Tiivistelmä – Abstract This research figures out, how the concept of independent games and independent game production is understood in the field of game industry. Some comparisons are made to music and movie industry, using literature and different internet sources to find out commonly used definitions for independent concept on different areas of entertainment business. Three level definition for independent productions is formed, mainly from the commerce point of view - independent, semi-independent and non-independent games and producers. Second part of this research is a quantitative genre comparison between non-independent games and independent games. For the use of the genre research, a study of game genres is made and basen on that, a game genre systemi is produced. Main finding of the quantitative research is, that independent game genre distribution is different in the case of non-independent games, but there are a lot of similarities within both non-independent and independent games genre division. • Casual Resistance: a Longitudinal Case Study of Video Gaming's Gendered
Running Head: CASUAL RESISTANCE Casual resistance: A longitudinal case study of video gaming’s gendered construction and related audience perceptions Amanda C. Cote This is an Accepted Manuscript of an article published by Oxford Academic in Journal of Communication on August 4, 2020, available online: https://doi.org/10.1093/joc/jqaa028 . Abstract: Many media are associated with masculinity or femininity and male or female audiences, which links them to broader power structures around gender. Media scholars thus must understand how gendered constructions develop and change, and what they mean for audiences. This article addresses these questions through longitudinal, in-depth interviews with female video gamers (2012-2018), conducted as the rise of casual video games potentially started redefining gaming’s historical masculinization. Analysis shows that participants have negotiated relationships with casualness. While many celebrate casual games’ potential for welcoming new audiences, others resist casual’s influence to safeguard their self-identification as gamers. These results highlight how a medium’s gendered construction may not be salient to consumers, who carefully navigate divides between their own and industrially-designed identities, but can simultaneously reaffirm existing power structures. Further, how participants’ views change over time emphasizes communication’s ongoing need for longitudinal audience studies that address questions of media, identity, and inclusion. Keywords: Video games, gender, game studies, feminist media studies, hegemony, casual games, in-depth interviews, longitudinal audience studies CASUAL RESISTANCE 2 Casual resistance: A longitudinal case study of video gaming’s gendered construction and related audience perceptions From comic books to soap operas, many media are gendered, associated with masculinity or femininity and with male or female audiences.

  • Permadeath in Dayz
Fear, Loss and Meaningful Play: Permadeath in DayZ Marcus Carter, Digital Cultures Research Group, The University of Sydney; Fraser Allison, Microsoft Research Centre for Social NUI, The University of Melbourne Abstract This article interrogates player experiences with permadeath in the massively multiplayer online first-person shooter DayZ. Through analysing the differences between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ instances of permadeath, we argue that meaningfulness – in accordance with Salen & Zimmerman’s (2003) concept of meaningful play – is a critical requirement for positive experiences with permadeath. In doing so, this article suggests new ontologies for meaningfulness in play, and demonstrates how meaningfulness can be a useful lens through which to understand player experiences with negatively valanced play. We conclude by relating the appeal of permadeath to the excitation transfer effect (Zillmann 1971), drawing parallels between the appeal of DayZ and fear-inducing horror games such as Silent Hill and gratuitously violent and gory games such as Mortal Kombat. Keywords DayZ, virtual worlds, meaningful play, player experience, excitation transfer, risk play Introduction It's truly frightening, like not game-frightening, but oh my god I'm gonna die-frightening. Your hands starts shaking, your hands gets sweaty, your heart pounds, your mind is racing and you're a wreck when it's all over. There are very few games that – by default – feature permadeath as significantly and totally as DayZ (Bohemia Interactive 2013). A new character in this massively multiplayer online first- person shooter (MMOFPS) begins with almost nothing, and must constantly scavenge from the harsh zombie-infested virtual world to survive. A persistent emotional tension accompanies the requirement to constantly find food and water, and a player will celebrate the discovery of simple items like backpacks, guns and medical supplies.
