many various Curtin Uni based recruitment stalls, with 3 occurring in semester 1 and another 2 happening in semester 2. At these stalls I’ve put out the call for club members, particularly students to volunteer their time to help run the stall. I’m happy to say that I’ve always had members put their hands up to take some time out of their day to help me and I’m truly thankful for their generosity. Each stall has managed to attract many people to fill out their details for their expressions of interest to play hockey for our club, with people asking lots of questions about what we do as a club, what the fees are, what teams we have, when our games are?, etc… I have also been contacted many times directly by email and phone, something that I feel is great because we know prospective recruits are looking at our social media and website and using our contact details to their advantage. I think a major factor in holding onto and gaining new recruits is the type of culture we have at this club, we have a very inclusive culture something that’s bought about by our leaders from each team and to see so many of these new players at the various social events throughout the year is a testament to this.

Going into next year, there are a lot of things I know can be improved on for this role, particularly the visual presence we have at the recruiting stalls. I feel as though the visual appeal is not up to scratch when you look at all the other clubs we’re surrounded by. Also the handing out of information flyers tailored for uni students would be a great way to give the specifics to this target, further streamlining the way this role can be conducted.

Overall I have felt as though I’ve had a great year in my role as Membership and Recruitment Director for 2019 and I shall look forward to developing further if I retain the role for 2020.

Women’s Coordinator’s Review

This season saw the introduction of a 7th Women’s turf team, highlighting the continued growth of our women’s competition. This number is expected to grow further in 2020. Really promising signs for the 1’s team this season who could have made the finals but were hit with injuries with 7 top players being out for up to 8 weeks. Competition was very close with 5 points difference between 1st and 6th. It was a tough year for the 2’s as many had to double up to help the 1’s team, they were still in with a chance at finals up to the last game. Our Premier Alliance, Provisional and Masters’ teams all achieved respectable results this season. Our 3’s Women achieved seventh place and were often supporting the 2’s with extra players throughout the season. The Women’s 4’s secured their third-straight finals series, winning a thrilling semi-final during golden goal, before narrowly losing to Rockingham in the preliminary final 2-1. Our Women’s 5’s also achieved a result of seventh supported by their coach, Tom Lees. The final game of the 5s season highlighting the growth of this team and the things to come in 2020. The Women’s 6’s, CUHC’s newest team coached by Patrick Wallis, had a fantastic season securing seventh place despite the entire team playing together with the club for the first time. Our Women’s 7’s, who also shared the same division as our 6’s, achieved fifth place and the honorary bragging rights in the first CUHC Derby against the 7’s this season. Finally, our Women’s O/35 Masters finished the season in eighth place, and continue to represent CUHC masters proudly. Thank you to all of the Women’s coaches and managers this year across all grades, without your support and the hours you volunteer, the teams and the club itself would not achieve the great results that it does. We look forward to 2020 and the continued growth of Women’s Hockey at Pirates.

Men’s Coordinator’s Review

I would like to congratulate all CUHC Men’s players for their commitment and endeavour throughout season 2019. It was a year of ups and downs for our Premier League, with plenty of strong performances including a huge win over UWA, as well as a few disappointing losses, perhaps demonstrating the inconsistency often seen in young and inexperienced teams. In a particularly important year with the change in competition structure on the horizon, the boys managed to successfully avoid the relegation zone quite comfortably, with a few minor adjustments required to get back in touch with the rest of the field. We had six Premier League Debutants in 2019 - Tim Adams, Alexander Adlam, Matthew Mercer, Brad O'Neill, Liam Sweeney, and Tim Wallis, as well as five more players making their club debut with the Pirates in the Premier League - Tim Howard (National side), Alexander Idoine (Import), Timothy Idoine (Import), Patrick Lawther (Melville HC), and Maverick Yow (Melville HC). Very promising signs for the future with a lot of improvement to come from within, as well as some work to be put in by recruiters in the off-season. Premier 1 coach Nick Budgeon, unfortunately tied up with his overseas playing commitments for much of the year, managed to pull the strings from afar with help from Paul Armitage, Julie Branley and a few senior players. When available, Nick makes a significant difference both on field and off, with his commitment to training and discipline admired by the squad. Hopefully these attributes can continue to translate to the entire Premier League Squad, and result in a continued rise up the rankings. Although there wasn’t a great deal to celebrate on field throughout the rest of the premier and provisional grades, there was a great deal of positive energy and camaraderie off it. Players had opportunities to play and train with higher grades in order to develop their skills, and numbers were again improved on last year making selecting teams a challenging but rewarding assignment. There

12 Curtin University Hockey Club Curtin Stadium, Curtin University www.cuhc.org.au was always good attendance at social events from this area of the club, and plenty of fundraising happening over the club’s new bar facility at Edinburgh Oval. Finally, I would personally like to thank all coaches and managers for the 2019 season. The efforts of these selfless people are vital for the smooth operation of the club. Clubs and teams would not exist without volunteers and the people mentioned below have made the coordinator’s job much more manageable. Looking forward to where we can take the club in season 2020 and beyond!

