You may recall inour last issuewe told you how an ex-works MGB had been found in Houston and had been restored by Forristall's GT Cars under the direction of Steve Forristall. The car BMO 541B is featured on the cover of this issue. The history of this car as a works entry is well documented but briefly can be summarized as follows: 1964.LE MANS, #37 driven by Paddy Hopkirk and Andrew Hedges finished 19th overall and 2nd in class. The car was also awarded the "Motor" trophy for being the highest placed British car. A feature was the fact that the MGB covered 2392 miles in the 24 hours at an average speed of 99.9 miles per hour, causing John Thornley to comment that this speed made better publicity than if they'd averaged 100 MPH! The car had few problems except for when one of the mechanics broke the filler cap off the huge 30 gallon gas tank, but this problem was easily overcome by walking down the pit road and borrowing one from the Sunbeam Tiger crew! 1964.TOURDE FRANCE.BM0541B #I53 driven by Andrew Hedges and John Sprinzel suffered head gasket failure. Abingdon's Den Green tried to effect a repair using plastic metal but the MGB had to be retired. 1965.SEBRING.ln March of this year M.Brennan and F. Morrell, changing drivers and refueling every 2 112 hours, took the MGB #49 to 25th overall and 2nd in class but this was not the whole story by a long way! We can do no better than quote from the publicity issued by MG after the race: "SEBRING 65-(or sometimes it rains when you're out driving!)"- 5.25PM.Saturday March 27th, the race is 7hrs.25 mins old and MG have the situation well in hand. MGB #49 is outfooting everything in its class except the factory prepared, bigger- engined Porsche. Both #49 and its running mate #48 are well ahead of TR-4 and a couple of XKE's. 5.30PM.RAIN!!:close to 45 minutes of the heaviest downpour since the Ark. Some machines slowto6 MPH!-other quit entirely.MG have thesituation well in hand.MGB #49 is outfooting everything in its class except for the factory prepared, bigger- engined Porsche. Both #49 and its running mate #48 are well ahead of TR-4 and a couple of XKE's! 10.00PM.Darkne.s~-waterhas been spun off the track. Chequered flags slash the night.MG have the situation well in hand! MGB outfoots everything in its class except the factory prepared, bigger-engined Porsche. Both #49 and its running mate #48 are well ahead of TR-4 and a couple of XKE's! Theorder of finish? Sixof theseven BMCcars entered finished and you will notice the the MG runners were so much more than temperamental fair weather trackcars: they are tough talented, all-round performers, bred to road or race course-rain or shine! So there you have the competition history of BMO 541Bbut that is not the whole story as we shall see in the next issue of the "MGB Driver"!

MC TRIVIA QUIZ - A little different this issue!

Way back in 1989 'Thoroughbred & Classic Car' magazine ran a contest to win an MGB built with a Heritage bodyshell. Over a period of three months they set a series of questions to test your knowledge of the MGB, its history and development-some of you may recall this contest which attracted thousands of entries, but for those who missed it; we propose to run the questions again over the next three issues of the 'MGB Driver' this time with the questions shuffled from the original order in which they were set by Wilson McComb. So here goes! Answers on page 43.

