POMPEII & ARCHAEOLOGICAL

Port: Naples, Italy Tour Code: NAP_45

Link the pieces of the puzzle when you visit Pompeii’s ruins together with its uncovered history and treasures housed at the archeological museum. Travel along the coast with magnificent views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius - the still-active volcano that buried Pompeii in 79 A.D. - in the backdrop. At the ruins of Pompeii, you'll discover the archeological excavations of a lost city buried deep beneath the ash from Mt. Vesuvius. Entering by the sea gate, your walking tour takes in the city's baths, villas, theaters and wrestling grounds. Plaster casts mark the positions of the fallen that were swiftly overcome by volcanic ash. Your knowledgeable guide will point out the remarkably preserved remains that hint at daily Roman life, their customs, cuisine and how they entertained, decorated and lived. Highlights include stunning frescoes and elaborately detailed mosaic-inlaid floors of wealthy homeowners' villas, as Pompeii was a vacation community for high society. On the way back to Naples, you’ll stop at a cameo factory where artisans have honed their craft for generations. You'll have some time to shop for handmade seashell and coral jewelry, including intricately carved brooches, rings and bracelets. Once back in Naples, dine at a typical Neapolitan pizzeria where you'll experience the "original pizza" in the city that boasts the world's first pizzeria, dating back to 1830. Sit back and enjoy classic Pizza Margherita accompanied by a mixed green salad and beverages. Before heading to our next stop, take a sightseeing loop around the city for a quick orientation, driving past the round-towered Castel Nuovo, San Carlo Opera House, Umberto Gallery, the Royal Palace and San Francesco di Paola Church. Driving along the waterfront, notice the site where Naples was first founded: Castel dell'Ovo or "egg castle". Its curious name comes from a Roman legend that claimed the castle was built over an egg placed on the site with the belief that if the egg broke Naples would fall. Visit The National Archaeological Museum next. Originally cavalry barracks, Charles of Bourbon established the museum in the late 18th century to house the fantastic Farnese Collection that he had inherited. Highlights include the Farnese Bull and a classical Roman sculpture depicting figures from Greek mythology. The museum possesses an extraordinary collection of murals, frescoes and mosaics from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Note: Tour cannot be offered on Norwegian Spirit’s June 15th and October 1st 2012 sailings, or for those guests sailing on any Norwegian Epic 2012 sailings. During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water. This tour includes extensive walking during the visit to Pompeii’s excavations. There is approximately 2 ½ miles of walking while on tour and 40 steps to negotiate in the museum.

WALKING TOUR THROUGH NAPLES’ SECRETS

Port: Naples, Italy Tour Code: NAP_44

This walking tour introduces you to some of Naples’ best kept secrets, including castles dating as far back as the 13th century, an underground tunnel built by order of Ferdinand II of Bourbon, and the most monumental and harmonious square of the city. Leaving the port on foot, your first view of the city takes you back to the 13th century with the Castle Nuovo, a grim and gloomy fortress that served as the residence of the kings of Anjou, Aragon, and the Spanish Viceroys. Continuing along the Naples seaside, you’ll see the famous Castle of the Egg in Santa Lucia; with its spectacular waterfront views, it offers a perfect photo opportunity. Stop to snap a picture before starting your walk through the Bourbon Tunnel. Some 150 years after Ferdinand II of Bourbon and his architect Errico Alvino designed it, the Bourbon Tunnel (Tunnel Borbonico), a splendid underground route through Mount Echia, has been reopened to the public. The Tunnel, born as a military route, went from the Royal Palace to Via Morelli. Along the same path, an interception of networks of tunnels and reservoirs linked to the ancient aqueduct of Carmignano, which served the city of

POMPEII EXCAVATIONS

Port: Naples, Italy Tour Code: NAP_56

Pompeii once supported a flourishing civilization that was revealed nearly intact after being buried for about 1,700 years. The once-prosperous commercial and political center with a population of 25,000 was hidden under 20 feet of volcanic ash and cinders during the fateful eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Originally a seaport, the eruption raised the land and left the ruined town far from the bay. You’ll enter Pompeii through the Sea Gate and walk along the cobblestone streets to the Agora. Surrounded by temples and porticoes, this was the religious, civic and business center of the city. Because Pompeii was so well preserved, you can see many fine details that reveal the lifestyles of the residents, such as mosaic floors and colorful frescoes in some of the homes. As you wander through this ancient city, you can’t help but notice the still-active Mount Vesuvius towering above. If time permits, you’ll visit a cameo factory nearby to see how the famous jewelry is made and then have some time to browse the store. Note: During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water. RUINS OF HERCULANEUM

Port: Naples, Italy Tour Code: NAP_57

Mainly a fishing village, Herculaneum was most appreciated for its position overlooking the Bay of Naples. It became very rich as it was chosen as a summer resort by wealthy Romans who built wonderful villas adorned with magnificent frescoes, mosaics and great sculptures. There’s a feeling about Herculaneum that’s quite different from what one feels in other ancient world centers brought to light so far, including Pompeii. The torrent of mud flooding down from the volcano served for centuries as the best possible defense against atmospheric agents and illegal excavators. See the houses, shops, and baths, including wooden elements, foodstuffs and fabrics that are preserved intact, thus offering a unique vision of their lives long ago. En route, visit a cameo factory nearby to see how the famous jewelry is made and then have some time to browse the store.

The drive between Naples and Salerno is approximately 45 minutes and from Sorrento to Naples is approximately 1 1/2 hours. Guests wishing to enter the Cathedral of St. Andrew on their own must ascend approximately 60 or more very steep steps. The order of the tour may be reversed. The motor launch has both inside and outside seating. In case of bad weather conditions and/or rough seas, the cruise to Amalfi will be cancelled and an orientation drive of Naples will be made instead. Due to traffic restrictions of the Sorrento center a short walk from the motorcoach drop off point to the main center and vice versa will be required. During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water.

