WELCOME TO BRADFORD LITERATURE FESTIVAL’S 10 Books that Changed My Life with JACQUELINE WILSON Age: This is most suitable for UKS2 (aged 9-11) and KS3 (11-14). UKS2 & KS3 ACTIVITY SUGGESTIONS English English Curriculum Organise their ideas effectively for writing. Identify the audience for and purpose of the writing Recommend books that they have read to their peers, giving reasons for their choices. A. PRE-EVENT SUGGESTIONS 1. Our Favourite Books by Jacqueline Wilson Gather children together and ask them if they have read any books by Jacqueline Wilson. o Which books did they like the best? o What sort of books were they? . Were they funny books? . Books to do with friendship? . Books to do with family? . Books to do with relationships? . Books set in the past? . Retelling an old story in a new way? o What was the genre of the book/s? Were they: . Fantasy? . Horror? . Romance? . Science Fiction? . Crime and Mystery? . Adventure? . Historical? . Animal? . Sports? Ask children to recommend one book of Jacqueline Wilson’s to the class. o Record their answers on the whiteboard. Ask children to read one of these recommended books. For children familiar with Jacqueline Wilson as them to read a book they have not yet read. 2. Reviewing Books by Jacqueline Wilson Gather children together and introduce the idea of a Book Review. Discuss with the class the different elements including: o The title and author o The Beginning part which includes an overview of the story: . Characters . Setting . Plot or Problem to be solved o The Middle Part includes: . Three main events that help the story move along. o Ending . Resolution/how the problem was solved? . What happened at the end? o Opinions . What did they like about the book? . What did they not like about the book? . Would they recommend it, and to whom? Ask children to write a book review of one of Jacqueline Wilson’s book. B. What are the similarities? They both: Tell the story of someone’s life Are written in the past tense Follow chronological order (the order in which things actually happened) Are non-fiction . What are the differences? Biographies are: o Written by a person about their own life. o Written in first person (I) Autobiographies are: o Written by a person about someone else’s life. o Written in third person (he/she/they) Introduce the idea of writing a biography of Jacqueline Wilson. Discuss with the class: o Creating a fact file on Jacqueline Wilson o What headings they should include in the biography? . When and where Jacqueline was born, . Her family, parents, siblings etc. Her childhood, . The major events in her life – getting married, divorced etc. How these events affected her . What are her top ten books? . How does she write her books? . Where does she get her inspiration from? . Any other important information about Jacqueline Wilson. Illustrating the Biography Jacqueline Wilson first started working with illustrator Nick Sharratt on the Tracy Beaker Books.
