When studying the fantastic, even the most attentive studies have been biased by predetermined expectations. While theoreticians such as Tzvetan Todorov apply a universal definition of the genre to all western literary traditions, disregarding the variety among national settings and eliding the complexity of historical contexts, prominent critics such as David Roas or Baquero Goyanes have approached the Spanish fantastic as a mere reflection of foreign models. This perspective limits the Peninsular fantastic to a position of invisibility or dependence. Contrarily, I propose to return to the complexity and diversity of historical interpretations and to contextualize the existence of alternative practices of the genre, !ii which is characterized by the filtering of hegemonic interpretations through their notion of national identity and literary tradition. -
Retrospective Posthumanism: Frankenstein According to Our Vocabulary
Retrospective Posthumanism: Frankenstein According to Our Vocabulary Sara Martín © Sara Martín, 2021 Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona Abstract: Mary Shelley conceived Frankenstein as a Gothic horror story. However, Brian Aldiss claimed in 1973 that her novel is the true originator of science fiction—a 1920s label of which she could not be aware. Also in the 1970s, ‘posthumanism’ emerged as the critical current that might replace humanism. The word ‘posthuman’, though, had first appeared in a 1936 novella by H.P. Lovecraft. Because of this changing vocabulary Frankenstein must be re-read retrospectively (though not unproblematically) without neglecting its Gothic origins, as pioneering fiction about the creation of a posthuman individual, even of a whole posthuman species. In this article I argue that, nonetheless, the new posthuman re-reading should not obscure Mary Shelley’s intention to characterize her monster as an abject creature intended to produce intense fear and terror in her readers. This is an affect that has been lost in the contemporary academic treatment of the creature as a being dispossessed of his rights as a living individual. Keywords: Mary Shelley, Frankenstein, Gothic, science fiction, posthumanism 1. - Berlin [u.a.] : De Gruyter, 2013. - 467, [8] S. : Ill. ; 23 cm. - (Hermaea ; N.F. 126). - Zugl. leicht übe- rarb. Liberal Affect and Literary Culture: the Politics of Feeling in Mid-Nineteenth Century German Fiction
LIBERAL AFFECT AND LITERARY CULTURE: THE POLITICS OF FEELING IN MID-NINETEENTH CENTURY GERMAN FICTION Erik J. Grell A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Ph.D. in the Carolina-Duke Graduate Program in German Studies Chapel Hill 2015 Approved by: Jonathan M. Hess Eric Downing Konrad H. Jarausch Thomas Pfau Gabriel Trop © 2015 Erik J. Grell ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Erik J. Grell: Liberal Affect and Literary Culture: The Politics of Feeling in Mid-Nineteenth Century German Fiction (Under the direction of Jonathan M. Hess) Liberal Affect and Literary Culture: The Politics of Feeling in Mid-Nineteenth Century German Fiction, develops a new model for understanding the role of literature in the formative years of German liberalism. Traditional narratives about the emergence of liberal ideology in nineteenth-century Germany frequently stress political failure by way of arguing for a Sonderweg approach to German modernity. In partial dissent from these accounts, I explore how German liberalism is significant for what it does achieve, and not only as a result of its failures. Against the grain of teleological accounts of German political development and their narrative of political and institutional miscarriage (e.g., Mommsen, Fischer, Wehler), my research engages the diverse and far-flung culture of popular prose fiction between 1830 and 1860 as a site where German liberalism succeeded during its formative years. In so doing, I am mindful not to conflate liberal success entirely with bourgeois success, an impulse that tacitly informs the basis of Geoff Eley and David Blackbourn’s seminal work. -