1. Who was the head of the MG design office in 1973? 2. When were black wiper arms standardized on the MGB? 3. Who drove a works MGB in the 1963 Tour de France? 4. How many examples of the Special Anniversary MGB GT were built? 5. Which S.U.model preceded the HIF4 on home market MGB's? 6. At what average speed did an MGB win the 'Motor' trophy at Le Mans. 7. And what year was that? 8. When was the 500,000th MGB completed? IN THE BRITISH CAR BUSINESS 9. On what grounds did Renault accuse MG of infringement of copyright? 10. This month we have a contribution from Bob Allen who tells us all about: MGB WATER PUMP REPLACEMENT. Recently while traveling home from vacation my MGB developed a grinding noise from somewhere under the hood. Although not loud the noise was constant and could be heard with the stereo on. About 112 mile from home the temperature gauge began climbing. I pulled into the driveway, switched off the engine and saw Moore MG's the temp.gauge shoot up to hot. Phew!-only just made it. Sales, Restoratwns & Parts I opened the hood and saw the whole of the engine compartment dripping in water and anti-freeze. Upon closer inspection I noticed water dripping from the water pump, so the next day I obtained a new pump from my local MG distributor 781 7 Loisdale Road and started the job to replace the old one. Bldg. 814 First I drained what water there was from the radiator, removed the hoses and Springfield, VA 22150 took out the radiator. This makes access to the pump far easier, unless you own a (703) 550-0231 Dale E. Moore later type of MGB. Having taken off the fan belt I removed the four bolts that hold the fan blade and removed that. Here I also took the opportunity to renew the rubber grommets on the fan bladeas thesetend toperish and makethe fan rattle(sometimes giving the impression the 'B' is pinging!) Next out were the four water pump bolts and the pump itself. The spacer and the fan pulley were stuck fast on the pump but a sharp tap with a hammer soon sorted that out! Connell's I inspected theold pumpto find that theinternal bearings had shattered, sowhen the pulley turned the pump didn't-no wonder the temperature gauge went off the MG Service clock! I bolted on the new pump with the new gasket and fitted the spacer, fan pulley and fan belt. I also reverse flushed the radiator while I had it out,and was amazed at how much 'gunge' came out. The rad. was put back in and the hoses were refitted 2302 East 38th Street and I checked all the bolts and fittings to make sure I hadn't missed anything. Indianapolis, IN 46218 Afterthe radiatorwas filled with thecorrect amount of watertanti-freeze Istarted (West side of Wilson's Auto Parts) the engine and checked for leaks. None appeared, but 1 took the MGB for a short test Phone: 31 7 1 545-6108 drive round the block just to make sure. Then another hour was spent with gunk and elbow grease to make the engine bay respectable again.