Master’s Coordinator’s Review

Masters O/35 Div 3 Women had a season of two halves. Undefeated in the first three games, sitting near the top of the table mid-season….. then lost the next seven games! Plan B for next season, and some goal scoring practice? And not allowing our goal keeper to go on an overseas holiday mid- season. We had two Masters Men’s teams this year - O/40 Div 2 & O/60 Div 1. Our 40’s team struggled after being promoted. They were struggling for numbers as a few key players left the club but to their credit have convinced a few old players to return for next year, only winning one game for the year we will unfortunately be relegated. 60’s in division one did a lot better finishing fifth in our grade with Gary Adlam having a massive heart attack on field and survived, thanks for the prompt emergency action from everyone who was involved. We hope to add an O/50 Div 3 side for next season and have people moving up the grade as they get older. Thanks to our managers Damian Ellis and Richard Moore for a great job this season and thanks to the support from the committee for watching some of our games. We will be bigger and better next year.

Junior’s Coordinator’s Review

Over the past few years, CUHC has recognised the need for re-build in our junior division and in the 2019 season we saw this vision begin to take form. We welcomed our first junior boys to the club in many years with the addition of a new grade – Mixed J3/4’s! These young players, many never holding a hockey stick in their hand before have excelled this year and are sure to be great additions to Pirates for future years.

Our strong ties to Mercedes College helped fill the remaining 4 junior teams this year, however we are beginning to branch out to local secondary schools welcoming players from Penrhos College, Kent St High School and Como SHS this year. The links we have made this year will continue to develop and be maintained in future years to encourage more secondary students to play hockey at CUHC. Through Hockey WA we have provided coaches for Wesley College afterschool programs and partnered with the Get Active Project to run introductory hockey programs in the Wilson area. Through Curtin Stadium, we have provided coaches for multiple Penrhos College after school programs and Have-a-Go days.

13 Curtin University Hockey Club Curtin Stadium, Curtin University www.cuhc.org.au

As a club, our focus has been to increase student participation at the primary school level and provide an easy pathway for students to transition into our junior teams. To that end, our co- ordinator has been working alongside other junior coaches to develop a standard 16 week program to be carried out in any partnered school regardless of player experience. The aim is to create young hockey players in a fun, engaging environment ready to join our junior teams entering Hockey WA competitions. CUHC has run multiple programs throughout 2019 at Regent College (Victoria Park), Aubin Grove Primary (Aubin Grove), St Columba’s Catholic Primary (South ) and Ursula Frayne Primary (Victoria Park) exposing more than 280 students to hockey at CUHC. Maintaining the links with the above schools and the development of new associations with local schools will provide the basis to re-build our junior club to its former glory.

I would like to personally thank all the members, coaches, parents, players and volunteers who all contributed to the junior division this year - without you, this work would not be able to continue. We are looking forward to a great 2020 season!

The CUHC 2019 social calendar was a full one! With the official move to our new club rooms on Edinburgh Oval, we finally found a place to call our own after a long few years of negotiations. The club rooms brought new life to the club’s social scene, with members across all grades and age groups coming together throughout the year to use the facility. One of the highlights of the year was our junior end of season event, which saw around 130 players, parents and friends come down to the clubrooms for a bbq lunch and awards. We are looking forward to increasing our use of the club rooms in 2020, and dusting off our honour boards and memorabilia for display!

The club held a range of formal events through the year including:

· Registration Day · Quiz Night · Country Trip · Past Players Day · End of Season Functions (junior and senior)

The Quiz night brought in one of our highest number of attendees at a social event in recent years, with representation from all our senior teams! Having informally had Pirates teams go on the annual Country Trip for years, this year we formally ran the annual trip to the Great Southern Hockey Carnival through the club, sending two mixed teams to Tambellup. Next year’s carnival will be held in Bruce Rock and we can’t wait. This social trip helps to support hockey in the regions and continues to play a big role in our commitment to country hockey. As we gear up for 2020, we’re planning to release the social calendar earlier in the season and ensure our events cater for players, members and supporters across all our teams.
