TWENTY– SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ST. DENIS 10-06-2019 A message from Fr. John

THE FEAST OF ST. DENIS

The feast day of St. Denis, the patron saint of our parish, is on Wednesday, October 9; and we will celebrate his feast at our three daily Masses (at 6:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., and 6:30 p.m.). Please join us that day as we pray and ask St. Denis to intercede on behalf of our parish.

Tom Berntsen, a long-time parishioner and a Pastor’s Award recipient, was inspired by the upcoming feast day to prepare the following short biographical sketch to help us learn more about St. Denis.

The statue of St. Denis in the sanctuary of our parish, on the right side of the altar.

St. Denis was born early in the 3rd century A.D. and died shortly after 250 A.D. He was the first bishop of Paris, and is the patron saint of France and Paris. Although little is known about his early life, St. Denis’s extraordinary acts of faith and courage as an adult are well-documented.

During the 3rd century, Christianity was suffering terribly under the persecution of the Roman Emperor Decius; and the Church of Gaul (present-day France) incurred heavy losses under his rule. Around 250 A.D., Pope Fabian sent Bishop Denis along with a few other missionary bishops to Gaul on a difficult assignment. He instructed them to restore the Church to its former flourishing condition.

Bishop Denis and his inseparable companions—Rusticus, a priest, and Eleutherius, a deacon—arrived in the neighborhood of the present-day city of Paris, settled on an island in the Seine River, and built a church. At that church, Bishop Denis’s fearless and indefatigable preaching of the gospel led to countless conversions; and his passion for the Gospel reignited the Church.

Bishop Denis’s success eventually aroused the anger and envy of the heathen priests in Gaul. They incited the populace against him, and petitioned the governor to put a stop by force to his teaching. Shortly thereafter, Bishop Denis and his companions were arrested.

The three men were brutally tortured, but persevered in their faith. All three were finally beheaded; and according to legend, after his execution, St. Denis’s corpse rose again and carried the head for some distance.

The following century the Roman Empire began to crumble and soon fell, never to rise again. By contrast, the teaching and passion of St. Denis still flourishes 1800 years later, just as it did in the 3rd century.
