Hook-Ups and Train Wrecks: Contextual Parameters and the Coordination of Jazz Interactions Nicholas P. Dempsey Department of Sociology University of Chicago 1009 E. 57th St. Chicago, IL 60637 Forthcoming in Symbolic Interaction 31 (1 or 2), 2008 Contextual Parameters Hook-Ups and Train Wrecks: Contextual Parameters and the Coordination of Jazz Interactions Abstract: This paper enumerates and discusses the importance of several parameters of context integral to jazz musicians’ ability to hear musical signs as meaningful, such as performers’ individual backgrounds and the various other styles of music available in the aural landscape, and how those parameters influence what the musicians play. Through discussion of several examples from an ongoing ethnography of jazz jam sessions, findings are presented that suggest that context is constituted by several variables, that different variables may become salient at different times, and that different interactants vary in their ability to attend to these variables. This study thus extends and elaborates frame analysis by showing that, while an interaction frame of the sort described by Goffman (1974) may perdure, it is subject to change, and the nature of the context it provides for interactions can change whenever a new interaction is initiated. 1 Contextual Parameters “Hooking up,” “Gelling,” “Grooving”—Regardless of what we call it, when human beings engage in successful joint action, we derive pleasure from closely coordinating our actions with those taken by our co-participants. Whether we choose to work together with a group of others, or we are thrown into a group by the exigencies of work, family, war, or sport, we want the activity at hand to proceed smoothly.

  • Marcus Strickland
MARCUS STRICKLAND BIO When last we heard from Brooklyn composer-saxophonist Marcus Strickland, on 2016’s Nihil Novi, he was testing his mettle at hip-hop-inspired production, blending genres with a little help from album producer Meshell Ndegeocello. In the process, something big happened: “I was no longer concerned about what is or isn’t jazz,” he says. “I got rid of those barriers and was like, ‘Well, who the fuck am I?’ That’s when I started on this path.” On his thrilling new LP, People of the Sun (Blue Note/Revive Music), Strickland blazes down that trail fully at the helm of his music—performing, writing, and producing with his outrageously able Twi-Life band on deck—even as he sonically and socially traces the African diaspora from present to past in an effort to unpack his identity. “I’m thinking about where we came from,” says Strickland, “and how that clashes and goes hand in hand with what we’ve created here as Black Americans.” The result is an album that’s busy and beautiful, inventive and contemplative, an amalgam of influences from West Africa (griot culture, Afrobeat, percussion) and America (post-bop, funk-soul, beat music) performed in the key of revelation. Of course, genre doesn’t mean much to Strickland—”Trying to fit into one has absolutely nothing to do with the progress of music,” he declares—but origin does. And though his epiphany about not conforming to a particular sound may be recent, his roots and career have been bending toward that all along.

En cualquier caso allá vamos: We dance even if there’s no radio. We drink at funerals. We talk too much and laugh too loud and live too large and, frankly, we’re suspicious of others who don’t. (Chris Rose, escritor y periodista).

  • Stevie Wonder's Musical Politics During the 1970S and 1980S a Thesis
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Wonderful Words: Stevie Wonder’s Musical Politics During the 1970s and 1980s A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in African American Studies by Sandra Marie Kilman 2017 © Copyright by Sandra Marie Kilman 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Wonderful Words: Stevie Wonder’s Musical Politics During the 1970s and 1980s by Sandra Marie Kilman Master of Arts in African American Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Robin Davis Gibran Kelley, Chair The problem of racial injustice in the United States continued to plague the nation during the 1970s despite the gains made by the Civil Rights Movement during the preceding decades. Under Republican administrations during the 1970s and 1980s, working Americans encountered new financial challenges as the lion’s share of economic growth benefitted the wealthiest citizens. As socially and politically conscious popular music faded in popularity, Stevie Wonder continued to express his concerns about the obstacles to the promise of freedom and equality that many Americans continued to face. This paper examines four songs, written and performed by Wonder - “Living for the City,” “You Haven’t Done Nothing,” “Happy Birthday,” and “It’s Wrong,” - to track the trajectory of his commentary from local, community-based issues to national, political topics and, finally, to international causes. ii The thesis of Sandra Marie Kilman is approved. Richard Yarborough Shana Redmond Robin Davis Gibran Kelley, Committee Chair University of California, Los Angeles 2017 iii Acknowledgments This paper is dedicated to my family, whose love has sustained me throughout my life.