JIM & ESTHER UDKLER 24027 CROSSLAND Owners SAN ANTONIO, TX 78264 DON HAYTER - The man who styled the MCB In our Register letters pages this month we are honoured to print a letter we received from Don Hayter. Some of our younger viewers may be asking 'Don Who?'!! Well read on because all of us owe this guy a lot! Don Hayter was born in 1927, left school in 1942 and went to work at Pressed Steel in Coventry - the company which later built MGB bodyshells. At the time, Pressed Steel were concentrating on war work producing large aircraft assemblies. Don worked in thedrawing office turningdesign drawings into production drawings. When hostilities ceased Pressed Steel returned to automotive work and Hayter continued to work on complex designs including the Jaguar XK120 and the MG Magnette. His job was to interpret existing schemes and streamline them so the panels would come off the tools properly. In 1954 Don moved to as a draftsman and one of his first styling assignments was a new radiator shape for the Aston Martin DB3 which came out in 1957. Aston Martin decided to make a move to Newport Pagnell, but Don was not keen on moving and as hesays-"I wondered about MG and wrote to them on spec. Funnily enough they'd been advertisingrecently and hadn't received any replies! So I went to see Syd Enever and got the job of Chief Body Draughtsman" So in February 1956 Don went to Abingdon where his first job was to design the detachable panels in the wheel arches of the MGATwin Cam to permit access to the Don Hayter, left, in 1974 receiving a copy of Wilson McCornb'.~The Story of the MG exhaust pipes, after which he styled the MGA Coupe that ran at Le Mans in 1960. Once the 'B' got the go ahead it was largely Don's task to make the car buildable. He also finalised the dash design, the distinctive windscreen and the top. He also(at a very late stage!) had to redesign the rear end at a time when the more complex systems had been rejected and it was decided to go to cart spring rear suspension. Hayter took over the projects development department in 1968 and among these projects were SSV-l(which we covered in our first issue), the mid-engined AD021 prototype and the shell of the lightweight MGC GT Racer; the GTS. When Roy Brocklehurst left MG in July 1973 Don Hayter succeeded him as Chief Engineer and in that capacity he was deeply involved in all MG's safety legislation work, including the'B's switch to rubber bumpers the fitment of which upset the MGBs looks, which Don who styled the car back in 1958 readily admits. Don was also at the helm when the V8 was introduced and recalls that early on "We just couldn't get enough of the V8 engines-the most we ever managed was 48 in one weekn! Came October 1980, and the closure of Abingdon, and on December 12th 1980 Don Hayter was one of the last three people to leave the MG Works after 24 years at the 'Home of British Sportscars'. Now Radley is on the main railway line... sorry Railroad!.. from London to Oxford and points North. Radley was also the junction for the branch line which ran the two miles or so into Abingdon and the station mentioned in your quiz, and while train spotting 1 well remember the twice daily train from Abingdon to the Oxford goods yard passing through the station at Radley where it had to stop to join the main line. I think this was where I first really got hooked on MGB's! There were six to ten flat wagon per train, each carrying four MGB's or Midgets on the first stage of their journey, to customers around the World. Up to the end of 1965 this MG train was hauled by a small steam tank locomotive, but later this was replaced by a modern but mundane diesel powered locomotive which was nowhere near such an impres- sive sight as the old steam engine.Sadly with the closure of the MG Abingdon Works in 1980 the branch line soon fell into total disuse. Finally an amendment to the MG trivia onSSV.1-as preserved in theBritish Motor Industry Collection at Syon Parkthe car is now Bronze Yellow rather than Harvest Gold. 24 25 SUSPENDED ANIMATION FOR MCBS Much has beenwritten in theBritish motoringpress recently in regard to modifying the MGB'ssuspension for better handlingand ride.ThosewantingtoimprovetheMGB'schassis behavior have tended to concentrate on three things over previous years. Telescopic damper conversions, or lowering the suspension on rubber bumper cars, anddespite the 'B's not unreasonable roll, at least on chrome bumper models-fittinguprating anti-roll bars. Telescopic damper conversion kits by Koni and Spax have been available for years. At the rear the telescopics simply replace the lever arms, but at the front they are attached to the rear of the suspension assembly;leaving the lever arm unit in place, with its valving removed so it can continue serving as the upper wishbone. Now however, fresh thinking has resulted in more radical approaches from Heritage 1340 Hartford Avenue, Johnston, Rhode Island 02919 (401)831-8850 specialists Moss Europe and Ron Hopkinson both of whom have developed front end 1 I telescopic conversions that include fabricating upper wishbones which do away with the need to retain theleverarmdampers. Corey says that the electric oil pressure gauges fitted to these cars do an acceptable job but that they are not as fast in reacting as one would expect, reducing the indicators Taos Garage to 'idiot' light status! Onesensor detects rapid vehicle movement, and this is supplemented by awebbing sensor. Details of availability and suppliers in the United States is unknown at the present time.

THE TAMARAC V8 One of our members Alan Davis is proprietor together with Colin Bird, of the Tamar Valley MG Center set in one of the most beautiful parts of England, the county of Cornwall. Alan was over here on a visit last year and was most enthusiastic about creating an 'ultimate' MGB and this has now come to pass in the form of the "Tamarac V8 Roadster"which is being built to order in their workshops. From a suitable donor car which is rebodied with a new MGB Heritage shell they install a The Tarnarac MGB V8 with LE wheels. rebuilt 3.5.liter V8 engine plus five speed gearbox.Adjustable telescopic shockabsorbers front and rear, arecomplemented by Moss Europe High-Tech front suspension. I All new interior trim, carpets and a new top are fitted as is a new master cylinder, brake booster and fuel tank. The wiring loom is replaced as are all brake lines and hoses.Stainless steel is utilized for the exhaust and fuel tank, and the interior is complemented by a Mota-Lita steering wheel. A choice of wheels, either the Minilite alloy spoked type, or the Limited Edition alloys can be had, and the MGB is finished in a top class low bake paint to any colour. For a little extra you can have ' a 3.9 tuned engine fitted together with upgraded seats and trim with colour matched padded roll bar. The car is hand built and Alan has adopted as his philosophy the words of Cecil Kimber who wrote thus on individuality: "When I first started producing the MG Car I did it because1 thought other people would share my desire to own something distinctive-acar a little different and a little better in appearance and performance". Well Alan and Colin have certainly achieved that and if you are at all interested contact Tamar MG on 01 144-579-50542 with your check book at the ready. We hope to have a performance review in a future issue of the "MGB Driver".

