ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS First and foremost, I would like to thank to my advisor, Darren Purcell. This dissertation would not have been possible without his expert guidance and friendship. I would also like to thank to my committee members: Patrick Meirick, Laurel Smith, Karl Offen, and Robert Rundstrom for their assistance and encouragement during my course of studies and their availability as I wrote this dissertation. My graduate years and studies would not be the same without the social and academic challenges and diversions provided by my colleagues and friends, in particular, Matthew McNair, Lukas Sandve, Naci Dilekli, Kristin Collier, Ibrahim Hakki Guntay, Mehmet Ozkan, Arif Keceli, Burcu Degirmen, Anna Galiatsatos, Ersin Ozbenli, Bora Yalcin, Sezer Sevinc, Lutfiye Hocioglu, Hasan Baris Serce, Ceyda Gunsel, Tugba Turnaoglu, Bekir Koksal, and Ahmet Aker. I am also in debt to my anonymous focus group participants and survey respondents. I want to thank them for their important contribution to this study, thus my sincere gratitude goes to them. But my big thanks goes out to my parents, Guldan and Ilyas, and my brothers Metin, Abdullah, Fatih and Nurullah Anaz. Without their life-long support, I would not be where I am right now. iv TABLE OF CONTENTS Acknowledgements.……………………………………………………………………...iv Table of Contents………………………………………………………………………....v List of Tables……….……………………………..………………………………….......x List of Figures…………………………………..………………………………………xii Abstract…………………………………………………………………….…………....xv CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION ...................................................................................... 1 1.1 INTRODUCTION........................................................................................................................... 1 1.2 VALLEY OF THE WOLVES-PALESTINE ................................................................................................... 5 1.3 AIM .......................................................................................................................................... 10 1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS ............................................................................................................. 10 1.5 RESEARCH INTEREST ................................................................................................................ 11 1.6 ORGANIZATION OF DISSERTATION ............................................................................................ 13 1.7 GENERAL CONCEPTS AND THEORIES IN FILM GEOGRAPHIES ..................................................... 14 1.7.1 The discussion of why and how film became important for geographers ..................... 15 1.7.2 The uses of film in geography classrooms..................................................................... 21 1.7.3 Political economy of film geographies .......................................................................... 23 1.8 SUMMARY ................................................................................................................................ 31 CHAPTER 2: NATIONAL CINEMA, TURKISH FILM INDUSTRY AND THE FEATURES OF TURKISH MEDIA .............................................................................. 33 2.1 INTRODUCTION......................................................................................................................... 33 2.2 NATIONAL CINEMA AND NATIONALISM .................................................................................... 35 2.3 TURKISH CINEMA ..................................................................................................................... 40 v 2.4 THE IMPORTANCE OF SELECTED TURKISH MASS MEDIA FORMS TO VALLEY OF THE WOLVES- PALESTINE ..................................................................................................................................... 58 2.4.1 Television ...................................................................................................................... 60 2.4.2 Internet .......................................................................................................................... 65 2.5 SUMMARY ................................................................................................................................ 69 CHAPTER 3: UNDERSTANDING THE VISUAL TURN, POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY, POPULAR CULTURE, TURKISH GEOPOLITICS AND AUDIENCE GEOGRAPHY ................................................................................................................ 71 3.1 INTRODUCTION......................................................................................................................... 71 3.2 THE VISUAL TURN, POLITICAL GEOGRAPHY AND POPULAR CULTURE ....................................... 72 3.3 WHAT IS CRITICAL GEOPOLITICS? • GSC Films: S-Z
GSC Films: S-Z Saboteur 1942 Alfred Hitchcock 3.0 Robert Cummings, Patricia Lane as not so charismatic love interest, Otto Kruger as rather dull villain (although something of prefigure of James Mason’s very suave villain in ‘NNW’), Norman Lloyd who makes impression as rather melancholy saboteur, especially when he is hanging by his sleeve in Statue of Liberty sequence. One of lesser Hitchcock products, done on loan out from Selznick for Universal. Suffers from lackluster cast (Cummings does not have acting weight to make us care for his character or to make us believe that he is going to all that trouble to find the real saboteur), and an often inconsistent story line that provides opportunity for interesting set pieces – the circus freaks, the high society fund-raising dance; and of course the final famous Statue of Liberty sequence (vertigo impression with the two characters perched high on the finger of the statue, the suspense generated by the slow tearing of the sleeve seam, and the scary fall when the sleeve tears off – Lloyd rotating slowly and screaming as he recedes from Cummings’ view). Many scenes are obviously done on the cheap – anything with the trucks, the home of Kruger, riding a taxi through New York. Some of the scenes are very flat – the kindly blind hermit (riff on the hermit in ‘Frankenstein?’), Kruger’s affection for his grandchild around the swimming pool in his Highway 395 ranch home, the meeting with the bad guys in the Soda City scene next to Hoover Dam. The encounter with the circus freaks (Siamese twins who don’t get along, the bearded lady whose beard is in curlers, the militaristic midget who wants to turn the couple in, etc.) is amusing and piquant (perhaps the scene was written by Dorothy Parker?), but it doesn’t seem to relate to anything.

