Tim Harte Bryn Mawr College Dec. 2012 Athletic Inspiration: Vladimir Nabokov and the Aesthetic Thrill of Sports “People have played for as long as they have existed,” Vladimir Nabokov remarked in 1925. “During certain eras—holidays for humanity—people have taken a particular fancy to games. As it was in ancient Greece and ancient Rome, so it is in our present-day Europe” (“Braitenshtreter – Paolino,” 749). 1 For Nabokov, foremost among these popular games were sports competitions. An ardent athlete and avid sports fan, Nabokov delighted in the competitive spirit of athletics and creatively explored their aesthetic as well as philosophical ramifications through his poetry and prose. As an essential, yet underappreciated component of the Russian-American writer’s art, sports appeared first in early verse by Nabokov before subsequently providing a recurring theme in his fiction. The literary and the athletic, although seemingly incongruous modes of human activity, frequently intersected for Nabokov, who celebrated the thrills, vigor, and beauty of sports in his present-day “holiday for humanity” with a joyous energy befitting such physical activity. -
Press Release-Becky
588 Sutter Street #318 San Francisco, CA 94102 415.677.9596 fax 415.677.9597 www.sfplayhouse.org PRESS RELEASE VENUE: 533 Sutter Street, @ Powell For immediate release Contact: Susi Damilano December, 2011 [email protected] Regional Premiere of BECKY SHAW By Gina Gionfreddo Directed by Amy Glazer January 24 th to March 10th PRESS OPENING: January 28th San Francisco, CA (December, 2011) – Gina Gionfreddo’s 2009 Pulitzer finalist, Becky Shaw will receive its regional premiere at the SF Playhouse (Bill English, Artistic Director; Susi Damilano, Producing Director) opening January 28 th (after previews that begin January 24 th ) through March 10 th . Artistic Director, Bill English says he was drawn to Becky Shaw “because it seemed like a wonderful 21st century twist on the drawing room comedy genre. If Oscar Wilde, Noel Coward, or Frank Capra were writing today, aware of our much more complex and knotted relationships, they might have fashioned something like "Becky." The character Becky Shaw, like a time bomb with a slow fuse, is the nitro, thrown into the glycerin of a deeply co- dependent family. And the witty dialogue with zingers abounding is worthy of comparison to a Philadelphia Story or Private Lives .” Like the Victorian upstart Becky Sharp, this modern Becky is unsure, overdressed and socially ambitious. But watch out. She’s no shrinking violet, as the silkily cynical Max soon learns. From their first blind date, which includes an unscheduled visit to the police station, these 30-somethings, along with the newlyweds who set them up, surprise us—and themselves—in a comedy thriller The New York Times called “as engrossing as it is ferociously funny, like a big box of fireworks fizzing and crackling across the stage!” This play asks what we owe the people we love the most and the strangers who land on our doorstep. -

Spurred by its role as one of the seven originating theaters of D.C.'s Women's Voices Theater Festival, Arena Stage has embraced a commitment to inclusion with a season featuring seven titles by women, six playwrights of color and five female directors. On assembling the lineup Smith shares, "Arena has such a smart and diverse audience, so it is always a challenge to ensure everyone is energized. This season we leaned into that challenge and are welcoming a host of extremely talented artists both returning and new. This season is a celebration of Arena's broad shoulders, from our Lillian Hellman Festival, a Lorraine Hansberry classic and the gold-standard musical to world-premiere political dramas, a comedy and a new musical. The Mead Center was designed to have these different audiences unite in our flowing lobby, and I'm eager to experience this throughout our dynamic season." The season kicks off in July with the original world-premiere musical Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story by six- time Grammy Award winner BeBe Winans and veteran Arena Stage playwright/director Charles Randolph-Wright. Featuring new music by BeBe, the musical chronicles the early days of his career with sister CeCe and will star their niece and nephew, siblings Deborah Joy Winans and Juan Winans. -

A Delicate Balance
PEEK BEHIND THE SCENES OF A DELICATE BALANCE Compiled By Lotta Löfgren To Our Patrons Most of us who attend a theatrical performance know little about how a play is actually born to the stage. We only sit in our seats and admire the magic of theater. But the birthing process involves a long period of gestation. Certainly magic does happen on the stage, minute to minute, and night after night. But the magic that theatergoers experience when they see a play is made possible only because of many weeks of work and the remarkable dedication of many, many volunteers in order to transform the text into performance, to move from page to stage. In this study guide, we want to give you some idea of what goes into creating a show. You will see the actors work their magic in the performance tonight. But they could not do their job without the work of others. Inside you will find comments from the director, the assistant director, the producer, the stage manager, the set -
