Spurred by its role as one of the seven originating theaters of D.C.'s Women's Voices Theater Festival, Arena Stage has embraced a commitment to inclusion with a season featuring seven titles by women, six playwrights of color and five female directors. On assembling the lineup Smith shares, "Arena has such a smart and diverse audience, so it is always a challenge to ensure everyone is energized. This season we leaned into that challenge and are welcoming a host of extremely talented artists both returning and new. This season is a celebration of Arena's broad shoulders, from our Lillian Hellman Festival, a Lorraine Hansberry classic and the gold-standard musical to world-premiere political dramas, a comedy and a new musical. The Mead Center was designed to have these different audiences unite in our flowing lobby, and I'm eager to experience this throughout our dynamic season." The season kicks off in July with the original world-premiere musical Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story by six- time Grammy Award winner BeBe Winans and veteran Arena Stage playwright/director Charles Randolph-Wright. Featuring new music by BeBe, the musical chronicles the early days of his career with sister CeCe and will star their niece and nephew, siblings Deborah Joy Winans and Juan Winans. -

History oF arena Stage: Where American Theater Lives The Mead Center for American Theater Arena Stage was founded August 16, 1950 in Washington, D.C. by Zelda Fichandler, Tom Fichandler and Edward Mangum. Over 65 years later, Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director Molly Smith and Executive Director Edgar Dobie, is a national center dedicated to American voices and artists. Arena Stage produces plays of all that is passionate, profound, deep and dangerous in the American spirit, and presents diverse and ground- breaking work from some of the best artists around the country. Arena Stage is committed to commissioning and developing new plays and impacts the lives of over 10,000 students annually through its work in community engagement. Now in its seventh decade, Arena Stage serves a diverse annual audience of more than 300,000. When Zelda and Tom Fichandler and a handful of friends started Arena Stage, there was no regional theater movement in the United States or resources to support a theater committed to providing quality work for its community. It took time for the idea of regional theater to take root, but the Fichandlers, together with the people of the nation’s capital, worked patiently to build the fledgling theater into a diverse, multifaceted, internationally renowned institution. Likewise, there were no professional theaters operating in Washington, D.C. in 1950. Actors’ Equity rules did not permit its members to perform in segregated houses, and neither The National nor Ford’s Theatre was integrated. From its inception, Arena opened its doors to anyone who wished to buy a ticket, becoming the first integrated theater in this city. -

Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater’s latest world premiere docudrama, The 51st State, will receive its world premiere through Arena Stage’s Supper Club on September 16 at 7 p.m. Following the premiere, viewers can join artists and creatives for a post-film discussion and after-party on Zoom. The film will be available online to the general public on Thursday, September 17. Patrons will be able to view the film on both the Arena Stage and WTOP.com websites by searching for Arena Stage. The hyper local 60-minute film created by Washington, D.C. artists through the voices of 11 residents was inspired by protests and the reignition of a movement after the murder of George Floyd and the quest for creating the 51st state and sovereignty in Washington, D.C. ARMBRUSTER SCENIC STUDIO (est. 1875-closed 1958) Mathias Armbruster (1839-1920) studied art in his native Germany and Paris before coming to the United States. In Cincinnati he worked as an art-glass painter and theatrical designer, later settling in Columbus and establishing the Armbruster Scenic Studio. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries he designed for many touring theatre companies including the Al G. Field, Modjeska, Robert Mantell, and Hanford-Tyler-MacLean companies. Armbruster became one of the largest scenic studios in America. Upon Mathias's death, his sons Emil, Otto and Albert took over the studio, designing for minstrel shows, vaudeville, and other entertainments, operating until Albert’s retirement. JOHN ARNONE (1949-) resides in New York City. Educated at Southern Methodist University, University of Michigan (M.F.A.). Arnone began as an actor, changing to set design in 1976. He has designed extensively for Broadway (recently including The Full Monty), Off- Broadway (numerous designs for the Joseph Papp Public Theater productions such as Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, costume design by Toni-Leslie James), regional theatres (La Jolla Playhouse, Arena Stage, the Guthrie Theatre, Hartford Stage, American Conservatory Theater, the Huntington Theatre) and internationally (London, Vienna, Frankfurt, Berlin, Prague). He received the OBIE Award for Sustained Excellence, and numerous nominations and awards including the Tony for The Who’s Tommy. BORIS ARONSON (ca. 1900 – 1980) Educated in Russia, with major designer Alexandra Exter. In the United States, Aronson began his design career with the Yiddish Art Theater. While the majority of his work was as a set designer, Aronson also designed costumes and lighting. -
