Synopsis Prologue Mythical times. At night in the mountains, the three Norns, daughters of Erda, weave the rope of destiny. They tell how Wotan ordered the World Ash Tree, from which his spear was once cut, to be felled and its wood piled around Valhalla. The burning of the pyre will mark the end of the old order. Suddenly, the rope breaks. Their wisdom ended, the Norns descend into the earth. Dawn breaks on the Valkyries’ rock, and Siegfried and Brünnhilde emerge. Having cast protective spells on Siegfried, Brünnhilde sends him into the world to do heroic deeds. As a pledge of his love, Siegfried gives her the ring that he took from the dragon Fafner, and she offers her horse, Grane, in return. Siegfried sets off on his travels. Act I In the hall of the Gibichungs on the banks of the Rhine, Hagen advises his half- siblings, Gunther and Gutrune, to strengthen their rule through marriage. He suggests Brünnhilde as Gunther’s bride and Siegfried as Gutrune’s husband. Since only the strongest hero can pass through the fire on Brünnhilde’s rock, Hagen proposes a plan: A potion will make Siegfried forget Brünnhilde and fall in love with Gutrune. To win her, he will claim Brünnhilde for Gunther. When Siegfried’s horn is heard from the river, Hagen calls him ashore. Gutrune offers him the potion. Siegfried drinks and immediately confesses his love for her.Ð When Gunther describes the perils of winning his chosen bride, Siegfried offers to use the Tarnhelm to transform himself into Gunther.

  • George Frideric Handel German Baroque Era Composer (1685-1759)
Hey Kids, Meet George Frideric Handel German Baroque Era Composer (1685-1759) George Frideric Handel was born on February 23, 1685 in the North German province of Saxony, in the same year as Baroque composer Johann Sebastian Bach. George's father wanted him to be a lawyer, though music had captivated his attention. His mother, in contrast, supported his interest in music, and he was allowed to take keyboard and music composition lessons. His aunt gave him a harpsichord for his seventh birthday which Handel played whenever he had the chance. In 1702 Handel followed his father's wishes and began his study of law at the University of Halle. After his father's death in the following year, he returned to music and accepted a position as the organist at the Protestant Cathedral. In the next year he moved to Hamburg and accepted a position as a violinist and harpsichordist at the opera house. It was there that Handel's first operas were written and produced. In 1710, Handel accepted the position of Kapellmeister to George, Elector of Hanover, who was soon to be King George I of Great Britain. In 1712 he settled in England where Queen Anne gave him a yearly income. In the summer of 1717, Handel premiered one of his greatest works, Water Music, in a concert on the River Thames. The concert was performed by 50 musicians playing from a barge positioned closely to the royal barge from which the King listened. It was said that King George I enjoyed it so much that he requested the musicians to play the suite three times during the trip! By 1740, Handel completed his most memorable work - the Messiah.

  • IN SUMMER Lucerne Is a Wagner City
Der Ring des Nibelungen IN SUMMER Lucerne is a Wagner city. For six years – from 1866 to 1872 – the com- poser resided at the Villa Tribschen. This was a decisive period for him artistically as well as personally. It was here that he completed Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and resumed work on The Ring of the Nibelung, composing both the third act of Siegfried and Götterdäm- merung. Wagner’s Lucerne years also represented a turning point in his personal life. He moved into his new home on Lake Lucerne with Cosima von Bülow, whom he then married on 25 August 1870 in the Protestant parish church. And it was in Tribschen that two of the couple’s three children – their daughter Eva and son Siegfried – were born. To mark the composer’s 200th birthday, LUCERNE FESTIVAL is presenting the first complete performance of theRing cycle in the Wagner city of Lucerne, with the English conductor Jonathan Nott, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, and internationally acclaimed Wagner singers, including Albert Dohmen as Wotan, the ruler of the gods, Petra Lang making her role debut as Brünnhilde, Torsten Kerl as Siegfried, Klaus Florian Vogt in the role of Siegmund, and the Russian bass Mikhail Petrenko in a threefold assignment as Fafner, Hunding, and Hagen. This concert presentation of the epoch-making work will enable us to focus on Wagner the musical revolutionary. The highly acclaimed acoustics of the KKL Lucerne’s Salle blanche concert hall will bring out the sonic details and nuances of Wagner’s astounding orchestration with a transparency that has not been heard before.

