MIFTAH- Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy Protection of Women from Violence in Times of Armed Conflict: Palestinian Women as a Case Study Prepared By: Tamara Tamimi April 2020 1 Protection of Women from Violence in Times of Armed Conflict: Palestinian Women as a Case Study Abstract in English Violence against women in Palestine at the hands of Israeli occupation forces and settlers is part and parcel of the wider framework of violence against the Palestinian people. Violence by occupation forces takes many different forms, some are evident and clear such as targeted killing and injury, as well as imprisonment. Other forms of violence are less pronounced but equally important as they pertain to the forcible displacement of Palestinians; these include house demolitions, house evictions, revocation of residency, land and property confiscation and imposition of restrictions on the registration of newborns. While this violence is targeted against the entirety of the Palestinian people, including women, children and the elderly, it has a disproportionate impact on women due to reinforcement of patriarchy, traditional gender roles and stereotypes, as well as the reproduction of the cycle of violence by the stronger social group against the weaker social group, and signifying diminishing acceptance and tolerance to diversity and difference. Violence against the Palestinian people as a whole has persisted for over fifty years despite the multitude of instruments and mechanisms to protect from violence in times of armed conflict. This includes instruments within the framework of international humanitarian law, international human rights law and international criminal law, as well as the women, peace and security agenda. -

Knesset Yisrael: Beyond the Zebra Effect Rabbi Reuven Brand Rosh Kollel, Yeshiva University Torah Mitzion Kollel of Chicago One Statement, Three Questions לא הביט און ביעקב ולא He has not seen iniquity in Jacob, nor has he seen impropriety in Israel; the ראה עמל בישראל ה' .Lord his God is with him, and the trumpet blast of a king is among them אלהיו עמו ותרועת מלך בו: Bamidbar 23:21 במדבר כג:כא This statement is one of the phrases that Hashem placed in the mouth of Bilaam, the gentile prophet, as he attempted to curse the emerging Jewish nation in the desert. His proclamation became a divinely inspired blessing, as this highly laudatory comment implies. Rashbam (R. Shmuel ben Meir, c. 1080-1160, France) explains the intent of the verse to mean that although sometimes the Jews do commit iniquity or impropriety, Hashem does not want to punish them. Ibn Ezra (R. Abraham Ibn Ezra, 1089-1164, Spain) suggests that Bilaam observed the success of the Jewish people and attributed it to their spiritual prowess, but were they to sin then Hashem would punish them. Rashi (R. Shlomo ben Yitzchak, 1040- 1105, France) cites a more radical interpretation. He explains that Hashem does not care to witness flaws or shortcomings among his people. This, however, is difficult to comprehend in light of a statement in the Talmud: אמר ר׳ חנינא: כל האומר הקב״ה ותרן R. Hanina said: If a man says that the Holy One, blessed be הוא ־ יותרו חייו, שנאמר: (דברים ל״ב) He, is forgoing, his life shall be outlawed, for it is stated, He is הצור תמים פעלו כי כל דרכיו משפט . -

Gevaryahu Printed in Jerusalem Alon Printing 02-5388938 Editor’s Introduction Every Shabbat morning, upon entering Lower Merion Synagogue, an Orthodox congregation on the outskirts of the city of Philadelphia, I began by exchanging greetings with the late Lt. Colonel Eliyahu Yekutiel Shwartz. He used to give me news clippings and booklets which, in his opinion, would enhance my knowledge. I, in turn, would express my personal views on current events, especially related to our shared birthplace, Jerusalem. Throughout the years we had an unwritten agreement; Eliyahu would have someone at the Israeli Consulate of Philadelphia fax the latest news in Hebrew to my office (Eliyahu had no fax machine at the time), and I would deliver the weekly accumulation of faxes to his house on Friday afternoons before Shabbat. This arrangement lasted for years. Eliyahu read the news, and distributed the material he thought was important to other Israelis and especially to our mutual friend Dr. Michael Toaff. We all had an inherent need to know exactly what was happening in Israel. Often, during my frequent visits to Israel, I found that I was more current on happenings in Israel than the local Israelis. -
Legal Pluralism, Religious Adjudication and the State
A PLURALITY OF DISCONTENT: LEGAL PLURALISM, RELIGIOUS ADJUDICATION AND THE STATE Adam S. Hofri-Winogradow* INTRODUCTION The norms that the official legal systems of North American and European states apply do not derive directly from any religion. While some of those norms, such as some of the norms governing marriage, do originate, historically, in religion and religious law, no norms are today enforced by those legal systems because the norms are part of a specific religious legal order. And yet, adjudication according to religious norms is commonplace. In North America and Europe, the legal systems applying norms associated with specific religions to adherents of those religions are principally nonstate community tribunals. Outside this Northwestern world, state legal systems, particularly those of Muslim- majority jurisdictions, often permit religious normative materials to be applied to adherents of the relevant religions as a matter of state law. Both situations are examples of legal pluralism.' On Jerusalem as a Feminine and Sexual Hypostasis: From Late Antiquity Sources to Medieval Kabbalah* Moshe IDEL 1. Introduction Modern scholarship of Jewish mysticism has addressed the status of the feminine within the divine realm in different ways. Unlike the more standard views of some Jewish theologians, like Maimonides, who envisioned Jewish thought as subscribing to a stark abstract monotheistic vision, scholars started recently to elaborate on a variety of diverging visions of the deity, some of which include feminine elements that played an important role in medieval Jewish sources known as Kabbalah. The origins of these elements are a mat- ter of dispute. Some scholars trace them to biblical times, as there are de- scriptions of the divinity or divinities in feminine terms in ancient Judaism.1 Gershom Scholem, however, opted for the importance of Gnostic sources as a major clue for understanding the background of early Kabbalistic discussions, and focused his explanation in a shift of the understanding of a Rabbinic 1 * This study is part of a more comprehensive book dealing with the emergence of the Kab- balistic views of femininity in preparation.
