KKS Lech Poznań know that defeat at home against RC Deportivo La Coruña will quite likely mean the end of their UEFA Cup campaign, and will be determined to continue their fine goalscoring form at the Miejski Stadium on Matchday 4. • Lech lost 2-1 at PFC CSKA Moskva on 27 November, a result that confirmed the Russian side's passage to the last 32. They visit Feyenoord in the last set of group-stage fixtures, and would dearly love to do so with a few more points on the board. • Deportivo beat the Rotterdam side 3-0 on Matchday 3 to dispel the memories of their opening loss by the same margin at CSKA. Should they beat Lech, they will be sure of a place in the last 16. • Lech have never come up against Deportivo in either of their previous incarnations. • The Polish side were previously known as KS Amica , but they changed their name and moved to Poznan in May 2006, with the club that had been playing as Lech Poznań being dissolved. • The original Lech played four games against Spanish sides, with their reading W1 D2 L1. Their home games ended in a win and a draw. • Amica also played Liga teams four times, but lost all four games, home and away. • Lech coach last faced Spanish opposition in the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League when his Wisła Kraków side lost 4-3 at home and 1-0 away against FC in the third qualifying round. • His RTS Widzew Łódź outfit fared no better against Club Atlético de in the 1996/97 UEFA Champions League group stage, losing 4-1 at home and 1-0 in Spain. • Smuda is thus looking to avoid defeat against Spanish opponents for the first time. • Deportivo coach Miguel Ángel Lotina is awaiting his first competitive game against a Polish side. • Lech are unbeaten in four home games in Europe this season, and have been on impressive goalscoring form at the Miejski Stadium, scoring 16 times in the course of those matches. • Deportivo have lost their last two UEFA Cup away games without scoring a goal. • Lech's Manuel Arboleda, Sławomir Peszko and Zlatko Tanevski are all within a booking of a one-match ban along with Deportivo's Andres Guardado and .

Group winners will be paired with third-placed sides from other UEFA Cup sections, while second-placed finishers will be drawn against one of the eight clubs who finished third in the UEFA Champions League groups. The UEFA Cup evolved from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, and was first contested as the UEFA Cup in 1971/72. Next season the UEFA Cup will be reborn as the UEFA Europa League. The new name heralds major changes to the competition, which will have a new 48-team group stage with centralised marketing of broadcast rights, a presenting sponsor and an official matchball in addition to centralised sponsorship from the knockout stage and a new logo and visual identity. • Format: The UEFA Cup group stage draw in Nyon on 7 October saw the 40 teams divided into eight groups of five. Clubs from the same association could not be drawn into the same group. Each club plays home and away alternately in its group. Three points are awarded for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a defeat. If two or more teams are equal on points on completion of the group matches, the following criteria are applied to determine the rankings. a) superior goal difference from all group matches played; b) higher number of goals scored; c) higher number of goals scored away; d) higher number of wins; e) higher number of away wins; f) higher coefficient points accumulated by the club in question, as well as its association, over the previous five seasons. The eight group-winners, the eight runners-up, and the eight third-ranked teams from the group stage qualify for the Round of 32, along with the eight sides that finish third in the eight UEFA Champions League groups, with ties to be played over two legs on 18/19 and 26 February 2009. The clubs that finish this stage in fourth and fifth position are eliminated from UEFA club competition for the season. This year's UEFA Cup final is in Istanbul on 20 May 2009. • Disciplinary information: As a rule, a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. The Control and Disciplinary Body is entitled to augment this punishment. In the case of repeated cautions, a player is suspended for one match after three cautions in three different matches, as well as following any subsequent odd-numbered caution (fifth, seventh, ninth, etc). Single yellow cards and pending suspensions are always carried forward either to the next stage of the competition or to another club competition in the current season. • Locally-trained players rule: In February 2005, UEFA announced the 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2007/08, at least six places will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy of which half can be players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. In 2006/07, the number of locally-trained players required began at four but the current six will rise to eight in 2008/09, with up to half of each figure allowed to be association trained. A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is one who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association between the age of 15 and 21. • Player registration: UEFA regulations state that for all UEFA Cup matches from the start of the Round of 32, a club may register a maximum of three new eligible players within their squad of 25 for the remaining matches in the current competition. One player from the above quota of three who has played UEFA club competition matches for another competing club in the current season may exceptionally be registered, provided that the player has not been fielded by another club in the UEFA Cup this season or by a club that has transferred from the UEFA Champions League to the UEFA Cup following the group stage. • Disclaimer: Although UEFA has taken all reasonable care that the information contained within this document is accurate at the time of publication, no representation or guarantee (including liability towards third parties), expressed or implied, is made as to its accuracy, reliability or completeness.