  • 'Dream Job: Next Exit?'
Understanding Bach, 9, 9–24 © Bach Network UK 2014 ‘Dream Job: Next Exit?’: A Comparative Examination of Selected Career Choices by J. S. Bach and J. F. Fasch BARBARA M. REUL Much has been written about J. S. Bach’s climb up the career ladder from church musician and Kapellmeister in Thuringia to securing the prestigious Thomaskantorat in Leipzig.1 Why was the latter position so attractive to Bach and ‘with him the highest-ranking German Kapellmeister of his generation (Telemann and Graupner)’? After all, had their application been successful ‘these directors of famous court orchestras [would have been required to] end their working relationships with professional musicians [take up employment] at a civic school for boys and [wear] “a dusty Cantor frock”’, as Michael Maul noted recently.2 There was another important German-born contemporary of J. S. Bach, who had made the town’s shortlist in July 1722—Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688–1758). Like Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767), civic music director of Hamburg, and Christoph Graupner (1683–1760), Kapellmeister at the court of Hessen-Darmstadt, Fasch eventually withdrew his application, in favour of continuing as the newly- appointed Kapellmeister of Anhalt-Zerbst. In contrast, Bach, who was based in nearby Anhalt-Köthen, had apparently shown no interest in this particular vacancy across the river Elbe. In this article I will assess the two composers’ positions at three points in their professional careers: in 1710, when Fasch left Leipzig and went in search of a career, while Bach settled down in Weimar; in 1722, when the position of Thomaskantor became vacant, and both Fasch and Bach were potential candidates to replace Johann Kuhnau; and in 1730, when they were forced to re-evaluate their respective long-term career choices.

Music City Dresden Program # 3 „Gloria in Excelsis Deo“: A Century of Catholic Church Music at the Dresden Court Greetings from Bonn, Germany, for another program on the musical heritage of the city of Dresden. I’m Michael Rothe. It has taken sixty years for the Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady, to rise in new splendor from the rubble and ashes into which it sank during the infamous firebombing that consumed the entire city in February of 1945. 2005 is the year of the rededication of that glorious landmark, and we mark the occasion with this broadcast series from Deutsche Welle Radio, “Music City Dresden.“ Today we’ll survey a century of Catholic church music at the Dresden court, and we begin with this movement from an early 18th century setting of the Magnificat by Johann David Heinichen. Johann David Heinichen (1683-1729) Magnificat in A Major: 6th movement: Sicut erat in principio 1:50 Rheinische Kantorei, Das kleine Konzert Cond: Hermann Max LC 08748, Capriccio 10 557, (Track 20) The region ruled by the Saxon princes from the seat of their court in Dresden had long been Protestant. But around the turn of the 18th century, Catholicism found its way into the city, quietly, as if on tiptoes. That all had very much to do with the Saxon Elector Frederick Augustus I, who came to be known as Augustus the Strong. Augustus converted to Roman Catholicism in 1697. His entire family soon followed course. For the popular sovereign, who had a reputation as something of a skirt-chaser, it wasn’t a matter of religious fervor, but power politics.

MOZART’S PIANO Program Notes by Charlotte Nediger J.C. BACH SYMPHONY IN G MINOR, OP. 6, NO. 6 Of Johann Sebastian Bach’s many children, four enjoyed substantial careers as musicians: Carl Philipp Emanuel and Wilhelm Friedemann, born in Weimar to Maria Barbara; and Johann Christoph Friedrich and Johann Christian, born some twenty years later in Leipzig to Anna Magdalena. The youngest son, Johann Christian, is often called “the London Bach.” He was by far the most travelled member of the Bach family. After his father’s death in 1750, the fifteen-year-old went to Berlin to live and study with his brother Emanuel. A fascination with Italian opera led him to Italy four years later. He held posts in various centres in Italy (even converting to Catholicism) before settling in London in 1762. There he enjoyed considerable success as an opera composer, but left a greater mark by organizing an enormously successful concert series with his compatriot Carl Friedrich Abel. Much of the music at these concerts, which included cantatas, symphonies, sonatas, and concertos, was written by Bach and Abel themselves. Johann Christian is regarded today as one of the chief masters of the galant style, writing music that is elegant and vivacious, but the rather dark and dramatic Symphony in G Minor, op. 6, no. 6 reveals a more passionate aspect of his work. J.C. Bach is often cited as the single most important external influence on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart synthesized the wide range of music he encountered as a child, but the one influence that stands out is that of J.C.
