CONNECTING to COLLECTIONS PENNSYLVANIA a Five-Year Preservation Plan for Pennsylvania PROJECT OVERVIEW
CONNECTING TO COLLECTIONS PENNSYLVANIA a five-year preservation plan for Pennsylvania PROJECT OVERVIEW Imagining Our Future: Preserving Pennsylvania’s Collections, published in August 2009, includes an in-depth analysis of conditions and needs at Pennsylvania’s collecting institutions, a detailed preservation plan to improve collections care throughout the state, and a five-year implementation timetable (2010-2015). The analysis concludes that many of Pennsylvania’s most important historic holdings must be considered at risk. Millions of items comprise these collections, and the financial resources available to care for them are limited and shrinking. Pennsylvania is a state vibrant with world-class art museums, libraries, historic sites. Arts and culture play a substantial role in creating business, jobs, and bringing revenue into the state and stewardship of its artifacts is too important —to the state, to the people, to the history of country—to be ignored. This call to action is a rallying cry for all future generations of Pennsylvanians. With generous support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and in close partnership with three leading preservation organizations, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC), the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations (PFMHO), and LYRASIS, the Conservation Center for Arts & Historic Artifacts organized and led the assessment and planning process. The project was capably guided by a Task Force with representatives from the Office of (PA) Commonwealth Libraries, the Western Pennsylvania Museum Council, the Pennsylvania Caucus of the Mid- Atlantic Regional Archives Conference, Pennsylvania State University, the Philadelphia Area Consortium of Special Collections Libraries, the University of Pittsburgh, and Carnegie Mellon University. -

PENNSYLVANIA HERITAGE FOUNDATION NEWSLETTER FALL 2019 PAHERITAGE.ORG PHF Partners with The State Museum for Art of the State This past June, PHMC Commissioner Ophelia Chambliss and I had the honor of presenting Art of the State awards at the 52nd anniversary of the grand event that recognizes current achievements in the visual arts in Pennsylvania. The audito- rium at The State Museum in Harrisburg was crowded with talented persons and their families from all over the common- wealth. The art on display—some realistic, some abstract— thoughtfully, creatively and often provocatively portrayed our humanity and spoke to our common challenges and possibilities. This annual occurrence is a reminder to Pennsylvanians that this is our State Museum. This is not only a facility dedi- cated to preserving the artifacts, memorabilia and art of our commonwealth history but also a dynamic institution cele- brating the talents of this generation of Pennsylvanians. Whether touring the numerous exhibits at the museum or examining past and present works of art, I am reminded how fortunate we are as Pennsylvanians that we have this grand resource, our museum. Here we can bring our families to view, ponder and celebrate the history and arts brought forth from the creative and talented citizens of our commonwealth, past and present. The Pennsylvania Heritage Foundation is proud to be a philanthropic partner with this cherished institution and its many programs that serve the citizens of our entire state. We thank our members and supporters for joining us in our shared journey to educate and inform our citizenry of the grand stories and achievements of Pennsylvanians. -
Maritime Museum and Brig Niagara Tour
MARITIME MUSEUM AND BRIG NIAGARA TOUR COMMODORE OLIVER HAZARD PERRY ON HIS WAY TO HISTORY AND THE FLAGSHIP NIAGARA Kathie Walter has been very active in trying to provide the association with opportunities for a memorable weekend. She is a member of the Flagship Niagara League so she was able to get us discounted fees to visit the Erie Maritime Museum. This is her latest offer for those interested in seeing the museum and Brig NIAGARA on the same visit: On Friday, June 1st, Alpha Association is being offered a guided tour that will include the Erie Maritime Museum and the Flagship Niagara. It will take place at noontime and last about two hours. The cost per person will be $7.00 per person, a bargain for those interested. We were very fortunate that the Flagship Niagara will be at the museum during the weekend of the reunion. Much of the time, it is out touring the Great Lakes serving as an ambassador of Pennsylvania. THE HISTORY OF THE USS NIAGARA FLAGSHIP NIAGARA ‘CROSSING THE T’ MANEUVER Everyone recalls from their grade school text books that Commodore Perry became famous for defeating the British during the Battle of Lake Erie coining the phrase, “We have met the enemy, and they are ours.” Perry commanded a group of nine American warships who engaged a fleet of six British frigates off the coast of Ohio. Perry’s fleet was led by the ships USS LAWRENCE,(named after Captain James Lawrence, who had his own famous iconic plea as he was dying, ‘DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP’), and the USS NIAGARA. -

In 2001, Diane Reed, Chief of the Commission’s Publications and Sales Division proposed that a book be created telling the story of Pennsylvania during the Civil War using the vast holdings of the PHMC. In order to create the book, an overview of the PHMC Civil War holdings was necessary. A SIR collaborative project was funded early in 2002, and Dr. James P. Weeks of the Pennsylvania State University History Department was chosen to create the survey, working with Linda Ries of the Archives staff. -

Of Our Va Lue Heritage
The of Our Va lue Heritage Annual Report 2007–2008 Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission 2007–2008 Annual Report / PennsylvaniaPennsylvania Historical &Heritage Museum Commission Society® / www.phmc.state.pa.us From The Governor Pennsylvania is home to a number of treasures that embody the rich history of the commonwealth, our nation and our civilizations. You can find sites that reflect our religious diversity, as well as rural and urban landmarks that depict the agricultural and industrial heritage of these respective areas. Places like Philadelphia, Valley Forge and Gettysburg chronicle the birth of American democracy and draw visitors from around the world. Communities throughout Pennsylvania value their history and the work that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission does to help preserve these stories. Pennsylvania’s history is an asset to our economy as evidenced by the importance of heritage tourism as a major economic driver in the state’s economy. Without the historical resources of sustainable museums, well-preserved towns and cities, fascinating collections, and unique historical sites, Pennsylvania would not be a destination for millions of visitors who come to experience America’s past. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is entrusted with the stewardship of these resources on behalf of Pennsylvania’s 12.4 million residents. The value of PHMC’s work is measured in the educational experiences of families and children, the quality of life in communities with strong identities and distinctive landmarks, and the number of visitors who return again and again to understand and appreciate Pennsylvania’s story.
