Americans’ Responses to Nazism Through Cinema, Radio and Media” at the Writers Guild Theater in Beverly Hills on Nov. 15. Panelists, who discussed how Hollywood and leaders in entertainment and government battled for the hearts and minds of Americans, included moderator Patt Morrison (left), author, radio-television host and journalist; Daniel Greene (center), curator of USHMM’s “Americans and the Holocaust” exhibition; and Laurent Bouzereau (right), director and producer of the Netflix series “Five Came Back.” Stories about World War II and the persecution of Europe’s were a constant presence in American movie theaters and living rooms through- out the 1930-40s. Award-winning films such as “Mrs. Miniver,” “The Great Dictator” and “Casablanca” shaped Americans’ understanding of the Nazi threat, while newsreels and radio programs offered a brief glimpse into world events and the range of opinions on the war effort. Holocaust survivor who served on Museum of the Holocaust board dies Gregory McKay, a Holocaust survivor and board member of the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, died on Saturday, Nov. 17. McKay’s parents, Michael and Silvi McKay (originally Speelman), married in Amsterdam in September 1939, just three weeks after World War II began. The following year, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands. The McKays managed to hide, a task that became even more difficult when their son Gregory was born in 1942 in the attic of their home. Michael McKay, a doctor and professor, was active with the Dutch under- ground resistance. In January 1943, the family of three escaped from the Netherlands into Switzerland. Gregory McKay was carried across the bor- der in a black bag. His maternal grandparents also escaped to safety in Switzerland, but the rest of his relatives perished. After the war, the McKays settled in Los Angeles, where eventually Gregory McKay worked in investments. Silvi McKay and her son were both active in building LAMOTH’s permanent home in Pan Pacific Park. Many of their family’s artifacts, including the black bag in which Gregory McKay was carried, are on permanent display in the museum. Gregory McKay is survived by his partner Janis, three children, and his brother and sister-in-law. A memorial will be held at the museum on Monday, Dec. 17, at 3 p.m. LAMOTH is located at 100 The Grove Drive. For information, visit lamoth.org. Park Labrea News/Beverly Press 13 December 6, 2018
