In fact, if you are reading this you are likely one of these parents.

1 What is Private or Independent School?

In the simplest terms, a private school is an which is funded and operated independently from the .

This is why private schools are also known as independent schools. However, while all independent schools are private, not all private schools are independent.

What does that mean?

An independent school has an independent board of trustees who oversee the operation of the school. But private schools, who are not independent, may be part of another organization like a for-profit or nonprofit corporation or a religious institution. While these private schools may not be subject to government regulations and oversight, they may have a separate set of mandates imposed by the affiliated entity.

In Doane Stuart’s case, these are interchangeable terms. We are not affiliated with a or federal organization and have a board of trustees. But from a mission standpoint we also identify as an independent school because it focuses on the administrative sovereignty without the connotations of exclusion that often linger around the notion of “private school”. So while we are technically a private school, for our purposes we’ll use the term “independent school” from here on out.

For example, Doane Stuart is a coeducational, interfaith (yet non-denominational) day school with a strong emphasis on leadership, community service and college preparation.

3 Options 101: Public Vs Private

With all of these choices, and nuanced distinctions, it’s no wonder that parents can feel overwhelmed by the volume of options for educating their children. There are many reasons that parents choose one school over another, or one kind of school over another.

Naturally, there are financial considerations at play when parents look outside of their designated public school system. But the decision for most parents is determined primarily by the priorities of the family. There is no simple answer as to whether or not independent school is better than public school. The better question is whether or not an independent school education is the better choice for your child and your family.

4 CHAPTER TWO The Background and Curriculum of Independent School

5 The Independent School Curriculum

Curriculum may represent one of the largest differences between public schools and Independent schools. While public school curriculums contain a great deal of regulation and oversight from the government, Independent schools have a great deal more flexibility to design their own programs.

Accreditation

While Independent schools may not be beholden to the stringent curriculum rules seen in public schools, there is certainly some standardization through the accreditation process. In New York, Independent school accreditation is provided by the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS), which is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents.

All NYSAIS member schools must go through a rigorous process of examination that involves all members of the school community. The review encompasses all components of school life including governance, finances, teaching and learning, operations and community. A full term of accreditation is five years. According to the NYSAIS, “The process of going through accreditation allows a school to demonstrate and validate its achievement in fulfilling its mission and educational objectives.” It also “provides critical analysis to guide a school for improving its practices and for planning strategic initiatives in its next five years.”

6 Course Offerings

Like public schools, independent schools offer a set students we offer independent studies and uncommon curriculum of core classes that include standards like courses like the History of Mathematical Thought, Digital English, math, science, history, physical education and Composition and Food Ecology. In addition to having more flexibility in designing their course offerings and day-to-day lesson plans, independent schools also have more leeway in setting their process for At Doane Stuart, personalization integrated into student progress evaluation. 10 CHAPTER THREE The Benefits of Independent School

e’ve talked about the independent school As with so many things in life, there are no simple answers Wenvironment and curriculum. But let’s be honest, for these questions. The decision to send your child to as a parent your primary focus is on the big question: independent school is personal and nuanced. This is a choice that is influenced by your child’s unique needs and learning style and, of course, your vision for your child’s future. But there are several considerations that are widely “What are the benefits of independent held by many parents and we will explore those. school and how do I know if it’s the right decision for my child?”

11 Personal Attention

As we’ve touched on throughout our discussion so far, personal attention is one of the many advantages an independent school may offer.

Teachers

While we’ve mentioned that the nationwide student to At an independent school, personalized learning is often teacher ratio in private school is 16:1, and 8:1 at Doane a priority. The smaller class sizes lead to more flexibility Stuart, student to teacher ratios in public school vary of time and attention, which can then be given to greatly by state. The National Education Association puts individual students who may be struggling with a subject the national average at about 15.9 students enrolled per or course. It means lesson plans can be tailored to teacher. Making the national average for public school accommodate multiple styles of learning and teachers about on par with the national average for private school. can get a better sense of how each child learns.

The major difference, of course is going to be determined The attention children recieve isn’t necessarily entirely by the state in which you live, and the area of the tied to helping those who may be falling behind in a state. In New York, for example, classroom sizes in the subject. It also applies to children who excel. Teachers with northernmost upstate areas are much different than those fewer students have more opportunity to provide positive in New York City. But of course the reason this number is reinforcement for good work and challenge students who studied and monitored so closely is directly tied to how need more complex material. This, of course, lends itself it impacts a teacher’s ability to offer personal attention directly to other benefits offered by independent schools. to his or her students and build an interpersonal relationship with each child.

12 13 Counselors

In addition to the student to teacher relationship, school counselors can play an important role in a child’s development. The counselor-student relationship can impact aspects of growth that may fall outside of standard course work including, socialization, mental health and college preparation. At Doane Stuart, each child begins meeting with a college counselor early on to discuss their dreams and future aspirations so that, as early as freshman year, the school can help the student embark on a pathway to achieving their goals. The frequency of these meetings increases each year as the student gets closer to graduation. The level of involvement and personalization exceeds the typical level of involvement and includes proofreading every student’s essay, reviewing their college visit agenda and becoming close to each student. The senior class at Doane Stuart averages around 35 students and over 100 colleges come to visit the campus to talk to our students every year.

