Athletics Australia announced yesterday (see http://athletics.com.au/News/apprentice-coach) that he would be one of two new coaches in their national structure. The announcement reads as follows Athletics Australia High Performance Director, Simon Nathan, has today confirmed the appointment of Mike Barber and Daniel Coleman to the position of Apprentice Coach. Both Barber and Coleman will commence in their part-time roles as soon as possible. “Both Mike and Daniel were ideal candidates for the position of Apprentice Coach with Athletics Australia. They have a sound depth of coaching knowledge already and by working closely with Craig Hilliard they will continue to develop into the future,” Nathan said. “Mike is the current coach of Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Kelsey-Lee Roberts, and his role will see him play an integral role in the day-to-day coaching and management of field event athletes. -

Being an Olympic week, our Walker of the Week award this week can only go to Jared Tallent for his great 7th place walk with 1:20:02. For Jared, it is another fantastic top-eight finish and it is in the lesser of his two Olympic events. With the 50km event next week, he may well do significantly better in his next walk. 20KM MEN'S RACEWALK, OLYMPIC GAMES, THE MALL, LONDON, SATURDAY 4 AUGUST 2012 I was trackside on Saturday to watch the first of the Olympic walks in London. I was a little apprehensive as I did not have any event tickets and was not sure how the free spectator area would turn out but there were no issues and I was able to position myself roadside in a great spot. The only negative was the lack of any big TV screens in the free viewing area but the on-course commentary was spot on and quite audible from the closest loudspeakers. -

DeMeester Dear Seb, I am writing you because of three press releases issued by the International Olympic Committee last week. First of all, congratulations on your nomination to join the IOC as a member whose candidature is linked to a function within an international federation. Whatever structural flaws the IOC may have (you were elected President by our member federations; the IOC is a handpicked closed group), athletics deserves an ex officio seat at the table. Second, in light of the Black Lives Matter movement, the IOC condemned racism in the strongest terms, citing the non-discrimination rights and freedoms set forth in Fundamental Principle 6 of the Olympic Charter. This Olympic constitutional provision prohibits discrimination of any kind, including race and sex, among others. This principle formed the basis for the legal challenges against the exclusion of women athletes from the 50K Race Walk Event. World Athletics, under your leadership, deserves credit for having included the Women’s 50K Race Walk Event at top IAAF level starting with London 2017, and for having urged the IOC to include women 50K walkers in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. -

The History of Sport in Latin America HIST 355-02 (Spring 2014) / Room: Public Policy 208
The History of Sport in Latin America HIST 355-02 (Spring 2014) / Room: Public Policy 208 Rwany Sibaja Office Hours Dept. of History – Admin 714 M/W 11:15- 12:15 [email protected] or by appt. (please email 410.455.2093 ahead of time) In this course, together, we will explore the role of sports in the construction of identities in Latin America. Upper and middle class citizens first embraced organized athletics by the late-nineteenth century. They viewed sporting activities as civilizing tools. Soon, activities like fútbol (soccer) and béisbol (baseball) became popular with the masses. Thus, we will discover how sports shaped gender, class, and national identities from Mexico to the Southern Cone. We will also analyze the imperial origins of sports across Latin America, the connection between politics and sportsmen, and how athletics shaped other forms of mass culture. The course will conclude with a global focus, seeking to understand Latin America’s role in the international sports community. Primary objective To trace how multiple forms of identity developed and changed over time across Latin America through the study of sports Specific objectives for this course 1. To be able to… show how gender, class, race, ethnicity, and other forms of identity – both within particular countries and across Latin America – intersected via sports through a careful analysis of primary and secondary sources a. To be able to… think as historians in the analysis of primary and secondary sources, charting changes over time, and placing the development of organized sports within the larger historical context 2. To be able to… identify ways in which sports affected other forms of mass culture (cinema, music), politics, and social movements (likewise, to show how external events affected sports culture) 3. -
