2 3 Resolution establishing the Rainbow Honor Walk on Castro Street between 19th Street 4 and Market Street, on Market street between Castro Street and Nee Octavia Street, on 5 19th Street between Diamond Street and Castro Street, on 18th Street between 6 Collingwood Street and Hartford Street and initiating the process set forth in Public

7 Works Code Sections 789 et seq. to provide for the creation of a program for and 8 installation of commemorative plaques on the Rainbow Honor Walk.

9 10 WHEREAS, The Castro is an iconic American neighborhood that is rich in history and

11 culture; and,

12 WHEREAS, Prior to the civil rights and pride movements of the 1960s and 1970s, gay 13 people were regularly blacklisted, arrested, and harassed by police, and the Castro

14 neighborhood became one of the birthplaces of the continuing fight for equal rights; and, 15 WHEREAS, The nation's first openly gay person to be elected to office, ,

16 was a representative of the Castro; and, 17 WHEREAS, The neighborhood was hard hit by the early years of the AIDS epidemic

18 and local gay activists were instrumental in establishing standards for care and prevention

19 through organizing and fundraising; and, 20 WHEREAS, The Castro neighborhood has been the birthplace and nurturing place for

21 pride, political, and social change across the United States; and, 22 WHEREAS, The City and County of San Francisco celebrates the great contributions

23 of LGBT women and men to the arts, entertainment, politics, sports, and science, and

2 seq., the San Francisco Board of Supervisors hereby establishes the Rainbow Honor Walk 3 Castro Street between 19th Street and Market Street, on Market street between Castro Street

4 and Nee-Octavia Street, on 19th Street between Diamond Street and Castro Street, on 18th 5 Street between Collingwood Street and Hartford Street and initiates the process for the

6 historical and, cultural reasons set forth herein; and be it 7 FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors urges the Department of Public

8 Works to include the Rainbow Honor Walk on its official street map of the City and County of 9 San Francisco; and, be it

10 FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors declares its intent to initiate the 11 process in accordance with Public Works Code Sections 789 et seq., the Commemorative

12 Street Plaque Ordinance, for installation of commemorative plaques on the Rainbow Honor 13 Walk on said streets; and, be it

14 FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of Supenlisors urges the Department of Public 15 Works to work with the District 8 Supervisor, local neighborhood organizations, and other

16 interested organizations, to develop a plaque program for the Rainbow Honor Walk, 17 expeditiously process such program once developed, and return to the Board for final action

18 on the commemorative street plaques.