13 questions, to understand the “why” and “how” associated Intellectual Challenges with each lesson and then to ask the question “what if.” and a Love of Learning The notion of lifelong learning may be best encapsulated by the statement attributed to Robert F. Kennedy. Students of independent schools are often encouraged “There are those that look at things the way they are, and to take ownership in their own education. It is one of the ask why? I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?” foremost goals of most private institutions to cultivate a love of learning in the children they teach. At Doane Stuart, Students with a true love of learning, epitomize that we emphasize building a foundation for long-term academic expression. 14 15 Values, Culture and Character

For many parents, the decision to seek out an independent school is driven by the desire to find a which focuses on character development within a framework of cultural and moral values that reflect the parents’ own belief system. This particular facet of independent school is one of the most differentiating factors between institutions.

Every independent school has their own distinct mission and organizational culture which serves as the foundation for everything they do. Curricula, staffing, enrollment, extracurriculars and day-to-day routines are all shaped by the school’s overarching principles and core values. For example, at Doane Stuart our mission statement includes study, social responsibility and strong faith. These components of our mission have helped to shape important elements of the student life like:

A co-educational environment - college, and life after college, requires us to interact with individuals across genders and backgrounds. We believe that the educational environment is vital to helping children to interact with and respect members of both genders in a meaningful way.

15 A Foundation of Faith Volunteerism and Community Involvement Faith is unique to each individual and we focus on the nature of faith more so than the denomination or sect. We are committed to teaching our students social We emphasize that faith is a personal decision tied to responsibility and that, as human beings, we are charged family and tradition. Over forty years later, it is clear that this experiment was indeed a success.

16 17 Diversity

In addition to faith-related diversity, Doane Stuart embraces diversity in all forms, including race, socio-economic backgrounds and age. With all grade levels located in one building, through all- school meetings and chapel experiences, the entire student body is brought together on numerous occasions. The partnerships between early school children and their 4th grade reading buddies also exemplifies age-level interaction diversity. With these partnerships, and our numerous cross- division activities, our independent school is as diverse or more so than many public counterparts.

Independent schools may also offer areas of specialty which are important to you as a parent or to your child’s own demonstrated talents and passions. Institutional specializations are broad and can range from performance to language immersion to equestrianism to robotics.

Doane Stuart cultivates a variety of artistic and academic programs in order for students to discover and cultivate their talents and interests. We offer specialties in visual and performing arts as well as independent studies in all areas of the curriculum to help students channel their interests and aptitudes into career oriented pathways.

19 College Preparation

Moreover, three-quarters of private high schools employ a counselor who is solely dedicated to matters of college admissions, something very few public schools are able to offer.”

This process includes visits from representatives of more than 100 colleges, and supervised college campus visits. On campus college oriented programs involve application essay workshops, one-on-one assistance and counseling meetings along with intensive SAT preparation. Additionally, we provide personalized counseling to help students identify and and tailor their resumes toward their preferred colleges. In 2018 alone, the 35 members of Doane Stuart’s graduating class earned a collective $4 million dollars in merit aid.

While each school’s approach to college preparation, and the application process will vary, most independent schools do place an emphasis on post-high school education that begins during the formative years.

Ultimately, the benefits of independent school are as unique for each family as the children themselves. For some, it’s building a foundation for lifelong learning. For others, it’s about cultural values and a college-bound mindset. Whatever you hope your child can get from an independent school education, it is generally achievable when they attend a school that best aligns with your own values and aspirations.

28 29 Here are a few tips for the application process

Be Honest

Schools know that no child is perfect, so fudging details or past incidents is not advised. Certainly, there are some behavioral red flags, but a student who presents as too perfect can also raise eyebrows. Overall, a school is most interested in getting to know the authentic child. This is critical to understanding what motivates and captivates the potential student. Without a genuine understanding of their triggers, both positive and negative it is impossible to know if it is a good cultural fit.

Be Thorough

Make sure you allow yourself enough time to complete the entire application and provide as many details as possible. It may seem like a lot of questions, but each section is a result of years of successful enrollment and matriculation.

29 Be Prepared

It absolutely helps to have all of the supporting materials necessary for application ready when submitting. While allowances can be made to supply recommendations or transcripts at a later date, this may prolong the process. Most schools, including Doane Stuart, require that recommendations are received directly from the student’s current school to ensure privacy and honesty. It is a good idea to inform the student’s current school that these will be requested so that they are given sufficient time to complete recommendation forms and gather records as to not delay the application process.

This also applies to interviews and exams. There’s no point in stressing a child out over these parts of an application, but rather the opposite. A prospective student should be well-rested, fed and relatively free from distraction prior to doing the interview or taking the exam. This will place them in the best possible mindset to just “be themselves” which is ultimately, what the school wants to see.

No two independent schools have the exact same application process. Each institution has shades of nuance that are particular to their own environment and mission. But these pillars of process, and the tactics to excel at them, are common throughout the independent school system.