  • Video Terrorism
VIDEO TERRORISM 9/11 (2002) This heartfelt documentary was created by award-winning French filmmakers Jules and Gedeon Naudet, who simply set out to make a movie about a rookie NYC fireman and ended up filming the tragic event that changed our lives forever. The program includes additional footage and interviews with the heroic firefighters, rescue workers and the Naudet brothers, providing exclusive insight to their extraordinary firsthand experience of the day's events. 9/11: Press for Truth (2006) Based partly on Paul Thompson's book The Terror Timeline, this documentary chronicles the efforts of family members who lost loved ones in the 9/11 attack as they hound powerful officials to uncover the truth. The families succeed in generating an independent investigation, but more questions than answers emerge as the film spotlights secretive politicians, buried news items, government press conferences lacking substance and more. 444 Days to Freedom: What Really Happened in Iran (1997) Relive the dramatic events surrounding the infamous 444-day Iranian hostage crisis when, in 1979, a gang of radical Islamic students demanding the return of the Shah took prisoner Tehran's U.S. embassy staff. Despite the captors' eventual retreat, Jimmy Carter's presidency was brought to ruin and America's spirit was broken. Using rare archival footage, interviews and revealing documents, this film chronicles the hostages' harrowing ordeal. 60 Minutes - In Search of Bin Laden (September 25, 2005) Four years after 9/11, why hasn't Osama bin Laden been caught? Steve Kroft interviews Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf, who says bin Laden is still revered by many in his country.

An Advertising Supplement to The Washington Post 25TH ANNUAL FILMFEST DC APRIL 7 – 17, 2011 WASHINGTON DC INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL WELCOME TO FILMFEST DC! A world of Stories... a world of filmmakers… Welcome to the 25th anniversary of Filmfest DC... for people who love movies! We are proud to reach this quarter-century landmark of introducing Washington, DC to the consistently Photo: Chad Evans Wyatt Chad Evans Photo: provocative and innovative films of international cinema. Filmmakers are storytellers — and what rich stories they have to tell! This year we have an extraordinary array of films from Scandinavia to South Korea and from Italy to Iran. They all tell us stories that perplex us with life’s riddles, dazzle us with color and song, and inspire us with quiet dignity, grace, and beauty. They let us peer into the seductive world of Spanish flamenco dance, the psyche of a Corsican hotel maid hooked on chess, the innocence of Danish recruits negotiating the battlefields of Afghanistan, the longing of the young Indian woman in search of her father, the adrenaline rush of the Austrian marathoner who robs bank as a hobby — and that’s just a small taste of the richness and variety of this year’s films! Once again, I would like to thank the many dedicated people who have shared their time and talents with Filmfest DC. The University of the District of Columbia is our major sponsor. Filmfest DC greatly appreciates the generous contributions of all our sponsors, patrons, numerous volunteers, local businesses, and diplomatic community. Their support is vital to the festival’s success and shows the enduring contribution the festival makes to our city’s cultural space.
