2010 Human Rights Report: Tanzania Page 1 of 30 Home » Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs » Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor » Releases » Human Rights Reports » 2010 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices » Africa » Tanzania 2010 Human Rights Report: Tanzania BUREAU OF DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND LABOR 2010 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices April 8, 2011 The United Republic of Tanzania, with a population of 41 million, is a multiparty republic consisting of the mainland and the semiautonomous Zanzibar archipelago, whose main islands are Unguja and Pemba. The union is headed by a president who is also the head of government; its unicameral legislative body is the National Assembly (parliament). Zanzibar, although part of the union government, has its own president, court system, and legislature, and exercises considerable autonomy. Tanzania held its fourth multiparty general elections on October 31, in which voters on both Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar elected a union president and their respective representatives in the union legislature. President Kikwete, the incumbent Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM) candidate, was reelected union president with 61.7 percent of the vote. The national elections were generally peaceful, but there were several protests in urban areas associated with the slow pace of reporting election results. In Zanzibar the October elections proceeded peacefully after a power-sharing agreement was reached between the ruling CCM party and the opposition Civic United Front (CUF). In a July 31 referendum, Zanzibaris voted to amend the constitution to allow for a unity government. In October the Zanzibar electorate elected Ali Mohamed Shein, the immediate past union vice president, as president of Zanzibar with 50.1 percent of the vote and also elected members of its House of Representatives. -

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract This paper presents results from preliminary assessments in Ngasamo ward, Busega district in Simiyu region. The main objective was to assess cultural heritage assets in some areas of Bariadi district in Simiyu region. Specific objectives of the assessment are to identify tangible cultural her- itage resources in Simiyu region; to identify intangible cultural heritage resources in Simiyu re- gion; and to provide suggestions for pertinent protection, conservation and presentation of cul- tural heritage resources. The assessment was carried out through surveys that included docu- mentation together with records for Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates per surveyed locality; key informant interviews; and Focus Group Discussion. Results from the assessment re- vealed several worship areas that include immovable physical objects associated to ritual perfor- mance places. For example, wells like Luhuhi in Ilula village, Nkindwa biye tree in Ilula village, Magahi well in Isenge village, Isangijo hill at Isenge village, Dutwa well in Isenge village, Nyabusalu well in Igalukilo village and similar others are worship places that were revealed by informants. -

The effective management of development of this region depends on the interest of many different stakeholders who share a common concern to alleviate poverty of the rural population in those seven districts. This Shinyanga CWIQ report gives an overview of the magnitude of poverty in communities. Also it gives a representative view on utilisation and satisfaction of our rural population with the social services provided in the Shinyanga rural districts provided by the Government and the Non Government agencies. This book is unique as it is the first comprehensive survey of its kind to be administered in Shinyanga Region. The book should be appreciated as a baseline survey to measure changes overtime in household welfare and satisfaction levels with social services provided in result of development policies implemented. I hope that this book will contribute to a better understanding of the daily problems of our rural population. The Government, Non-Government Organisations and other stakeholders being concerned in development of the rural population are challenged to enhance collaboration in support of a comprehensive response to overcome the developmental constraints in the context of National priorities and policies.