WONDERS OF LUCCA & PISA

Port: Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy Tour Code: LIV_58

Combine two of the most famous Tuscan towns: Lucca, with a colorful history that stretches back to the days of the ancient Etruscans, and Pisa with its famous Field of Miracles with the cathedral, baptistery, and of course, the Leaning Tower. Arriving in Lucca, take a guided walk through the old town, which retains its Renaissance- vintage fortified walls. Stroll from piazza to piazza and learn the city’s history through its architecture. The Duomo, Lucca’s Romanesque cathedral dates from the 12th century and features a facade with elaborate relieves and columns. The Gothic interior features an image of Christ on the cross, supposedly carved by Nicodemus, a purported witness of the crucifixion. The Duomo also boasts Tintoretto's magnificent painting of the Last Supper. You’ll have free time in Lucca to enjoy your activity of choice; explore, eat or shop! Once a powerful maritime republic and a rival to Genoa and Venice, Pisa offers Renaissance splendor of its own. A short guided walk leads to the Field of Miracles where you’ll receive a brief orientation on Pisan history. The Piazza is the site of Pisa’s Duomo, baptistery, Campo Santo, and of course, the campanile – the famous Leaning Tower. Galileo is said to have used the 180-foot campanile during his experiments with gravity. Today, the tower leans 14-degrees from perpendicular. Recently reopened, admittance to the tower is limited and is not included in the excursion. Pisa’s Duomo is a mixture of Tuscan and Romanesque styles and the black and white interior marble arches are thought to have been inspired by Islamic architecture. You’ll have plenty of photo and shopping opportunities on this

During the tour enjoy a tasting of a typical specialty: the "lard" served with hot bread and a glass of typical wine. THE CINQUE TERRE

Port: Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy Tour Code: LIV_56

A drive north takes you to the Cinque Terre, where you’ll embark on a scenic cruise. It’s one of the best-preserved areas of the Mediterranean, with centuries-old footpaths and mule tracks winding high above the sea, leading through olive groves, vineyards, orchards and woods. Arriving in Manarola, you’ll enjoy walking along the "street of love," a seaside path that leads to Rio Maggiore. Here, you’ll board another motorboat that will take you to the fishing village of Vernazza, where you’ll enjoy time at leisure. No visit to the Cinque Terre can end without visiting Monterosso al Mare. After an introduction from your guide, you’ll have free time to explore the tiny shops and have lunch on your own. Note: Villages may be visited in reverse order. Motorboat transport is not wheelchair accessible and depends on the weather and sea conditions between villages. Transport can be on choppy seas; the train will be used when conditions prohibit boat transfers. Your guide will meet you in La Spezia. However, you’ll have an escort with you throughout the day. There is approximately 2 miles of walking through gravel, uneven and inclined terrains.

PISA TOWER CLIMB

Port: Florence/Pisa (Livorno), Italy Tour Code: LIV_82

Drive through the lovely Tuscan countryside en route to the historic town of Pisa, located on the banks of the Arno River. During World War II, much of Pisa was destroyed by German and Allied bombing, however the cathedral, baptistery and famous leaning tower escaped unharmed. Arriving at the Field of Miracles, you’ll join your guide for a climb up the 294 steps to discover the world-famous Leaning Tower. Built to display the wealth of Pisa, the bell tower began leaning during construction because of the foundation settling unevenly as builders reached the fourth story. The builders compensated for the angle but the tower continued its tilt. Today, the tower leans 14 degrees from perpendicular. Continue down to the open-air square for a brief explanation of the Cathedral and the Baptistery. You’ll have some free time to browse for souvenirs and gifts at the many stalls lining the walk to the Field of Miracles. Note: Participants must be at least 8 years of age to climb the Tower. Even though the tower has reopened to the public, Italian authorities have strict limitations on the amount of persons allowed in per hour/day, and time limitations make it impossible to offer the visit to all the guests at the same time. The walking distance between the Field of Miracles in Pisa, and the bus parking area is approximately 15 minutes each way. Please note that on public holidays, most major stores will be closed; however, most leather and souvenir shops will be open. Since you’ll be visiting religious venues, please dress respectfully; no bare shoulders or shorts allowed.

CASSIS FISHING VILLAGE

Port: Provence (Marseille), France Tour Code: MRS_12

Greeks from Asia Minor founded Marseille around 600 BC. Today you can still see the influence of this ancient civilization as your guide points out the highlights of beautiful Marseille from your motorcoach. A scenic route takes you to the small town of Cassis nestled in a cove at the base of a medieval castle. The town’s narrow lanes will transport you back to the past. Its quaint harbor, the prettiest part of the village is framed by white limestone cliffs. This calm and relaxed setting is the total opposite of the noisy and busy harbor of Marseille. This tiny fishing port awaits your exploration. Stroll through the streets and enjoy the harbor at your leisure before returning to your ship. Note: Tour involves walking for approximately 2 hours on uneven ground and cobblestone. Not recommended for guests who are wheelchair confined. Public restrooms are available in Cassis. Due to new traffic regulations to protect the village of Cassis, no large motorcoaches are allowed to enter the harbor area. Guests must walk approximately half a mile up and down to reach Cassis center and little train. The town has put in place a shuttle service operated by a little train which hold usually up to 60 guests at a time. This shuttle service is public. When many visitors arrive at the same time; waiting time can occur which in turn could affect this tour. This shuttle takes guests to the old parking area in the center of town. The drive from the parking area where the shuttle drop-off point in town is takes approximately 10 minutes downhill or uphill to get back to the bus. For this reason we suggest that guests are aware that this tour involves strenuous walking.