Dear John, I have a 1974 MGB with chrome bumpers, built in July of 74 it is one of the last C/B cars- Blaze Orange in color and I have 98,000 miles on the clock. However I have a 'stumble' at about 21W2200RPM under acceleration.1 have made all the normal tune-up adjustments including cleaning and lubricating the distributor advance, adjusting the carbs and have fitted a new vacuum advance unit but without curing the problem. Can you please help? John Hynn.VA

Dear ~ohn(an8therJohn!!!-what is it with Johns and MGs?!) Several thing spring to mind about your MGB problem.1~the timing at 15degrees BTDC @ 1500? Is the mixture correct? Is the distributor vacuum advance filled with gasoline? Moreon the mixture-thereis an 0 ring on therotarychoke assembly on the HIFcarb that eventually wears and allows gasoline into theairstream. You may not haverealized this and have adjusted the carbs very lean to make it idle correctly.Once the MGB was on the road the effect of the worn 0 ring might be lessened, yet the carbs would still be lean. A final thought are you using engineoil in the carburetter dashpots? These are just a few thoughts, set up properly the car will run excellently, as does my 1973 MGB GT. #Safety Fast" ou '11 Ilke our RIS and sewice1 John. Recently (May 1991) 1 had the opportunity to travel extensively in the United Kingdom, sometimes driving-sometimes being driven. My travels took me from London through the Midlands and the Fen Country to the Lake District and back to London. Of the thousands of car I encountered on the road I only saw four 11001 1300's in actual use and it would appear that these cars are now rare even in England. However superb examples of these automobiles can be found and are catered for by an extensive and dynamic group of enthusiasts in the form of the "1 100 Club". During my stay I had the pleasure of being hosted by Mr.Derek.R.Bayliss of Coventry who besides being the director of a large foundry also serves as chairman of the 1100 Club, which has expanded to over 600 members with all variants of the 1100/1300being represented among the cars owned by members. The British Motor Corporation manufactured MG1100's from 1962 to 1967 and MG 1300's from 1967 to 1968. In addition similar 1100's & 1300's were manufactured by Morris, Austin, , Wolsley and Riley. Austin also produced an Austin America version and a 1300 GT version. Derek currently owns no less than six 1100/1300's which he has restored doing all the mechanical, paint, and bodywork himself and during my stay Derek kindly S~sllOO/1%00s- oncJ owner afforded a photo opportunity with all six of his vehicles displayed. Shown from left to right in the photograph are a white 1972 Austin 1100, and a Glacier White 1972 , a Trafalgar Blue 1969 MG 1300, a Damask Red 1973 Austin GT, a Flame Red 1969 Austin GT and a Bermuda Blue 1969 Riley 1300. The'69 Austin, incidentally is used by Derek as his daily driver! The 1100 Club is a model of efficiency, with Secretary John Byde leading a dedicated team. John maintains a computerized inventory of 1100/1300 spares, including many hard-to find items which are sold to members at nominal cost. Their own magazine "ldle Chatter" is edited by John Jennings, while the historian of the Club is Chris Morris who has systematically assembled an extensive and thorough collection of sales literature, photographs, road test articles, etc on the 1100/1300's. From this vast collection of material he writes a wide variety of features for "ldle Chatter" a quality publication with essentially the same format, size and length as our own 'MGB Driver'.l did take over a few copies of the 'MGB Driver' and everyone who received a copy was impressed with the quality and content, and of course delighted with the coverage given to the MG 1100/1300 range in our publication! So a most interesting and rewarding trip and for people with any sort of interest in the FWD cars of BMC the 1100 Club is highly reccomended. Membership applications are available by writing to me (address inside front cover!) or I can be faxed at (404) 894-2979. Also if you have any questions on the 1100/1300 range please do not hesitate to contact me, and I will try to help all I can. Forwardly Yours!
